1  Economy / Services / Re: NEW: Web Embedded Bitcoin Ticker on: July 25, 2011, 12:13:58 PM
Sorry, I'll check it out later today as soon as I can. Should be working again tonight.

EDIT: All fixed up, or at least it should be.

If you use my ticker, you've probably noticed that it hasn't been working since Mt. Gox died and recovered. Well, it's working again. =]

There are a couple bugs that I need to sort out, but it's at least updating once again. Thanks for your patience!
3  Economy / Services / Re: NEW: Web Embedded Bitcoin Ticker on: June 29, 2011, 01:55:38 PM
The people using this ticker may have realized that it hasn't been updating properly since MtGox went down and returned. I'm currently fixing this, so expect everything to work again in just a couple days.

I'll soon be moving domains and adding EUR support. Any other suggestions, let me know.
5  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Paying goods with BTCs in real (phisical) shops on: June 09, 2011, 12:15:21 PM
@ Haxxy: Why do you say that "The last thing bitcoins need is a physical transfer medium"? Don't you think that a device able to be brought with you can be very useful and helps increasing the spreading speed of the currency?

The ideal transfer medium is the smartphone. It has Bluetooth and web connectivity, allowing phone-to-phone or phone-to-PC transactions, as well as wallet encryption and automatic backup. Also, eliminating the physical card helps people psychologically feel and understand that bitcoins are a step forward. Besides, one would be much more inclined to adopt Bitcoin if all it takes is downloading an app, rather than ordering a card.

Maybe with BitBills, in the future

Definitely not. The last thing bitcoins need is a physical transfer medium. This is how I see it:

The cashier rings up your items. You point your phone at a QR code on the counter which contains a wallet address and the amount owed. Send the payment, you're done.

UPDATE: I will design a custom ticker for your website! It can be any size and include whatever information you would like. I'll even include your logo and design it however you'd like. You may pay me whatever you feel it is worth for you. Contact me if you're interested!
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Solution: How to shift the decimal on: June 08, 2011, 02:53:38 PM
I like this. Worst case is that people don't lose the 'u' in their notation, which isn't a big deal, really.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin transactions are scarily traceable... on: June 07, 2011, 03:28:25 PM
Well, sort of.

Any website which you provide your bitcoin address to can associate that with your IP address. Unless you're on Tor or something, isn't this a bit of a cause for concern?
10  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: how long to $100 ? $1000 ? on: June 03, 2011, 09:00:57 PM
But does that serve any real purpose?  If difficulty increases by 100x because of all the new miners does that help bitcoins as a unit of exchange?  All that equipment is basically wasting power to do arbitrary calculations that only have value because of an artificial currency.

Consider this: If mining becomes insanely difficult and a newbie is looking for a way to acquire bitcoins, he/she will purchase the coins instead of mine for them. So, we'll be seeing a lot more people buying bitcoins instead of mining equipment. This will cause an increase in bitcoin value.

Also, all the mining power is going into verifying the block chain, which prevents hacking.
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: PCIe x1 bandwidth ok? on: June 03, 2011, 08:35:32 PM
For that matter, would a standard PCI slot work for mining?  I can't recall if the card will downclock itself, or if the form factor will even match.

The form factor won't match, and I'm sure the slot even supplies a different amount of power or something.
12  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining on 40 computers on: June 03, 2011, 08:06:18 PM
If they were public computers, probably no. They could trace it to me though, through the key cards used to get into school. These computers, unfortunately, requires one to sign in on all of them.

So I suppose you'd crack the local admin password on each of the machines (which is remarkably simple) and set up the miner as an "all users" startup program. The only problem with that is that it's time consuming.

Just speculating, by the way. I love speculative hacking. =P

EDIT: Wait, you have to literally use a key card to sign into the computer? That's a bit odd, isn't it?
13  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining on 40 computers on: June 03, 2011, 05:43:01 PM
Hmm...

Is it even possible to be caught doing this? Suppose the computers in question are on public user accounts. If you simply set up the account and all of the software using the public computers, isn't it impossible for you to be traced unless someone physically witnesses you doing it? After all, even the bitcoin address is untraceable...
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: PCIe x1 bandwidth ok? on: June 02, 2011, 02:45:10 PM
Ok, I understand that. But can someone explain why mining requires only uses a few kB/s?

I would imagine it's because after being given the task, it doesn't need to talk to the rest of the computer much as long as it's calculating. Drawing graphics and such must require much more communication with the rest of the PC, sending and receiving tons of new information every second.
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Not able to mine consistently on my 4870x2 using any gpu miner. on: June 02, 2011, 02:39:43 PM
Try different drivers or a different SDK version. Simple, but who knows.
16  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Quick Crossfire mining question on: June 01, 2011, 08:39:21 PM
I don't recommend Crossfire; it significantly decreased my mining performance. It's not hard to get both cards to work separately, though. If your monitor has two input ports (many do), just plug the second card into the monitor's second port. If not, do this.

To answer your question, though, I'm pretty sure you still have to set up two workers, one for each device. Just try yourself and figure out what works.
17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: using extra pci slots? on: June 01, 2011, 08:36:09 PM
Haven't really heard anything about it, but if you were to "split" your PCI-E slot, you'd only have half the bandwidth going to each slot, right? It might provide only a very small increase, or maybe even decrease, in performance. I have only limited knowledge, though, so I may be wrong.

Also, this should be moved to the "Mining" subforum.
18  Economy / Services / Re: NEW: Web Embedded Bitcoin Ticker on: May 29, 2011, 03:33:03 AM
Hey, if you don't mind me asking...what exactly is the practical application of having an embeddable image of a custom currency amount?

What I mean is, if you just want to know a conversion rate, then there are nice web services for that. If you want to serve the point of this and embed the image, it isn't clear to whoever is viewing the image that you're converting, say, $100 USD into BTC, because the image doesn't specify the amount in itself. To the viewer, it's just an arbitrary number pulled from nowhere, right?

I'm not challenging the usefulness of the app, but I'm just wondering what people will be using it for, since it was requested and all.
19  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: GUI mining - now with BFI_INT optimization on: May 25, 2011, 03:51:55 PM
I found a bug.

I have an ATI card and an nVidia card in the same computer. GUIMiner only looks at the set of devices from platform 0, but with two such cards, the platform also needs to be specified. In my case, the ATI card is under --platform 0, and the nVidia card is --platform 1. So, GUIMiner should support both platform and device selection. Those with only one platform would not worry about this, but those with two or more platforms would not have trouble.

I should also point out that with more than one platform installed, GUIMiner refuses to work at all, so I'm using poclbm on its own.
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: google is going to help :) on: May 25, 2011, 03:41:37 PM
I don't see how this really has much to do with Bitcoin. It simply enables people to make payments with smartphones instead of credit cards. Bitcoin is a totally different concept.
