I can lay in bed in the hotel of Zermatt and enjoy the mountain view or go ski for 6 months and walk along the Geneva lake for the next half year. no visa/id/paper asked.

BTW, are you guys aware that almost all americans are european and asian "immigrants"  Grin Grin Grin

OK, letīs stop this. lets stay polite to eachother.

Yes of course, but that is not the issue.

The issue is that the last time I checked, there is not a country in the world that you can go to, just cross the border, and say "I'm going to live here permanently now." It doesn't, and shouldn't ever work like that.

Ummmmm Have you heard about the European Union?

Edit: 3 years ago I finished my PhD, I crossed a border (by plane) and I said "I'm going to live here as long as I want."

It's not quite that easy, you can cross the border in the EU, but you can only stay in another country for three months unless you get a job or study. And it could be argued that the EU is a de facto country.

FUD.
If you are from one of the schengen area state, you can do whatever you want for as long as you like within the 26 schengen states without needing any extra ids or paper.

26 states:
    Austria
    Belgium
    Czech Republic
    Denmark
    Estonia
    Finland
    France
    Germany
    Greece
    Hungary
    Iceland
    Italy
    Latvia
    Liechtenstein
    Lithuania
    Luxembourg
    Malta
    Netherlands
    Norway
    Poland
    Portugal
    Slovakia
    Slovenia
    Spain
    Sweden
    Switzerland

Again, no, you can only stay for three months if you do not have a job or are studying.
There are a lot of misunderstandings about the Schengen agreement.

I am a citizen from one of the schengen state, i can and i have stay in Switzerland, German, Greece, Finland(which its quite boring at there) each more than 6 months up to almost two years without being required anything. i am a trust fund baby and the goal is just to enjoy the nice view and different life around the world so i don't work nor study at those places.
