1  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: BitCrack - A tool for brute-forcing private keys on: January 03, 2022, 03:59:54 PM
I have a question. Recently there was a flood and a notebook containing a offline wallet was damage and it destroyed part of a WIF private key, so now I basically have:

Kw**********(I have the next 40 characters, just not posting for obvious reasons), so I am missing 10 characters in all.

I also have the public key. Is it possible to use this software to start a search at Kw... and iterate over the missing 10 characters with the known 40 characters also in the key.

For example : 1GuqEWwH5iRZ89oo5xw26FqmyZFMWZrtPi - is the public address

and for the WIF private key I'd have Kw**********JzXaqU2rcFSoaLaehAQHqoQX1cWCo92tAA3ihLJ7

Any advice is appreciated and examples are even more appreciated Smiley

Thank you,
S.

It's a good thing that you have end of WIF format data where the checksum is. You have to first Base58 decode the string (with corrupted part, or you can replace the corrupted part with zeros). Since you are doing it only once you can use this online tool:
https://www.browserling.com/tools/base58-decode

Once you have decoded number you can use the checksum to quickly check the possible missing values, if the checksum does not match you do not need the other calculations to get public key and check against it.
This is enormous speed-up, this is doable even on CPU, no need for GPU.

I doubt that you have some ready made tool for this second step, have to do some work yourself to code checking the missing values against the checksum. Good luck!

Edit:
Just tried it with some test values, you have to do Base58 Decode for all possible versions of missing values, not only once, string before corrupted characters stays the same but Base58 Encode changes all values after the corrupted place.

However, this is still much, much faster then generating Public key, doable on CPU for sure.

I believe I tried this with CPU and it was going to take a crazy amount of years to go through all combos. So perhaps I am doing something wrong. I am willing to pay a bounty for any help and code examples provided.

Thanks,
S.

Sure you need  58^10  combinations, which is quite a lot. There is no other way that I see.
So you need a fast algorithm.
I could probably write something in Javascript or Python but they will not be fast enough I fear.

Is there no way to read one of the 10 missing characters even slightly ?
sometimes you can try to see where the paper is slightly pressed by the pen?
What kind of reward did you have in mind ?

Bit disappointing.
It is not even a proper answer to the question.
And no clever tricks either, just guess until you have it...  as far as I see it.

Still, Nice of Blockladder to put up a Bitcoin.
And congrats to whoever found it (if it wasn't blockladder himself)

It was still fun to be puzzling.
:-)

Hee SirVladimir,
sounds like you are getting closer Huh

Yeah the anagram still blows my mind as well.

I have been trying lots of connections to the BIp39 list but still no luck..

Also have been thinking :
What if this is not really a Puzzle, just a "I dare yout to open my wallet" kind of thing.
I mean, who just gives away 1 BTC just for fun??
(except maybe "saatoshi_rising")

Anyway keep at it.
and if you do, please come ba ck to tell us how you did it.. :-)
cheers

I was thinking.. 8 words 32 char....
an average of 4 letter per word....
it reminds me of the BIP39 wordlist... where all words have 4 significant letters (some only 3)

Maybe the question refers to that list somehow...?
there are 8 words in the question (not counting "?", "21", ".txt" )

I'm trying some COMB-inations.. so far nothing ...
7  Economy / Games and rounds / Re: Ok, here's a 1BTC puzzle. on: June 29, 2019, 08:04:42 PM
...
and the .txt .. it has been suggested that this refers to the white paper.. I don't think so.
It could be but we do not have any other hints for that.
It could be the Duality paper. There it is said :  " Why 21 Million? The truth is, it was an educated guess"

TheTruthIs,ItWasAnEducatedGuess.  - 18BjpBsmfniFYJGK2jf1AH5yZG6rxTN7AA  (we need the "," and "." to make 32???)

Or maybe the ".txt" refers to the simple text (ASCII) format on computers...

TheAsciiCodesWillShowYouTheWayIn - 1LoUDbXF2Fhzu8JCDJv6rHMGAsoP1YbEZP   (9 words :-(  )
SatoshiNakamotoWillShowItInAscii  - 1C8ewS6ABYSS5yAj4DxqGRHyhzTjwYL8Qa   (only 7 words :-( )
ItIsSatoshiNakamotoButPutInAscii - 1DWqZ4svqmeY6cw7vvFK7bs6AKPWzmHNjD ..

(Python is working super,  finding solution not so much)

But Thanks anyway guys for the nice tool :-)

Hi Ligor
Thanks for the help. Now it finally works   :-)
Super...

As for jajorda23, yeah, i have been wondering about the 21.
Could be about the 21 million maximum Bitcoin, but also (as has been hinted before) to the 21 pages of "Bitcoin Duality".
(I saw you tried "Because it was an educated guess"  which comes from that paper I think ?)

