5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Proposal: Bitcoin Conference San Francisco - March 3rd-4th 2012 on: February 18, 2012, 08:13:41 AM
I might be able to make this actually.

Any ideas where it would be held? Who would be speaking? What can we expect out of the conference?

Berlin!

You say that we should pursue educating OWS participants at a, "more opportune time." Could you specify what is a more opportune time than this?

And yes, it might take more time getting a foot soldier on Wall St setup with Bitcoin than it would just handing them some cash. However, after that person has invested a bit of their precious time in learning about Bitcoin they will come back to Bitcoins as an idea and actually do some more research. Nobody is advocating that we go down there and explain cryptography and what a nonce is. You say, "Hey, you want to earn some money for micro blogging? Great, we have just the thing for you."

Personally, I have spent countless hours standing in farmers markets with a table and a sign-up sheet giving a short pitch about what I'm all about to pique a passerby's interest. Some will just walk on by, but in a day we talk to hundreds of people and get them on board with the campaign.

Just being armchair economists is not going to raise awareness of Bitcoin. The people out their are clamoring for solutions to the problem of too big to fail banks and Bitcoin is a solution to that problem.

I think that it will ultimately be more effective for Bitcoin generally if it is clearly known that some funding was made possible through Bitcoin, but actively pushing it is fairly low-key.

I disagree. You know what they say, "never waste a crisis." And right now we need to be more vocal than ever. Get people into the Bitcoin system. Besides, those people on Wall St. are going to be there for a while, hopefully. Like the OP said, a lot of people are coming and going to start occupations in their own cities. Wouldn't it be great if they went back to other states with the message of Bitcoin?

Let's get out there people! I've done petitioning before and you always want people to make a small investment in the system before they walk away, be it signing something or donating a dollar.

Why do you think you receive nickels in the mail? Statistically speaking, people are more likely to get involved if they feel they have received something of value. So giving out Bitcoins in return for a tweet is frigging genius!

My mom had $4000 stolen from her bank account because of PayPal. It's a shitty company.

I even had my account frozen multiple times by buying stuff from eBay.

I'm percymate. I mine coins. Sort of libertarian leaning.

Bitcoins are friction awesome and I'm in it for the long haul.
11  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Thoughts on a bitcoin alternative backed by gold? on: October 08, 2011, 08:36:52 AM
It could always open up the possibility for someone to take the gold away and pretend it's there. I wouldn't trust that system at all.

Besides, just look at the Liberty Dollar. Feds moved in and took it down. Gold reserves make an excellent target for the Feds.
12  Other / Beginners & Help / Can I Use My GPU for Video Games? on: October 08, 2011, 08:32:06 AM
So I have an XFX Black Edition 5970 which won't run OpenCL on one core. It always gives me a Verification Failed, Check Hardware error. Even with different drivers it fails to work. I'm thinking about putting into a gaming machine for Battlefield BC2.

Does anyone know if I can run normal games on it? Or is there any way to check if the core has gone bad, or to check if DirectX or OpenGL will run on it?
13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Is a 5770 vga of gigabyte different from the same one from msi or powercolor ? on: October 08, 2011, 08:28:44 AM
I have one 5770 running, and a whole lot of 5970's  Wink.

I have EVGA 5770 but I have dealt with the PowerColor brand before and all I have to say is to STEER CLEAR! PowerColor is absolute garbage. I had to return a 5970 because one core refuse to even run OpenCL.

I'm pushing about 200Mhash/s on the 5770. But I think they're mostly identical in terms of their cores.

Funny, you say don't download links on the forum and you post a link.

Just get GPG and encrypt your wallet and back it up. That way, even if someone gets your wallet, they won't be able to use it.
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: HOWTO: create a 100% secure wallet on: June 25, 2011, 02:47:41 AM
Just use GPG encrypt wallet.dat on wallet's that you are not using.
16  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Has the ship sailed on mining profitability? on: June 25, 2011, 02:46:54 AM
If you have free equipment lying around, then yes, it would still be profitable. Unfortunately, jumping into the game now could spell disaster for people trying to make a quick buck.
17  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Introduce yourself :) on: June 25, 2011, 02:41:24 AM
I'm percymate.
I'm a miner and a programmer. I sell BitCoin's and have an above average knowledge of economics.

BitCoin is a very promising open source project. I want to do anything i can to ensure the long term stability of this great initiative.
18  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 Mining Guide / HOWTO on: June 08, 2011, 07:04:16 PM
The guide works great for me. However, when I try to add a 5970 to my motherboard, X will never start.

I just get a blank screen that is on, but nothing there. I usually get a cursor on the screen, but it's nowhere to be found.

Any ideas?
