1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Ethereum and POS on: August 24, 2017, 10:17:52 PM
I had been thinking about the consequences of Ethereum switching to POS it and I woul like to share my thoughts and get your opinions on this.

We all know that the main innovation introduced by Ethereum is the capacity of creating different distributed applications in front of the Bitcoin network which is completely devoted to a single 'application': the transmission of value.

When switching to POS the Ethereum network will become completely self-sustained and disconnected from the physical world since miners and their hadrware won't be needed anymore. However, this means that you can create an Ethereum-like network with exact the same properties and security just by hardforking the original one. Since all the networks would be equivalent the difference would be given by the use which, in turn, would depend on the functionality deployed into them. Since the Ethereum network at present is mostly used as an investment vehicle rather than a gas-fueled dapp platform. Do you think that the original network could be overtaken as what happened with pure-POS coins Nem and Nxt (in fact Nem was just inspired in Nxt, but you know what i mean...)?
2  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [ANN]photos4bitcoins.com - get custom photos from around the world for cryptos on: April 21, 2014, 09:50:34 PM
You really take the pictures yourself or you just find them from around the internet?
The idea is that you can request pictures from any place/event around the world or you can offer yourself to take pictures from your area. Internet pictures (if not copyrighted) have generally poor quality and do not usually fulfill what you want/need from a picture.

We have updated the application so that users can now offer their services as photographers. In the 'photographer' section of the user page, users can add different locations where they can take photos by clicking the location on the map and specifying the distance they can cover around this location. Other relevant information can be specified such as: photographer experience, available hardware, rates, coins accepted....

Our data encryption scheme was weak against a man-in-the-middle attack. We have solved this issue.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: bitaddress.org - bug generating private keys? on: March 26, 2014, 06:39:13 PM
Thanks for your response. I didn't know that the private key was formatted like a Bitcoin address (version byte plus checksum bytes at the end). Is it possible to import a raw private key (i.e. a 256 bit random number) or is mandatory to format the key in that way?
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / bitaddress.org - bug generating private keys? on: March 26, 2014, 10:21:31 AM
Hi,

I've visited bitaddress.org to generate a paper wallet, but all the private adddresses generated start with '5H', '5J' or '5K'. Anyone knows if this is a bug of the RNG, javascript, browser... or whatever?
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Can we please stop saying that it is improbable to generate an inuse key? on: March 12, 2014, 12:51:24 AM
To make myself clear I've done the calculation of the acumulative probability of a collision as the addresses are generated. This probability increases with the square of the number of generated addrsses. If we consider the most restrictive case: the 160 bit space of the public key hash, a 1% probabiliy of bitcoin addresses collision will be reached when 1.2x10^23 bitcoin addresses are generated. This means that a million machines generating 30 million addresses/second each would need a thousand years to reach a 1% probability of a single collision.

Facts and maths are great, but you never know do you!

That's why I've had my vanitygen running on the satoshi wallets since 2011.
Lol @ vanitygen. I've written a much optimized version. With 30k addresses, it generates AND compares with 33 million keys per second on the CPU. Vanitygen is much slower.

2^256 is approx. 10^77, the age of our universe is 4x10^17 s approx. Even if you had a trillion machines (10^12) generating 100 million addresses per second since the big bang you would cover the 0.00000000000000000000000000000000000000001% of the 256 bit configuration space. It is more likely that a frappuccino pass through Mark Karperles by tunnel effect.

Edit: if we only consider the 160-bit space corresponding to the public key hash. The same trillion machines working since the Big Bang would only cover the 0.000000000001%, so it can be safely said that generating used keys is improbable.

Pretty nice idea but IMHO most people gonna use graphic from google or take a photo on they own. Good luck and wish you many customers.
Thanks. Sorry for my ignorance, but what's this 'graphic' project from google? Did google put a smart camera on every corner of the planet and I didn't heard about it?  Tongue

As much as the service sounds really good,
the name doesn't.

It just looks more like a money milker than a "service"

Thanks for your comment. It wasn't our preferred name, but we chose it because it includes the keywords 'photo' and 'bitcoin' in the domain name and we didn't want something like: thisismyveryexplicativedomainname.com  Grin

20  Bitcoin / Project Development / [ANN]photos4bitcoins.com - get custom photos from around the world for cryptos on: March 06, 2014, 10:13:37 AM
Hello everyone ,

I would like to introduce our little contribution to the cryptoeconomy: photos4bitcoins.com. This is a website where you can get photos from anywhere in the world for cryptocurrencies. If you need a picture for a website, a photo of an event... or for any other reason, you just have to offer some coins and maybe a bitcoiner (or 'altcoiner') will take the photo for you. Of course, you can also get some cryptos by submitting photos to requests from other users.

If one of your submitted photos is chosen by another user you will be required to send a coin address to receive the reward. photos4bitcoins.com never takes charge of the users coins. Transactions are made directly between users and the role of the website is limited to the custody of digital photographs.

The site is quite simple and uses a geographic interface to simplify the location of the requests. For now, only basic functionality has been implemented, but we will be adding more functionality based mainly on user's feedback.

Suggestions and feedback will be greatly appreciated. We hope you find it useful!

PS : You'll notice that the site does not use digital certificate (we hate to pay for a simple pair of keys). As the site does not require a high level of privacy, we do not consider it as essential. However, the most sensitive data (email, password and coin addresses) are sent encrypted to the server using javascript-based 1024 bit RSA encryption.

update 09-March-2014:
  - implementation of server-client encryption for payment address download.
  - QR-code visualization of payment addresses.

update 24-march-20214:
  - added comment box and report button
