All I see in times like today and the last 8 months even are opportunities to buy. People need to stop investing and trading with emotion, make informed decisions and research what you're buying. Then research and do T.A. and F.A. when you're trading. Learn to play the long and short side to capitalize no matter what the market is doing. Simple things once you remove the emotion from it all.

Only one I've even heard of is Origin trail. Next time you should add a bit about each coin in your post to give the readers a bit of an idea what each one is trying to accomplish so we know who potential competitors might be.

for my favorite coins still bitcoin and ethereum, no one can replace them both. I think bitcoin and ethereum will still exist for a long time, and they will be even more valuable.
Bitcoin and Ethereum might not be going anywhere, but there are a lot better Dapp platforms being created with much better chances at scaling than ETH. Who knows though, it's a war out there!

So many coins to choose from!! I'll give 3, one for high, mid, and low cap to stir things up a bit!
High cap - EOS, while there are issues with centralization, it's clear from the trading volume and the support it gets from overseas that this coin is going nowhere, a safe and profitable long term play.
Mid cap - KMD, they've been around for a year and a half with a focus on building their technology and not worrying so much about the marketing. They are a platform coin for Dapps, DICO's and countless other things, like even including atomic swamps and privacy features. On the topic of privacy features, my low cap pick...
Low cap - XSPEC, if you haven't researched this coin yet I highly recommend you do, or if you only know about it from the FUD earlier in the year, that dev is gone with many new devs having taken over and bringing amazing privacy tech forward. Stealth addresses, ring signatures, natively built on the TOR network (unlike the other coins that pretend they are yet have exit nodes) with upcoming RingCT/stealth staking! Couple all that with PosV3 tech which means insanely fast/cheap transactions, XSPEC will essentially be a proof of stake version of Monero, much better for small remittances. This is a long term play for me, not a trade so the current low volume is a non-issue while the tech continues to be completed. Marketing can wait until the full product is built even though it's already a functional privacy coin, unlike most others.

With how 2018 is playing out it's probably best to look further into at least 2019 I'd say. I like both NEBL and XSPEC as well! If XSPEC can deliver everything they plan, they will essentially be a proof of stake Monero, natively built on TOR with stealth staking. So Monero (almost literally tech-wise + TOR and S.S.) with faster, cheaper transactions and you earn by staking? Seems like a winner to me if everything comes to fruition. This is a long play for me, I look back at September of 2015 and see XMR at $0.50 and think of what the future can bring with some patience. There are a LOT of good projects, at least in theory, it really does depend on who can deliver of course. Some of the projects I'm also invested or at least keeping an eye on are.... OMG EOS KMD RHOC VET ENG NPXS KIN QASH WAN That's not all but definitely some good projects in there.

My 3 pick is:
1) Waves - smart contracts implementation 2) Neblio - all languages for Dapps 3) Spectrecoin - ability to STAKE on STEALTH addresses
Agreed on all 3 of these! Everything is at a great buying price right now, and I am a big believer in the long term value of XSPEC as the top PoS privacy coin. If I was to add another 5 coins/tokens (long term not quick trades) I would go with... OMG RHOC VET ENG QASH Obviously a bunch of the top 10 will likely do well short and long term also.

Most people are mentioning the usual suspects in the top 20. For large cap I'm quite bullish on OMG, and I'll rattle off a bunch of low-mid caps that I think have good potential through December and into 2019. Always DYOR as I'm not going into detail on a bunch of coins.
RHOC, XSPEC, QASH, XBY, SHIFT, ENG, KMD, ITC, EVX, WAN, etc.
If we are actually at the bottom almost any coins will net you some nice returns during the next bull run, however finding the fundamentally strong ones that have staying power through 2019 and onward is the most important factor.

Although I find they concept of 'coins under 1$' to be shortsighted I get the appeal of finding A hidden gem taht still under $1 so you can load up on it. $ price is just a small fraction of what makes a coin an interesting invest. They biggest point of interest for me would be good tech, tech that's not just a copy or clone of some other coin that address an actual demand in the real world. Since I believe there is a big market for the right platform, my money would be on XTRABYTES (XBY) a highly secure superfast codeagnostic platform that will solve the problems of scalability a lot of other platforms are facing. Another big market for crypto currencies would be the privacy coins. Since BTC has become almost mainstream and can hardly be called a privacy coin, the demand for a truly anonymous coin is ongoing. Here is where I believe Spectrecoin (XSPEC) can make a huge difference, They have successfully implemented TOR and OBFS4 and offer stealthstaking, which is pretty unique. Both still way under 1$ and both still in full development with the potential of making a lot of profit.
Agreed, and I hold some of both of those. Other coins under $1 would be ARK, ICX, ENG, ITC, SHIFT, RHOC, BAT. Not necessarily all small caps but prices are still good for picking up the projects you believe in.

