Of those in power:
The unintelligent ones won't be able to adapt and fight to preserve what they have, only postponing the inevitable. The intelligent ones will takes this time to adapt and preserve their power. Honestly, not even that much intelligence is needed for them to pull that off.
Good point; those who aren't quite so bright will think they have a better chance trying to fight Bitcoin. But that's like trying to fight the Internet; you just won't win, and from what I've gathered about men in power, they're not very tech-savvy, so I don't predict many will attempt to adopt Bitcoin, or even see why it's the path of least resistance. The US dollar's a sinking ship, and those who take the time to understand why Bitcoin is so vital at a time like this will persevere in the end. Then this poses a completely different question. Once "those in power" realize the potential and shift to bitcoins, will they then try to control bitcoin? They have the money to drive up the market, and at that point they will have the bitcoins to demolish the market as well. So is bitcoin really as distruptive as we think it is? Perhaps this is not only an economic experiment but a social experiment as well. With the goal of understanding the socioeconomic balance of power and just how far "those in power" are willing to go to preserve it. So my original question was not geared towards numbers but social, economic, and socioeconomic implications.

I've recently been given 0.01btc in a display of generosity from primedice.com and would like to repay the favour and pass it on to a genuine newbie. Let me be perfectly clear on this: I am not a primedice shill. The btc they gave me was entirely unsolicited and I have not had any communication with primedice either before or after this transaction arrived. I have also never gambled at primedice. In fact, to this date I have no idea who the guys behind primedice are. Nonetheless, they did a nice thing for me and so I would like to repay the favour. If you meet the following conditions: 1 - Your account still has the newbie tag on it 2 - Your account was created before the date of this post ......then you are eligible to enter. I am thinking of a number between 1 and 100. The first user to meet the above criteria and post the number I am thinking of with their wallet address will be sent the 0.1 btc with no strings attached. This draw is not provably fair - if you have a problem with that, don't enter! - In the event of the same winning number being posted twice, the first to post it wins - You must post a wallet address. If two people post the winning number and only one has a wallet address, the user with the wallet address wins, regardless of whether they were first to post it or not. I think that's all.... Good luck! 7.. it's always 7! And are you giving away 0.01 or 0.1 BTC? Your post is not very clear. Either way, thanks! ![Grin](https://bitcointalk.org/Smileys/default/grin.gif) 19EggL7ymR2w8ZHS7gFv8L9oW8sn9wiqDA

Well the point of putting all the time in at once is to be able to post on the more legitimate threads and be able to browse by topics of interest. I can learn and read about things that I may not have experience in, but I can most certainly contribute in areas of greater expertise.

Think of it like initiation. It's a bit hard to physically haze you online so mental hazing is all they have left.

So as I'm sitting here in the newbie section I can't help but wonder where this is all going.. Where do you believe bitcoin will be in a week? A month? 5 years?
My speculation: -1 week.. Nothing too different, fluctuations going crazy -1 month.. Maybe another few exchanges and services. -5 years.. New world currency in which all government currency will be backed (if it still exists). Only countries that are too stubborn will still use their own currency. And inevitably, some wildly creative use that will revolutionize commerce.

If you don't mind getting verified, an exchange is probably your best bet. Try craigslist if you dare. Maybe post in a mining pool forum and see if any miners need/want to cash out.

If I was an ASIC maker I would take everyone's money for pre-orders for development, and "test" all the ASICs for about a month before shipping them out. Would make much more money than I would actually selling them. Also, could probably 51% attack the network. But why ruin a good thing?

Interesting.
5430 Satoshis does seem like a magic number. Any insight as to how it was derived? The release notes just says that's the amount, without explaining why, as if the number just came down on a stone tablet from the sky.
I'm glad to see the lower minimum TX fee. I think it should be even lower. The blocks aren't maxing out yet, at 1MB/block. There's still plenty of headroom to accept more transactions.
5430 must be a clue! To what? I do not know, but a clue nonetheless.
