1  Other / Beginners & Help / zeroing out 'spare change' on Binance on: January 16, 2018, 09:27:21 PM
I've used Binance to do exchanges for a couple alt coins. In converting these alt coins back to a more established coin (BTC, ETH) I am winding up with small fractions of the alt coin left on the exchange. Literally just a couple dollars. Is there a way to completely zero that out? Is there a danger in it being left on the exchange?
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Trying to understand Lightning Bitcoin on: January 10, 2018, 04:58:11 PM
I understand that it is meant to address the scaleability issues with Bitcoin, but not clear on how it functions I guess. I've read articles that this will result in, or has already resulted in a hard fork of the Bitcoin blockchain. Some articles I read say this occurred at 499,999 or something which occurred sometime in December. Was a new coin created at this time? If not, why not?
3  Other / Beginners & Help / Wallets and changing devices question on: January 05, 2018, 06:11:13 AM
How does one handle their wallets when the need arises to change devices (i.e. time for a new PC)? Do you do a wallet restore on the new PC?
4  Other / Beginners & Help / What is the purpose of a coin? on: January 04, 2018, 07:37:43 PM
I'm getting to a point where I'm understanding the technology and applications behind a lot of the coins, but it begs the question for me, what is the purpose of the coin? Other than actual Bitcoin, which is slowly gaining some utility as an actual currency, why do coins for the thousands of other alt coins exist? What do they represent? They have essentially no utility as a currency. I'd say it's equatable to a stock, but I don't think that's right either. In a stock the stock is initially offered by the issuing company to raise capital and is later traded among others. That doesn't seem to be how crypto currencies work. The whole point is there is no bitcoin company or ethereum company, etc. Is it just a waiting game in hopes that a few eventually become widely accepted as currency?
5  Other / Beginners & Help / cointracking.com questions on: January 03, 2018, 03:01:46 AM
I'm trying to use cointracking.com as I understand one needs to keep pretty detailed records now for tax purposes. My problem is in. Crypto assets I purchase with USD I do on coinbase. Some of the crypto goes straight to my exodus wallet, and some transfer to Binance to purchase other assets.

So what exactly should I upload to cointracking? It seems like if I do everything cointracking makes it look like I have way more than I do?

Should purchases of crypto assets with USD on coinbase be imported to cointracking for tax purposes?

Thanks for any help.
6  Other / Beginners & Help / where to keep bitcoins and coinbase questions on: December 07, 2017, 08:17:42 PM
I recently purchased some bitcoin at coinbase.com. The transaction will not be complete for another couple days however. I also decided to go with the Copay wallet which is linked to my coinbase account. Will my bitcoin purchase automatically go into the Copay wallet? Do I really even need a wallet if I don't plan on transferring bitcoin to anyone or buying anything?

Okay. So i went with the Copay wallet, linked it to coinbase to buy BTC and bought some BTC. Gonna take a few days it looks like, but next question is it supposed to automatically show up in the Copay wallet when it gets confirmed?

In most wallets it will show up even if it is unconfirmed. ( As unconfirmed ofcourse Roll Eyes) What exactly did you do in coinbase? You used the copay receiving adress as withdraw adress?

If that's the case, everything should be fine. If you want to check if you actually received anything on your CoPay adress, you should/could use a 3rd party such as https://blockchain.info, if you think copay is bugging/not working.

Downloaded Copay wallet on to my PC then linked it to Coinbase. Purchased BTC through Coinbase website which said the transaction will arrive in 7 days. Transaction shows in my account as going to my wallet, but I didn't get the coinbase wallet. I got the Copay one. So I guess the question is where are the Bitcoins really gonna go?

I've just started learning about crypto currencies and need a little help with wallets. Read the wallet general info section on here and helped with a lot, but still have questions. Initially getting into this I got steered toward bitcoin.com. I download their wallet on both my PC and smartphone, but reading more, i don't think I want to use them and will try one of the others recommended in the general info thread. I have not purchased any bitcoins yet. Do I just delete the bitcoin wallet and it's gone and don't have to worry about? Or does the wallet still exist for people to send money to even if I delete the program to access them?

If you just used them for testing and checking purposes, without any balance at all, and don't want to used it anymore then it's fine if you will get rid of them and use another wallet instead. Just remember that don't used all associated address there and it was an obvious thing to do.

Anyways what is that "recommended" wallet in the general information you have read?

Was looking at Copay. I want something that would treated similar to a normal bank account where I can access the same info from multiple devices (smartphone, PC), but maybe you it can't be thought of that way.

Well, yes, the wallet itself ( adresses + private keys ) will still exist, and if people have the right adress, they can still send money to it. ( which will then ofcourse be lost if there's no private key associated/known anymore.)

My question is, why do you worry about it?

Using another wallet would simply mean that you will get a different set of private keys + adresses, ( unless you import your old wallet).

Which shouldn't be an issue if I haven't made any transactions right?