EVEREX, XSPEC, OAX all low cap with nice potential in the mid-long term. Not necessarily "new" per se, but I'd prefer coins/tokens that have a bit of life and continued development as it makes them a lot more trustworthy than these brand new ones full of promises.

With the vast number of coins and tokens it's impossible to predict who's next. First we wait on BTC to see how it dictates the market!
Some coins/tokens I'm keeping an eye on are EOS, OMG, ZIL, ICX, XSPEC, KMD, RHOC and many more. Too many choices really, we just have to do our due diligence and hope we get some of the big winners longer term!

There are honestly so many choices for a question like this. We can all guess and many will guess right and wrong. I see a lot of people mentioning some of the same ones I would also mention. BTC of course, however I'll go against the grain and NOT pick ETH. ADA, maybe EOS, ZIL, OMG, RHOC, KMD, TEZOS, XSPEC, VET, ENG are some of the ones I'm already in or interested in.

Many have mentioned XPSEC and I do agree with that being a potential moonshot over the next couple years, just don't think it's an overnight thing.
Some other small caps with potential are SHIFT, EVEREX and OAX.

This thread is a little bit older now, but now certainly is a good time to be stocking up on coins/tokens that you see potential in. I have too many that I want to get bags of but alas, only so much money to buy them all!
If using the $8000 like the OP asked, you certainly want to have a mix between large, medium and small caps.
Small cap I'm (as some have also mentioned) mostly looking at Spectrecoin (XSPEC) as I see a bright future for it in the privacy space. Might take until 2019 or 2020, but I see it as a long term play specifically.
Mid cap coins I'm looking at ENG, QASH, WAN, WABI, RHOC, 0x and some others.
Large cap at these prices are almost guaranteed to bring you profit with patience, just not as large of multipliers as the small-mid cap. EOS can be good to snag some free airdropped tokens, however there is always some FUD around it too, the good thing is it never really hurts the price.

|
1) Monero (XMR)
2) Spectrecoin (XSPEC)
3) Zcoin (XZC)
Edit: I missed the "small cap" part, but those would be my 3, I guess XSPEC is definitely small cap, then maybe PHORE and ZOIN perhaps?

Lots of debate over Stratis and QTUM it seems. Both have been significantly higher than their current price points (obviously) but QTUM has the bigger multiplier back to ATH if that's your thing. Pretty close though!
As for lower cap sleeping giant, I see some people have mentioned XSPEC. I do hold some Spectrecoin as I believe it looks like the PoSV3 version of Monero. A few years back XMR was like 50 cents, and we know how the next few years played out, I'm hoping to see the same with XSPEC.
Some mid-high cap I would be looking at ZIL, ICX, RHOC, KMD, VET, OMG among others.

|
|
I see some others have mentioned Spectrecoin, and I'd be inclined to agree with them. Major developments happening and a lot of room to grow in the privacy space. Some others like ARK, OMG, VET, KMD, RHOC, and ICX are interesting options at these prices as well.

Better would be investing in Bitcoin, but if you don't trust it, then choose Ethereum, certain altcoin which will grow, maybe only a little bit, but will the price'll be better than now.
It's between bitcoin and ethereum for the first and second choice. I see that there are too many people here that are saying that XSPEC is a good one. I don't have any interest with that coin or whatever will be for that coin in the future. Invest only to the coins that you are sure of it that's going to be big in the future. I think you're a little quick to dismiss XSPEC honestly. There was some big FUD earlier in the year, and now that it has all been cleared with the project development happening at an incredible rate, it's definitely something to look out for. I have many bags, but it's definitely one of the small caps I'm holding long term as a lottery ticket if you will.

Prices are great right now to stock up on good alts. Always DYOR but some of my favorites are:
- OMG - XPSEC - KMD - ICX - RHOC
Best of luck, let's all stay patient!

As of right now Monero is clearly the best privacy coin. Let's not forget 3 years ago XMR was around $0.50 and still working on fixing a lot of previous issues. That's how I'm treating XSPEC and will continue to hold both of these coins.
For the person who was wondering how a PoSV3 coin can maintain privacy with staking, the devs are working on a proof of stealth (essentially anonymous staking) slated for Q1 2019. IF they succeed with that, I don't see any reason XSPEC can't be the PoSV3 version of Monero. Both use ring sigs, stealth addresses, XPSEC has native TOR integration while XMR is working on Kovri. Stealth staking and some version of RingCT would put them neck and neck tech wise, so I'll see how we look coming into 2020! Patience can be rewarded in this space.

Ya, it's the end, just like when it was from $1-10 and back to $2, then when it went from $100, to $1200, and back to $200. Let's not forget the dozens of other times Bitcoin went up and had a correction, you know, like a normal market cycle should. Also just like this one. As if this thread has continued on this long lol, what a joke.
