Hi there. I just got that same email as well. I was looking for an official post here about what happened, but could not find one. I am pretty sure the email is legit, there doesn't appear to be any phishing URLs or anything suspect in the body.

Edit: Nevermind, looks confirmed legit. Smiley
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: "Silver to bitcoin's gold" on: September 11, 2013, 06:58:42 AM

In the long run, it will be which name(s) best catches the attention of the consumer. Then once it gets embedded into the mass stream of consciousness it/they will dominate long-term. I'm betting on Gold.

This isn't true at all, actually. It's like the HD-DVD vs Blu-ray debate several years back -- Blu-ray was the superior format...but a ton of money was backing HD-DVD and they were betting on the fact that consumers would prefer it due to the fact that the name makes more sense to them. Everybody knew what DVDs were...and everybody knew what HD was. This, of course, was not the case.

Also HD-DVD was basically just a distraction that Microsoft and Toshiba threw money at without any real intention of supporting. They knew it was DoA.

Yeah just leave it in the wallet.
hello all friends of cute pink piggies!
I read instructions on http://andarazoroflove.org/cryptocurrency/pennies/ but maybe I overlooked it, what are POS conditions? I am holding the coins in my piggybank (in windows Qt application) but I still have the same amount of pennies. How long do I need to save my pennies to get some proof of stake?
About 2 weeks. See: fortnight Wink

Shakezula,

ETA on new client?

Sad to see all the miners flee because of the massive PoS issue... noone wants to mine cuz they dont have any return compared to the ppl just relying on the massive PoS issue.

Price is stabalizing on Cryptsy but not where it should be yet since the PoS dumpers are flooding to cash in on the free coins.

When will this be fixed?

I haven't decided quite yet what to do with this. I kind of like that they aren't as valuable as assumed and I did mention they were "savings encouraged" and that stake was experimental. I don't like the idea of a hard fork, and there are a lot of other coins with huge caps--one simply values them at the size of markets' share.

This also means that they are more accessible to all (yea, my "hippie" ideas coming in to play here again) at a lower value and that anyone can buy a few, hold them and they will potentially multiply. I understand the desire for people to get back their "investment" in CPU time, but those are likely the same people who have amassed a huge hoard of pennies now as some compensation. Eh, hard.

Again, I haven't ruled just how I am going to deal with this, but for now, please accept them for what they are. If that means you don't accept them, that's fine too, dump your stash and move on to the next flavor-of-the-week coin, I understand and won't hold it against you. I will not abandon pennies and I am working on a couple more things for Pennies, including inexpensive physical penny coins--more information will be available on my website.
I vote for keeping it as is. They should be worth 0.00010000 BTC at the very most at any time, IMHO.
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: WHY are there so many COINs? on: September 07, 2013, 12:21:30 AM
You could say the same things about Bitcoin.

Personally, I cloned a coin so that I could learn more about cryptography, C++, linux, and networking.
I cannot speak for everyone else, but that is my reason for you.

edit:
I still accept bitcoin, but I choose to mine my personal favorite coin.
It's really up to you which one you'd like to mine. There are a lot of choices out there, so one is likely to appeal to you.
5  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: ** BITVEGAS HACKED ** on: September 06, 2013, 11:24:36 PM
I can confirm that this happened. Somebody was logged into my account, and appeared to log into others' accounts too.
6  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: UPDATE: Play as a guest WITHOUT owning Minecraft! BitVegas Minecraft - Free BTC on: September 06, 2013, 11:03:53 PM
I would advise everyone to avoid this server.
My account was hacked today, along with everyone else online.
It appears that the hacker took all money, along with passwords possibly.
I'd would also advise anyone who has every used this server to change their passwords.
7  Economy / Goods / Re: grocery? on: September 06, 2013, 05:02:57 PM
My wife and I are considering selling meat and eggs (among other things) for crypto currency in the near future, but that all depends on if we are able to get a larger space for livestock/planting, and if crypto currencies are a little more stable and reliable.
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] [cD] [cryptoDOLLAR]☺ US-dollar supported coin on: September 05, 2013, 12:11:49 AM

Is this coin endorsed by Jayzis? I don't think he would want anything to do with this.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Just noticed a new coin on cryptocointalk instacoin on: August 28, 2013, 08:52:03 PM
Are you kidding me? It's obviously not just a pump-and-dump coin.
It's so innovative and different from all the others.

