You can send your coins from your non-hardware wallet into your hardware wallet's address, the fees should be the same as another bitcoin transaction out there Smiley

I never realised there is always a transaction fee. I thought it only apply when there is a exchange or a market place involved. But make sense - someone has to pay for coin miners.

Does that mean no one can steal from my web or whatever wallet until they dont have the private key? Sorry if it sounds like a dumb question.

Also do I have to enter my private key everytime I transfer out from my wallet - almost like a password?

Hi.. Noob here too.

I think chances of alt coin bypassing BTC is low, however it will only take a stream of bad press/mis-haps for it to happen. Similar to way no one predicted BTC will cost USD16.5K in 2017, no one can predict others too.

My policy is to cover all my grounds and spread invest. I will loose money on some, hopefully gain more on others to cover losses.

1. Use exchanges for trading and not for storing your coins.
2. Invest in a hardware wallet (Trezor, Ledger nano S). It's worth it, you will sleep better at night.
3. There is no such a thing as a BTC generator or a bitcoin doubler, don't invest in these scams.
4. Don't use services (exchanges, mixers etc.) that you can't find anything about them online.
5. Always use an escrow If you're dealing with individuals.

In the absence of a hardware wallet as it may take me few days to buy one, what is a good digital wallet to use. Also any that I store in my Mac/PC rather than online?

Also Can I easily transfer funds from digital to hardware wallet and are there any fees (I feel latter is a dumb question, but just checking!)
6  Economy / Economics / Re: BTC as a national currency? on: December 14, 2017, 10:39:37 AM
Very much doubt it will happen unless its in a 'extra terrestrial' country. Every country wants to regulate its money and thats the major difference between fiat and crypto (most at least).

There is no regulation and its on a limited supply. Also current price fluctuations wont help as if you go to shop to buy something with BTC and if price dropped you have to go source more (there is no predictability). Also sellers view they sell you something for a BTC and the price fluctuate in thousands, especially down he will go bankrupt.

Hope the GOVs wont add a lot of regulation around crypto, it will only make dark sites thrive.

Hi guys, I have been doing a lot of reading and think I should invest in some cryptocurrencies to protect my fiat becoming completely devalued in future. I am a newbie and an average bloke with not a lot of spare dosh to waste/play around.

When I read a lot of thread about safe keeping they are pretty old threads dating back to 2013 etc and very difficult to filter whats relevant for today.

My question is in December, 2017 what do you need to do to keep your bitcoin & altcoin wallets safe and also to protect yourself from being scammed/identity misused.

I hope we can make this a guide to any other newbies like me and keep it up to date.

Thanks
WJ
8  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Start with Bitcoin or Ethereum on: December 14, 2017, 01:46:49 AM
Although ethereum is widely used, not as much as bitcoin and there are tons of exchanges to buy bitcoin compared to etc & others. So BTC will be widely available.

Anyone know of alternative or ethereal based localbitcoin.com type but very reliable sites?

Care to share your findings?

I am a newbie and look at ways of maximising my reach/investments. Airdrops seems a good way to get the initial coin stack. Although quite time consuming.
10  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Stabilizing At $20K on: December 14, 2017, 01:14:45 AM
There is a lot of hype at the moment and since beginning of December it seems everyone want to buy a bit coin which push the price sky high. Not just that it's also good for other crypto currencies prices which has rocketed due to this demand.

I think almost until there is another distraction in the market the prices will go up. Only crystal ball can predict when it will settle and at  20K or 25K or 50K.
11  Economy / Speculation / Re: bitcoin now slowly drop should i sell? on: December 14, 2017, 01:05:53 AM
There will not be stopping for a while, so no point in selling at the moment. The price will always fluctuate in hundreds, but time to dump will be when there is lot of bad stories in news and people start dumping their money.
12  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Taxes Mining Bitcoins on: December 14, 2017, 12:55:09 AM
In the UK if you are mining bitcoins then HMRC regards this as a trade and will charge any profits to income tax and national insurance, so presume similar will apply. They are starting to clamp down too.
