1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: Execoin: | First Open-Source Stealth Wallet Released! | Fast | ASIC-proof on: August 10, 2014, 03:13:18 PM
We updated ExecoinJ Java library, SPV clients (Exelite, Android and Electrum) will be updated later.

Just wanted to check in here. Couple of days ago, things looked like they were running smoothly with ExecoinJ. My block height closely matched the block explorers for ExecoinJ. Since then though, it looks like I am out of sync again. My block height is not 328,200, where I see the block explorers being only at 313,160. I'm going to presume that I've hooked into a couple of bad nodes again.

I notice that there is an additional new checkpoint in the execoin src that is not in the ExecoinJ src (actually, there are a few differences in the checkpoints src code). Not sure that matters because it looks like the code actually looks for a checkpoints file instead of using the pre-programmed checkpoints. But the checkpoints file for ExecoinJ hasn't been updated for 16 days. Can you post a new one?

Thanks!

Thanks for testing!!!

>I notice that ExecoinJ does not seem to have the logic implemented to calculate the reward of a block (GetBlockValue).
True!
>Is that necessary or does the standard getBlockInflation() in ExecoinJ work?
getBlockInflation() is enough.
Please upgrade with jar rebuilt from ExecoinJ, wipe the chain and resync.
New version of ExecoinJ shouldn't go that far (323,000 or so), difficulty retarget algo (DGW) parameters have been changed and new version shouldn't accept blocks from nodes that haven't been upgraded. New version may stuck on higher block earlier received from old nodes, but it could not advance and download/accept blocks from old nodes. The same applies to any client.

Great. I wiped the chain and resync'd, still got up to 323093. I see on http[Suspicious link removed]coin.net that the highest block is 307924. I'm going to wait for a bit to retest. I may be just connecting to a bad node. For the record, I am currently playing around with WalletTemplate. It's taken quite a bit of work to just get going on it, so I'm not counting out an error with my own shenanigans. Will keep you posted.

ExecoinJ has been updated, would appreciate if you try it and give a feedback!

Cool, thanks for the update. I notice that ExecoinJ does not seem to have the logic implemented to calculate the reward of a block (GetBlockValue). Is that necessary or does the standard getBlockInflation() in ExecoinJ work?

Looks like I will have to wipe my chain and resync. Just re-running put me at 323,000 or so. I'm retesting now!

Thanks again.

Thanks for the update. A couple of question:

  • Will the restart happen at 307770
  • Will you also be updating the SPV code (ExecoinJ)? I've been experimenting with it and get up to 307769, and then a bunch of non-connecting block errors.

Thanks again!
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: MuCoWa - A MultiCoinWallet to your service - Update now: 1.3.0 Quark added on: March 06, 2014, 09:01:55 AM
Interesting, though I'm not interested in paying a that kind of a fee to use it, or to use an app that is a closed source derivative of an open-source project. As clearly stated on the web site, MultiBit and BitcoinJ were used to create this. Although the resulting JAR is obfuscated, simple string searching reveals that indeed MultiBit and BitcoinJ are the sources used. Unfortunately, where MultiBit and BitcoinJ have a few hundred .java files, there are about 10,000 .java files for MuCoWa, so refactoring back to the original source is more difficult.

But, it looks like the original Apache and MultiBit licenses have not been included as part of the package, which I believe is a stipulation of the original works.

My suggestions:
  • Make the open source pieces used open source again.
  • Put those licenses back into the project.
  • Re-evaluate your fee structure.
  • Provide more details into your contact information and who you are, in order to build trust in you as a developer.
  • Add some screenshots to your web site so people can see what they are getting.

Looks like my second block solved today will be orphaned. Having a tough time trusting the network here. I solved the block 3-4 hours ago, and another block has just recently been solved in its place. If the network can't sync a single transaction in hours timeframe, it doesn't look good.

Okay, so I've done a little more mining with Bytecoin, to see if adding more nodes has helped. I was able to mine two blocks. The first block is showing up in CryptoCoinExplorer, and it shows up as having 2 confirmations, so I am assuming that it is fairly permanent.

The second block on the other hand, doesn't show up yet on CryptoCoinExplorer. I am wondering if it is in the network at all or just on my local box. Is there a way to resubmit a solution to a block that has not been orphaned yet?

Thanks Ahmed_bodi and Digigami,

That makes a bit more sense. I guess the overall network is a bit fragmented with very few nodes available, hence the gaps. How is this affecting the difficulty though. My miner (bfgminer) says that the network has over 200 GH/s rate, but when I look at CoinChoose, the hash rate is listed as only ~9 GH/s. How often are blocks supposed to be generated? Bitcoin is supposed to be about every 10 minutes, correct? If Bytecoin is supposed to be 1:1 to bitcoin, then the difficulty seems too high because blocks are not being solved for hours (last I checked).

I understand that merged mining should help, because that would allow more people to mine while mining Bitcoin. But are there any stats on how many people merge mine or what the merge mine hash rate is? The only pool I know (besides P2Pool merge mining) that does merged mining is Bitparking, and their hash rate is only 9k GH/s.

Thanks again.

I thought I'd give solo mining a try with this coin. After about 1/2 a day, I was super pleased to have found a block! Awesome.

The bad news is that just a few hours later, the block I found was ORPHANED.  Angry Angry Cry It's not like the same block was solved simultaneously as mine, it was hours later.

So I'm pretty pissed at that and just about ready to drop Bytecoin. It's hard to have faith in the coin when basic things like this happen.
10  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [12000 GH/s] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + UserDiff; ASIC tested on: August 03, 2013, 07:02:59 PM
 Angry

I'm still seeing a reduced reward for 19421 (249905). I was actively watching it and about 1-2 hours before the block was solved, I saw my estimated reward drop from 0.003xxxx to 0. Then it slowly built up little by little, to  0.0015xxxx, bur never recovered. This really sucks because the round lasted over 7 hours.

Unfortunately, I've decided to stop mining there for the time being until the issue can be confirmed as fixed.

11  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: ADHD and bitcoin on: August 03, 2013, 07:46:58 AM
I definitely had to read this one. Since I got started with bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies recently, it's been TOUGH to concentrate on anything else. I'm constantly looking at exchanges, currency rates, evaluating pools, trying to get things to compile, and more.

They say that one of the symptoms of ADHD is that you have periods of intense focus that events things out with your periods of complete lack of focus. Who knows. I've never been diagnosed, but sometimes I really feel like I have it.

Something that really has helped me out in my quest for more information is to bookmark and categorize the pages that are useful to me. I can then go back and look at the categories to see where I've done my research. For example, my categories are as follows:

  • Currencies (the primary sites of each currency, helpful links for each one)
  • Bitcoin
  • Mining Pools
  • Litecoin
  • Mining Pools
  • Namecoin
  • Mining Pools
  • PPCoin
  • Mining Pools
  • etc.
  • Exchanges (Links to MtGox, BTCe, etc.)
  • Market Tracking (Coinchoose, Profitability Calculators, etc.)
  • Mining
  • Mining Software and Documentation
  • P2Pool
  • Pool Software
  • Hardware (HW Comparisons, ASIC manufacturers, etc)
  • Contracts (Places that sell mining contracts)
  • Community (Sites like this)
  • Development (Mostly GitHub links to the various Currency wallets, Multibit, P2Pool, Stratum Proxy, etc.)
  • Other
  • Ripple
[/list]

I find that as I continue to organize what I find, that I start to get a picture of what's going on in the community, see patterns between different technologies, and learn more easily. Then I peel away another layer of the onion and find that I have to learn even more!

I hope that helps.