Interesting experiment imo, always wanted to know what happens to a coin when all coins are mined.
I've been interested. Do you know of any coins that have been fully mined yet? I couldn't find any.

They should have called it instasarcasm

Anyone want to exchange 100 physical pennies for 100 virtual pennies?
I checked all of them over, and about 50% of them are shiny/uncirculated, and the rest are a little dull.
I'll cover shipping fees! (inside the US)

If you'll send them to Idaho, I'll exchange with you!
PM me your address, I'll ship asap.  Grin

Nope, can't cash out and pay the power bill with the coins, not worth mining. No one cares about it anymore nothing can save it.
Everyone back to Bitcoin!
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] [OBC] Obamacoin, strongest coin in the world on: August 26, 2013, 06:53:46 AM
Best coin name ever.

1. Can we pay for ObamaCare with this?
2. When can we expect RomneyBucks?
3. Ron Paul would be disappointed in you.
14  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: [ANN] [UBERCOIN] Working on a new coin. Will update this thread when completed. on: August 15, 2013, 06:57:12 PM
I didn't mean to imply that cunningham chains have real world value, just that they have more "value" than pure sha/scrypt hashing.  Primecoin was first to the market with a "it's better than nothing," "scientific," PoW.  As a result its popularity growth has been unrivaled by any coin ever, with a value to match its popularity (there's been 25k xpm dumped on mcxNOW the past 14 hours and the price moved from .008 to .0077).

My point is that moving in the direction of real world utility (something more than just a vehicle for value transport) is clearly the direction the market wants to see next gen coins take.

Unrelated but something to consider:  One could reasonably argue that the BTC mining hardware arms race has done a phenomenal amount of the heavy lifting in terms of attracting fiat investment.  Effectively incentivizing movement INTO the Bitcoin economy.  Thus spurring widespread adoption of BTC as a currency.

Just consider that when you move to discourage incentives that make a person want to mine more.

Edit:
Also an option for Windows users to choose the location of the install would be nice  Cool  Blockchain on my ssd makes me Sad
I know it's probably been discussed many times in other threads (most of what we're talking about has) but still the idea of using all that sha256/scrypt/jane power for something more productive is really appealing.

I don't think you should bother (at release) with doing something vastly different (i.e. XPM, Curecoin, Seticoin) but stick with the existing widely used methods so far.

If there is a way to convert the results of the hashing power into something else in the future, then by all means, patch it in.

This would probably fall under the 'ease of use' section, but if newbies are to adopt this, especially as an improvement to the original formula, it would be good to include things like a sample .conf file and some instructions on how to run it in a Readme file.

Additionally, I'm sure there are more UI and UX improvements that can be patched over time that will enhance ease of use, but I can't think of any right now with the exception of revamping the entire UI. Maybe the Mining tab could be made a little easier, i.e. one button to start/stop (toggle) mining.
An auto-detect IP/port would be nice.
Possibly a one-time start-up toast that asks if you want to import a wallet; if Yes, open a file browser, select a wallet.dat file, copy it to the appropriate location on the OS.

well, we need to do something about the blockchain size.... too much to download for some people with slow/bad/expensive internet :-(

Added to OP.

So far we are on a roll anything else that would be useful to crypto to decentralize or make it easier?
Put a clause in that states that it is not currency and the government cannot regulate it. [/sarcasm]
17  Other / Off-topic / Re: Why MP is your God. on: August 12, 2013, 03:44:09 AM
Interesting theory, but BTC will cap out at about $120,000.00 USD 20 years from now, at which point you should all stop buying it.
It's fine, all the credit I need is for you to call me your god at that point.
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Global Currency Day, 3 January 2014 on: August 12, 2013, 03:20:29 AM
Why not have a week long (technically 9 day, but whatever) holiday from the 3rd to the 12th?
It will give people a better chance to conduct meet-ups/markets in public (and online) as well to trade BTC/LTC/altcoins.

My 19 orphans are crying. May their tears will fuel the copper miners. :p

Seems to me updating fine now for me, but...I think I lost those initial coins mined. Sad
I'm not sure how many there were because I don't see them in pending/transaction history.
From the screenshot I posted, it looked like I mined 3 blocks? I don't know if the 18 transactions means anything (newbie me is sort of new to this).
Anyway, thanks for troubleshooting help, everyone.

edit: derp, listtransactions shows them all as orphans :/
