1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Cash keys question on: May 15, 2018, 03:09:07 PM
Of course not!
If it has already been removed of course you can't claim it again from a different wallet, just imagine how easy it would be to duplicate money ^^

Indeed, I thought I might have encountered some weird bug or something.

OK I tried claiming some and it won't work so I guess it was displaying the BCH as still claimable for some reason even though it had already been moved.
3  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Bitcoin Cash keys question on: May 14, 2018, 08:06:32 PM
I had an old bitcoin wallet that I've since emptied and already claimed the Bitcoin Cash from. The BCH has also been transferred to a different wallet, but I recently re-scanned the private keys to the original bitcoin wallet to claim Bitcoin Gold, and noticed that the BCH still appeared as claimable. How can this be if it's already been transferred to a completely different wallet? Do the private keys remain the same with BCH even across wallets somehow??

Before sweep:
Old private keys: 1 BTC + 1 BCH
New private keys: 0 BTC + 0 BCH

Yes that's a useful explanation. Thanks for the responses. I managed to get hold of the BCH after much messing around. Smiley

I recently sweeped an old bitcoin wallet into electrum and successfully extracted what was in there. I'm now trying to get the bitcoin cash using electron. The old bitcoin wallet has thousands of private keys and it's a hassle to scan them all, but the newly sweeped eletrum bitcoin wallet has a lot less (the active keys from the thousands).
Do these active keys remain the same after being sweeped, or do they change? So far when sweeping the old keys it has not shown any bitcoin cash (they should be there as the the funds existed through the fork).
The addresses/keys in your new Electrum wallet WON'T have any BitcoinCash on them... because you SWEPT... which means you moved the BTC from the old bitcoin wallet keys onto new keys in Electrum.

So you can't sweep the Electrum keys looking for BCH, as the BTC was put onto Electrum keys after the fork. You would need to either sweep or import the OLD keys from your "old bitcoin wallet", but using ElectronCash instead of Electrum.

Oh yes I understand that, it's the old keys I've been trying to use get the BCH, but so far it hasn't worked and I don't really know why.

Maybe I didn't explain clearly enough as some of the replies seem a bit conflicted. I was asking if the old private keys which I have now sweeped into electrum remain the same after being sweeped, or does the new wallet which they have been sweeped into generate new private keys? In other words, are the old private keys still active and remain the same inside the new wallet?

OK thanks.

OK I thought so, but just to be clear, a private key can't change if sweeped into a new wallet with a new public key/wallet, right?

9  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: need help restoring old wallet on: November 10, 2017, 02:32:03 PM
They only show as "unused" because your restored Armory is not online, so can't see any transactions for your addresses. How can it tell if the address was used or not if it cannot see the blockchain data? Wink

Did any of the addresses that it generated show any transaction history if you look for the address on a blockexplorer? Chances are that you need to just look further down the list, and/or you need to find the "change" addresses that are holding your coins from any transactions that you have previously made.

Without knowing the full details of your transaction history... ie. how many send/receives you did, it's difficult to know in which address the coins are likely to be in now. However, if you can see transaction history for these addresses, at least you know you're on the right track.

Personally, I would just use a text editor to get a list of the "addresses", then bulk import the addresses into an Electrum "watching only" wallet... find the addresses that have the coins, and then import/sweep those private keys. (or maybe just bulk import all the private keys?)

OK, something like this did cross my mind. The list of unused private keys was huge, and I only tried to import a few of them. None of those had anything on them. So, if what you're saying is correct then at least one on this list will have the bitcoin on? As far as I know, the bitcoin was loaded onto the wallet a few years ago and hasn't been touched since.

I don't think the exported data showed any wallet addresses, only private keys.

Edit: Oh no I see there's an option to get the wallet addresses. I think probably the best option is to bulk sweep private keys.
10  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: need help restoring old wallet on: November 09, 2017, 02:10:37 PM
That's what I tried to do, but it seems that the active private keys are not available unless armory is online. I did manage to get a huge list of "unused" private keys, but I think all of these will be empty right? I tried a few of them (there had to be something like 1000) and all were empty.
Is there any way to use the root key on an online instance of Armory?
11  Bitcoin / Armory / need help restoring old wallet on: November 08, 2017, 04:05:48 PM
I am trying to assist a friend who has an old armory wallet but has little understanding of how to access it. Being unfamiliar with the Armory software I'd appreciate some advice.

He has the root key for the wallet, which I inputted into the offline armory software. The result was Armory acknowledged the validity of the wallet but could not give me any info on the private key as it was offline.

My question is, how do I get full access to the wallet and its private keys? Do I have to download the entire blockchain on the online version of Armory on a different computer and sync it with the offline one, or is there a more simple way? (if so, can this be done on a single computer rather than using two?)

He doesn't want to keep any of the bitcoin on the armory wallet anymore, so sweeping it into a different wallet and making the bitcoin easily accessible without using Armory anymore is what we're looking for.

Thanks for any help.
