1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] FoxCoin - A Fully dynamic Cyptocurrency [RELEASED! SMOOTH LAUNCH!] on: January 21, 2014, 12:02:57 AM
Okay, first experience.  Started with shard, got a bit accepted but it crashed hard so switched to united.

Was working okay, had a bunch of accepted, dashboard showed a bunch of valid shares.  Then these were reset to zero and started again. Had some lost connections, but seems to be working okay.  But my stats are gone and nothing has showed up in my wallet.  Maybe this is normal, but I was expecting a few thousands coins by now.

Oh well, give it a bit longer, then back to LTC and Quark.

Okay, going to give this a try as my first participation in a coin launch.

I will be using the fox.hackshard.com pool, and trying to mine using a combination of cgminer, minerd and cudaminer on Mac and Linux.  I will have to probably use my windows VM to setup a wallet until other options are available.

I hope everything goes well, and I'm interested to see how the whole thing plays out.

Just a question (since I have a mac) have you tried using a mining program inside the VM? since openCL on osx is kinda of paltry?

I don't know, I find openCL works fine for AMD/ATI cards, and competitively with PC benchmarks I've seen, but it's horrible for Nvidia cards.  That's why I'm using cudaminer on my iMac with an Nvidia card.  It's almost three times faster than with OpenCL, but probably still way too slow.

I wouldn't bother mining in a VM, maybe it might work a bit, but would probably make my system less responsive, and it also adds network latency.  As a comparison, I am now mining LTC and Quark on my i7 iMac, using all 8 virtual cores, and maxing out my GPU with cudaminer, and it's still perfectly functional, and I barely notice.  I may not be making much, but it costs me nothing to do so.

Received my FTC.  Thanks very much!

I think feathercoin is interesting since I am able to mine it more easily with limited hardware than I can with bitcoin.  Thanks.
6  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Apple Power Mac G4 933 Quicksilver, loaded, with extras - Toronto on: June 01, 2013, 01:03:00 AM

Well, security through obscurity is never a good practice, but yeah, a mostly offline PPC system that is only used to store a bitcoin wallet is probably fairly secure (assuming the wallet software actually runs on PPC Macs).  Or, more practically, a virtual machine that is used only for that purpose and is fully patched (and not windows) would also be good.

Anyway, I am going to reduce the price further to 1 BTC, firm.  I suppose I could sell this on ebay or craigslist for regular cash and then buy bitcoins with the proceeds, but I was hoping to make my first real, true bitcoin sale.  Thanks for the interest.  Also, I do have photos if anyone wants to see them.

Update: price reduced to 1.5 BTC.

9  Economy / Computer hardware / Apple Power Mac G4 933 Quicksilver, loaded, with extras - Toronto on: May 14, 2013, 11:50:11 AM
- 933 MHz G4 processor
- 1.5 Gb RAM
- 4 x USB 2.0 via PCI expansion card
- ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card w/ both ADC and DVI connectors

- 2 hard drives, 60 Gb and 100 Gb
- DVD superdrive
- Gigabit ethernet
- 2 x Firewire 400
- 2 x USB 1.0
- 56k Modem
- Apple USB keyboard and mouse
- Logitech stereo speakers

This is the Quicksilver model, one of the few capable of running OS 9 natively and able to boot the latest PowerPC compatible version of OS X, Leopard (10.5).  It has been significantly upgraded and expanded with the maximum RAM, a USB 2.0 expansion card, an upgraded ATI graphics card, and a second hard drive. The graphics card will work with any DVI monitor (or VGA with an adapter) or any proprietary Apple Display with an ADC connector.  It is also capable of driving dual monitors.

It is currently running a fresh install of Mac OS X Leopard (10.5), iLife '09 and iWork '09.

As a bonus, I am throwing in a USB extension cable, since the cable on the Apple keyboard is not long enough to reach the Power Mac when sitting on the floor.  Note that the monitor is *not* included, it is just there to show the system is working.

Everything is in great condition and working perfectly.  Available for local pickup in Toronto only.  Asking 2 BTC, but offers will be considered.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What is the best way to mine bitcoin? on: May 14, 2013, 12:06:27 AM

I've had a pretty good experience with mining.bitcoin.cz (Slush's pool).  It's been reliable with prompt payouts.  I'm using cgminer on OS X and have had no problems.
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Should I order BFL Single SC?! on: May 11, 2013, 11:50:28 PM

Well, I can (pitifully) mine for free.  I don't pay for electricity, and even if I did, I'm just using a Mac Mini 2011 (the model with the dedicated video card) which is very low power.  Horrible mining rate, but I have 0.06 BTC, and will soon have 0.11.  Not much, but it's free, and if BTC really takes off and scales, 0.1 BTC could be worth a million dollars in 10 years.  Once I get off newbie, I may sell some old Mac stuff for BTC.

As for butterfly, when I first saw the Jalapeno, it was hard drive sized, and USB bus-powered.  Arstechnica got a review unit of the same model and it was 5 times bigger and had to be plugged in.  So, what are the people who pre-ordered a year ago going to get?

I would consider buying something like this, but *only* when they are actually in stock and available with immediate shipping, so that I can make an accurate assessment of whether it is worth it or not based on the price being charged for the product.  Otherwise, things can change too much before the product eventually arrives.
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I don't get it... on: May 11, 2013, 11:03:44 AM

It's like going back 13 years and trying to build up my ebay reputation from scratch again.  Smiley
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why such restricted restrictions on Newbies? on: May 11, 2013, 11:02:19 AM

I didn't realize it would take a while before I could post to other boards, but I'll try to find the time to do so.  I just hope it doesn't take me a month.  Smiley

Hi, I'm new as well.  Would like to start selling some items using BTC in the near future.
