1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Which trading platform and why? on: July 29, 2013, 06:55:54 PM
I like Cryptsy and mcxNOW, they seem to be the most stable for altcoins.

There's also a new one called crypto-trade (see sig for link) which looks really promising, but I haven't really used it properly yet.

K.

I was looking at this one earlier... i really like the layout.
I already use cryptsy and BTC-e, I was just wondering if there are ANY benefits to using one over the other.

I had to use mtgox to get money from US bank into BTC, then transferred BTC to BTC-e... lost alot because of the price difference.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Which trading platform and why? on: July 29, 2013, 01:46:27 PM
So, there seems to be alot of different trading platforms out there for Altcoins, an I just wanted to get some opinions from everyone about which ones are the best and why.
What makes one trading platform better than another?
Why do prices vary from platform to platform?
Do you use multiple ones and transfer coins between them to make profits?

Thanks

Very strange...

I do
./run-primecoind
then

So i try forceing it to start with

I get
Error: Failed to read block
Error: Failed to Connect best block

any ideas?

It was working before i restarted...

anyone know how to make this connect to a mining pool?

Would that be something in the primecoin.conf ?

No mining pools yet.

What about ypool?

They seem a little bit dodgy to me and many others plus in order to mine you have to use software created by them.

which is why I am asking for directions on connecting the primecoin-qt client to a pool....

Anyone know how?

so if I just replace the primecoin-qt.exe and the daemon on this windows machine, what will happen with the coins that are already on this machine? Or is it best to send these coins to another account before installing this release on this machine?

We need good Wiki or a FAQ. Same questions been asked over and over again, and you can't point people anywhere.

Your coins are tied to your private key(s), which is in wallet.dat file. That file is located in totally separate directory from your Primecoin client, and any re-installation has no effect on it.

on a windows machine, where is this wallet.dat file stored? Im not finding it.

How do i replace the ancient version with the new one, without delete/recreate my droplet? And keeping the same wallet

I replace it.  Here, lete me help you out some on linux.  I move the old files out and then create a new section.

Quote
primecoind stop
cd ~
mv primecoin old4
git clone https://github.com/mikaelh2/primecoin

cd ~/primecoin/src
make -f makefile.unix USE_UPNP=-
mkdir ~/.primecoin
echo "rpcuser=miner2
rpcpassword=test2
gen=1" > ~/.primecoin/primecoin.conf
sudo mv primecoind /usr/local/bin/.

primecoind --daemon

You need to do "mingw-get install mingw32-gmp" before compiling, else you get this error message:

Code:
In file included from main.cpp:16:0:
prime.h:10:17: fatal error: gmp.h: No such file or directory
compilation terminated.
make: *** [obj/mail.o] Error 1

I cannot get mingw installed.... mingw-get is not a valid command.
downloaded the tar.zx, unpacked, but the make -f Makefile doesnt seem to do anything.
cant figure this out, been googling all day

is anyone else getting compiler errors with the mikaelh2 build?
Code:

compilation terminated.
make: *** [obj/mail.o] Error 1

Does anyone use Chemisist's rebuild?
Quote
I've git cloned it and recompiled it on the smallest droplet (512MB 1 core) an hour ago. Didn't even had to re-size it to more memory, temporarily creating and destroying swap file for compilation, compiled while still mining.

Excellent results, it's doubled pps to previous version. It varies 250-350 pps. Recommended.

Same. Getting 300-450pps

I get this error.

Code:
In file included from main.cpp:16:0:
prime.h: In constructor ‘CSieveOfEratosthenes::CSieveOfEratosthenes(unsigned int, unsigned int, uint256, CBigNum&)’:
prime.h:109:6: error: ‘prevWeaveTime’ was not declared in this scope
prime.h:110:3: error: ‘prevTotalTime’ was not declared in this scope
make: *** [obj/main.o] Error 1

Chemisist just made some changes to the prime.h file to add those declarations or remove them.

Just do the following and recompile:
git reset --hard HEAD
git pull
then make -f etc.....

So, i have a question about primecoin mining, how exactly does each block gets mined.

Are basically all blocks open until they are solved? In other words, if my miner finds a block and is working on that block to solve it, then can Joe Blow's miner finds that same block and solve it quicker and earn the coins? Or do i have a flawed understanding of a "block"?

What Im getting at, is it better (not taking electricity into consideration) to have a bunch of separate slower pps computers (or miner instances) or one beast computer (one mining instance) with the same combined pps as all of he smaller ones?

I would think, that if a little luck is involved in finding blocks, then the more instances, the higher your probability of "finding" a block right?

Thanks, I'm a little bit of a mining noob, just trying to learn the terminology and technology better.

Thanks,

Your question is a bit offtopic in this thread, but I'll try to answer to it.

You can find a block at the same time, or slightly after someone else, but you won't get rewards, blocks are mined and the whole network knows it has been mined thanks to the proof of work algorithm which makes sure all the network is synced, since it takes certain amount of work to figure out the correct prime number chain for each block. Thus no miner can get ahead of the whole network unless it surpasses its power by 51%+.

Sorry for the off-topic question, but thanks for your prompt answer. I get it now... So if everyone is working on the same block at any given time, would'nt it be better to have a more powerful pps machine than a bunch of smaller instances?

17  Other / Beginners & Help / how to install bitcoin-qt in different directory (debian - linux)? on: July 09, 2013, 06:45:38 PM
Hello,

I am trying to setup an Armory bitcoin wallet on the persistent drive of a Tails bootable USB stick and am having a little trouble installing bitcoin-qt. For one, i keep running out of hard drive space, but I have a 16GB persistent partition, so i have a feeling that the place where .bitcoin is located is not in that persistent portion. So, is there a way to update the blockchain using bitcoin-qt and making that blockchain download to the persistent dir instead of the home dir?

Tais is based on the debian distro of linux. i know there is a way to do this in windows, but I havent found any instructions for how to do this in linux.

Thanks,
