1  Economy / Trading Discussion / Accurately calculating cost basis for positions on: January 07, 2018, 01:55:25 AM
Placing limit orders for more than a few BTC mostly results in a long list of fills, sometimes over many minute during which price of both the target coin and BTC may fluctuate considerably. Trade history for most ecahnges does not list the BTC/USD value at the time of the trade and keeping this pair open on another chart may not be of any help in real time as fills can happen very rapidly. Some exchanges do not even list a XXX/USD pair for the target coin making it really difficult to accurately figure out the cost basis of a position. Using another exchange for the BTC/USD is not helpful as the price can be very different.

Anyone have any tricks for this I might not have thought of?

(Cost basis is an important metric for several aspects of trading, accounting and taxation so please no responses along the lines of why do you need that :/ )

Why is the only option you are considering a buy and hold strategy?
There are lots of trades to be made that could get you there more quickly

Not likely it will happened, a continuous popularity of Bitcoin is leading its price to unexpected amount, probably the price of bitcoin is only going to fall in very short period of time.
People are realizing the shortcomings and rotating into other coins with more % gain possability

There should be something to cope up with the sudden spike in global demand related to cryptocurrencies. This is what we are lacking and may prove to be disastrous for crypto-economy if nothing is done soon.

could not agree more. This is a classic scaling problem. At some point throwing more processing at the problem will not help.
When the curve of demand vs processing goes vertical, the next increment in demand will gap away form the curve and the system will be degraded...

Arn't we there already?

What happens when the herd arrives?

This may cause BTC holders to rotate out and price to suffer... perhaps that happened the last few weeks?

8  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: CME derivatives contract on: December 17, 2017, 12:53:03 AM
I dont think you understand the price action we have seen.
BTC to 3000 you are joking I assume. Worst case it could test 10k but the indicators say that is not going to happen
Institutional INvestors still believe this is just tulip mania from which to derive a few quick bucks. They dont get it because their generation had banking at its core. Its hard to let go of lifelong beliefs
9  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: CME derivatives contract on: December 16, 2017, 03:17:30 AM
CME plans to have a 5 BTC contract... so its for large players only
they also plan to trip "circuit breakers" if the daily price changes > 20% (ridiculous)
They plan to run the exchange from 9-5 on weekdays iike the old open outcry S&P 500 (mindboggling)
S&P mini runs all the time, why shouldnt this?
they also require a 35% margin for a leveraged derivitive ??

This is 19th century thinking applied to a 21st century product.

BTC is a 24/7 market. BTC has volatility which is what makes it a great trading vehicle.

How do they plan to settle when it tanks 50% on Friday afternoon 30% on Saturday and 40% on Sunday?
Then Monday morning they open the exchange? absurd

When regulation hits, as it will, and these products are classified as securities, which they are, and owning them is a criminal offence, you are going to see retail investors PANIC. Whats CME going to do? Close up shop and go to the lake for the weekend...

Cannot wait to see what happens on Monday

Electroneum has potential, but their market cap is an issue for investors
Butbay is interesting and so is deep onion
13  Economy / Speculation / Re: Are you sure that bitcoin will fall? on: December 15, 2017, 05:22:13 PM
Bit coin has been consolidating for days. Have you looked at the Fib levels of support? I could and should test a major level of support (not 10k) before too long. That strengthens the bull run.
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: 5 alt coins to hodl in 2018 on: December 15, 2017, 03:07:03 AM
I like the concept of DeepOnion. I will probably buy some of their coins and see about signing up for the airdrop

You do realise that the RECEIVING wallet has absolutely NO control over the fees right? Roll Eyes If the transaction was sent with a low fee, blame the sender... they're the one who set the transaction up and set it with a low fee. As a receiver, the ONLY recourse you have is to attempt a "Child Pays For Parent".

After de-snarking your reply...

Yes you are correct.. and yes I realize that.

The PROBLEM is that Electrum is STILL showing two xfers as not confirmed. now 8 days.

I assumed that I could not send these coin anywhere since they were not confirmed.
I also assumed that not confirmed meant that they were not really in my wallet and stuck in transit so to speak.
I decided to test these assumptions by sending a couple of coin to an exchange and... they were confirmed at the exchange where i promptly bought the latest zombie coin... that will be revived... we hope

So there seems to b a problem with Electrum after all. Perhaps the software is waiting for 8 confirmations to label the xfer as confirmed, but it is in fact mine after less than that. I guess I need to look at the code. Is it opensource on github?

So this wallet is now annoying me and I am looking for a wallet that supports Segwit to replace it once I have time to research that some more...

16  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: confirmation at 5 days and counting (electrum)- wallet for best control of fees? on: December 11, 2017, 10:33:41 PM
This post is about RECEIVING BTC. No slider. No control... 6 days and counting

I love the wallet, but I cannot work with this.
Again, BTC sent from the SAME sender to another address confirmed in hours....
17  Bitcoin / Electrum / confirmation at 5 days and counting (electrum)- wallet for best control of fees? on: December 11, 2017, 02:45:33 AM
I have the Electrum wallet. I have a two transactions marked as NOT VERIFIED after 5 days. this is ridiculous. The "slider" is no longer in the preferences. I am guessing upgrading the fees after the transaction will not affect the transfers in progress.... Urgh. Who distributes an installer without warning the users of this choice at INSTALL TIME

I like the wallet and I understand the network is congested, but my xfers to another broker are confirmed within a day.

With market volatility like this I need to trade these coins. I assume I cannot xfer them from my Electrum wallet until they have been confirmed?

What wallet has the best control of fess and makes it really obvious and user friendly to understand. Which wallet has the best reputation for fast confirmations due to their effective contril of fees?

19  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Transaction Speeds on: November 07, 2017, 05:47:00 AM
I am trying to understand how a distributed network can ever hope to compete with centralized processing speeds of major banks that typically clear 25k transactions per second.

I get the appeal of a decentralized currency and want to back an alt currency that could be deployed in confidence to solve low latency, high transaction problems like gaming or offshore wires like the Western Union Business.

Electroneum wants this markets and I like this coin, but how are they going to solve the latency problems.

My question is really, is a distributed block chain a feasable soltution?
Do any altcoins have the capability of processing that many transactions?
