In my opinion, an important point to look at before buying, is the actual use of a cryptocurrency as well as its community.

The most obvious way is to put some of your BTC in an altcoin that will take a lot of value in bitcoin = more BTC in your portfolio
 

I guess poloniex and livecoin.net are a good choice to start, since with these two exchanges you will have a large selection of crypto to trade.
