1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitmessage Address Book on: June 12, 2013, 05:44:18 AM
BM-2D9tpN1g82FC9hhC8eof5BiH3Dc2NCTzQ6

Just tested it by sending a message to someone from Reddit. They must not be on though, no reply. My understanding is that eventually, if he does not reply the message vanishes?
If he doesn't come ONLINE, the message disappears. They can only be downloaded dependably for two days after they are sent.

The message is only kept in the network for around 2 day, but if you don't get an ACK message after that your client will resend the message.  Broadcast messages are gone after 2 days, but direct messages will be resent after that 2 days as long as the sending client is online.

How about using an algorithm that cannot be done on a GPU? Something that needs single threaded performance. RSA comes to mind, as I think the CPU performance is much higher than when you run it on a GPU.  There is probably something better out there.  This will put the currency in the hands of the users that want to use the coin, instead of miner that buy the most GPUs.  Also, there are tons of scrypt based altcoins already.

oO How they do this? And why dont they transport and sell the power to a power exchange?

From looking at the website, they are using hydro power which is pretty cheap in the long run as you don't have to buy fossil fuels.  They may also already sell the excess power to an exchange, who said they don't? It also appears to be a coop, which means they only pass along actual costs and don't charge additional for profit more than they need to run the business.  If they also sell the excess generation, that additional income would also reduce the rate for customers in the coop.

Simply put, I have access to excess computing resources and power.

Simply put, you work at a place where there are lot of computers under your supervision.

Making them basically free.

And you've got that idea that as it's not you who pay the bills, you could screw your employer, use some more power, and they probably won't notice or won't care and pay your bill.

You should actually write:

Quote from: Wabba should actually write
I think I can steal power from my employer and get away with it. I can also use their computers without them knowing. Send me your GPUs and we'll both benefit from it.

If it's not the case then I'm genuinely sorry for my accusations and I am equally genuinely interested in how one can get “access to excess computing resources and power which are free” without stealing/screwing anyone.

You apparently know nothing about data centers.  Let me educate you a little.  You can purchase space in a data center to put your equipment in.  This is called colocation. When you purchase the space, you also purchase power drops for whatever power you need. The power is billed at a set rate per amp a month. It is not a metered rate.  So if I have a cabinet of 40 server, but only 20 of them are actually leased to customers, I have 20 servers sitting there doing nothing.  The price I pay for power is already a set cost, and is the same every month whether I have one server powered on or 40. So it is not actually free, but for mining purposes it is effectively "free" as it costs me no more than it would that month already.  I hope that explains it better.  And thanks for being a dick!

Simply put, I have access to excess computing resources and power.  Making them basically free.  I have everything needed to mine 24/7 except for the GPUs.  I would like to find a partner that perhaps has some GPUs that it is no longer profitable for them to mine with due to higher power costs where they live.  If anyone would be interested, send me a PM, or ask any questions you have.

What i dont understand yet is the power cost. Its so very low that it seems unbelievable to me. I thought about finding cheaper power in my country but it seems not possible. At least in a reasonable scale.
So when you get so low power cost... why isnt the creator of the power selling it into energy exchange? I mean they would get a better price there. Why is it sold so low?

If you dont want to answer in public, please send me a pm. Its not that i could take your source since im on the other side of the earth... Smiley

Washington state does have some of the lowest energy prices in the country, but even then .02/kwh is still unbelievably low. http://www.bls.gov/ro9/cpiseat_energy.pdf shows the average for Seattle area at .09, so I'm not sure how he could get it for .02.

This is a great idea.  I was thinking of doing the same thing as I have access to free hardware/power. Let me know if you have anyone that wants to do this in the US.

I plan on seeing it when it comes out.  Otherwise, Iron Man 3 was pretty good.

my I Phone was hacked and 179 Bit coins were stolen yesterday.  I was using block chain.  Is there any recourse or could it have been an inside job.  at the same exact moment I was hacked my friend was also hacked and lost all of his bit coins.  He has an I phone as well.

With bitcoin, once the coins are gone, they are gone for good.  It's meant to be like cash for a reason, and you should protect it like cash.