Anyway, I was wondering who would create such an enigmatic Puzzle.
And than spend 1 Bitcoin on it... he/she must have plenty... ?

And looking at the sparse discussion between watashi-kokoto and blockladder.. I think they are quite knowledgable on Bitcoin.
(much more than I am...)  Thats is why I conclude that the brainwallet is probably not their method.
I feel more for the approach you guys have with this Python script. the letters directly standing for the Priv.key.

Anyway now we nee to find the right answer.
The biggest puzzles (sub-puzzles) for me are the "Comb"  and the ".txt".
I don't see the word Comb connected to anything in crypto.
Comb as in combing hair, but also maybe Honeycomb (but that has no teeth...)?

ToCombOutAllAltcoinHodlerTangles - 179ha7ZQcC6XrmZTH6ZcyXgkCBftiSPAnM

But what if the Privatekey is a "Compressed Key" ?
Can we do that in Python too ??

ToCombOutAllFakeSatoshiNakamotos - 182XEp5aA9vpKXpDsTWguRDGi6JctM2UWp  (i know, one word short)
ToFindTheRealSatoshiNakamotoInIt  -  13camJrNYHv4iQTYcBLSwLTCqzb6zd7Hty
WhyTheCombOfSatoshiNakamotoHas21 - 1NeDdpKXRPns6KGTiPWBH1CRMCQxzTkrCo
WhySatoshiNakamotoHas21TeethComb - 1LobBRjgjscDXuj7zKtLLMigWXSx4d25Ks
WhyTheTeethOfSatoshiNakamotoComb - 13WABj884G84FyYJYMazsw21NJfKW9em3i

Hi, thanks for your help.
I am quite new at Python
I was able to "pip" the Bitcoin tools.

But I tried the same with "electrum" and I got :

Collecting electrum
ERROR: Could not find a version that satisfies the requirement electrum (from versions: none)
ERROR: No matching distribution found for electrum

Hope you can tell me what I am doing wrong
Thanks

Thanks for the python script...
However I cannot do the imports somehow,..?
I get :

    from bitcointools import *
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'bitcointools'

Any help is appreciated?

(i tried this : TheCombOfWatashiKokotoHas21Teeth    and variations... no luck so far :-))

Thanks for your reactions, I read the whole discussion and I saw these remarks before.
But the whitepaper did not really get us anywhere so far, and even I would not know how to bruteforce that.
The Comb could be an abreviation, I think, but only "Might-be"  imo.
And the names not being english words, also a "Might-be"  imo.

I will keep trying but I think if this is a real Puzzle, and not a fake, we need some more hints.
Good luck all

HI,
I tried

NatashaOtomoskiIsSatoshiNakamoto
SatoshiNakamotoIsNatashaOtomoski

No luck.
I think we should convert each letter to its ascii and then create key directly from that .
so NatashaOtomoskiIsSatoshiNakamoto  becomes   5JQoiBW5eKd6gFvakcX2mJmCmKgJJsbRvDbVzcfeUaYqJGzDUXn
(as suggested in various previous post )
I don't think we need Brainwallet.

I think that there are a few important clues:
- the '.txt'  at the end is a clue I think but I don't know to what?? (I treid to save a file with that name but got : 'A file name can't contain any of the following characters: \ / : * ? < > |')
- The anagram NatashaOtomoski  suggests to me that the name SatoshiNakamoto  should be in the answer.
- the 21 which seems to point to the max number of bitcoins. Or what else Huh
- then there is the strange 'COMB'. I see no connection to Bitcoin there.  (unless you comb the knots out of  'NatashaOtomoski' to get 'SatoshiNakamoto')   ToGetOutSatoshiNakamotoInTheEnd
- and the curious start transaction to fill up https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/179sxfh6rw6bHSo5wVUhLP96k46QaEzVP. Should we check out the orig. adresses further ?
(if you look at the adresses.. you see quite a history of small tranactions.)

And it could also be that there is no solution (trolling ?? ).

Intriguing

Hi,
I misunderstood your security warning. Sorry.
sloppy reading on my part.
Anyway thanks for your help.
I recovered everything and reinitialized my nano s to a new Phrase.
Should be secure now.
Thanks again.

Hi,
It looks like I might get my coins back after all.
However I am not sure how to do what you just said.
i Found my "Account extended private key" on the website you mentioned.
But I do'nt know how to proceed from there (and I don't have an offline linux computer at my disposal)
Can you help me to find out how to proceed ?

Hi
I use a Ledger Nano-S wallet and I have the Restore frase. (not the private key)
But how to go about it ?

17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Wrong Transfer from BCH to BTC on: November 15, 2017, 11:37:43 AM
Hi,
I have a question,
By mistake I sent a few Bitcoin-cash BCH to an adress of my Bitcoin BTC account.
They never arrived of course :-(
But since I own the adress on the BTC chain, can I still claim that adress on the BCH chain and get my coins back ?
Thanks for any suggestions.
