If you’ve been next to a port lately, or just strolled down a beach and stared off vacantly into the horizon, you might have noticed a very interesting phenomenon: Approaching ships do not just “appear” out of the horizon (like they should have if the world was flat), but rather seem to emerge from beneath the sea.

its a game of strategy, resource collection, collaboration, and competition. Quicker pace and more fun than monopoly.

A healthy eating plan also will lower your risk for heart disease and other health conditions. A healthy eating plan: Emphasizes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. Limits saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars.

If you turn to your MP3 collection when you're stressed out, you're not alone. The American Psychological Association found that a majority of people polled for the last two years running claim music as their number one stress reliever.

Actually chance is basically just a deaf god, and is no more plausible as a reason for anything than your god. The biblical god is without a doubt long since disproven so there is no question if there is a creator-it wasnt that god, the doctrine defining him is pretty much wrong about everything and he should be a dead god by now, but due to the motivations behind chrsitainity, it is designed to end reason, and for its purpose, its brilliant.

The planet doesn't need saving. Even if we had an all-out nuclear war that wiped out all living organisms, except for cockroaches and Keith Richards, the planet would still survive. Of course, the planet may look more like Uranus (yes, read that out loud) but will still be around. What anti-pollution efforts really are trying to do is save humans.
8  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why are rich countries rich and poor countries poor? on: September 26, 2017, 01:18:27 PM
the explanations offered were along the lines of geography, climate, soil fertility, resource endowments, culture, religion, work ethic, ignorance of economic principles and more. However, these hypotheses fail to satisfactorily explain the patterns of poverty and prosperity in today’s world. Modern scholarship points in a different direction.
9  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why do people believe in conspiracy theories? on: September 26, 2017, 01:07:36 PM
factors are at work in creating a conspiratorial mind. Uscinski and Parent note that in laboratory experiments “researchers have found that inducing anxiety or loss of control triggers respondents to see nonexistent patterns and evoke conspiratorial explanations” and that in the real world “there is evidence that disasters (e.g., earthquakes) and other high-stress situations (e.g., job uncertainty) prompt people to concoct, embrace, and repeat conspiracy theories.”

When Libertarians like Dr Paul assert that government should not take care of people, he is apparently imagining, as most Republicans do, that people receiving government subsidies are lazy and undeserving. Lazy undeserving people definitely exist and I believe they project their own desire not to work onto physically and mentally disabled folks. Those who receive public assistance are carefully screened and are disabled. I think Dr Paul would agree that disabled folks need public subsidies, as would most Republicans agree. They simply default into thinking that people receiving subsidies simply don't want to work.

Sometimes I read the news and I feel powerless. There are hundreds of people leaving home to join the radical militant groups every week. What can we even do in the face of such situations? How can peace ever be achieved? It is not clear what our role is in a conflict that in many ways is over and above us.
12  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Why We Should Hate Crime, Not Criminals ? on: September 26, 2017, 10:43:19 AM
It isn’t as black and white as it’s portrayed there, but it does provide a strong argument for reserving our harshest disapproval for the crimes we encounter, rather than the criminals who commit them. Until the playing field evens out for all participants, society lends itself to criminal acts. In the meantime, we should continue striving to eliminate crime, rather than personalizing the revolving door of criminals that perpetrate them.
