The only altcoin I have any faith in at this time are Litecoins.  Litecoins ARE a necessary diversification away from BTC should something bad happen to SHA256 and whatnot  Grin

I think everyone here would agree with me in that it's never wise to put all of your eggs in one (BTC) basket.   Smiley

What's SHA256?

Is it true that I can't even start a new thread in the newbie section, I can only reply to others?? Naaahhh. I must just be overlooking the new thread button.

ho hum this is my seventh post.

It gets hidden by the formatting because there are so many pages in the newbie section. For me it got squashed way over on the right side of my screen. Of course, it sort of depends on your screen size and browser.

Some PulseNews articles I read. I had heard about it a long time ago but thought it sounded kind of silly and expected it to die soon afterwards.

To be honest, I still think it's a little silly but if people value it, I'm down to explore that further. Seems wrought with shady activity though...

8  Other / Beginners & Help / Python Error? [FIXED] on: May 20, 2013, 04:56:45 PM
I'm completely new to mining and I'm running into problems from the get-go.

I've tried using the GUI miner here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3878.0

As well as the command line following the guide here: http://www.newslobster.com/random/how-to-get-started-using-your-gpu-to-mine-for-bitcoins-on-windows

For both of these methods I receive the error "ValueError: too many values to unpack!"

So far as I can tell, it's a python error which is a language I know very little about. Does anyone know where I should start for addressing this error?

Potentially Relevant info:
  • Windows 8 Pro; 32-bit OS, x64-based processor
  • Intel Core i5-2500 CPU @ 3.30Ghz 3.60 Ghz
  • 4 GB RAM
  • AMD Radeon HD 6850; Driver: 12.104.0.0 - Catalyst 13.4 (3-28-2013)
  • Python 2.7.5

Edit: My chosen password had special characters which apparently isn't allowed.

Ok cool, thanks. That's probably as close to a consensus as the internet can provide.

If power consumption isn't an issue, is it worth my time to power up an old laptop and have it CPU mining? It's only like 5 years old so it's not a great CPU.

The laptop is pretty much dead to me anyway so I don't mind if it's quickly killed by the process.

**Edit/Conclusion: Not worth it**

I'm just starting out as a semi-professional photographer and I'm interested in the idea of selling some of my pictures for bitcoins. What sort of resources will I need to make that happen both for online sales and real world person-to-person sales? Also considering the volatility of bitcoin value, how can I ensure that I am not cheating my customers or myself on a day-to-day basis?

Are the alt coins created by the same people who made bitcoin or are they all independent?
