1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Script coin mining on: August 28, 2013, 02:04:10 AM
We're talking KH/s. Just from my own experience:

Intel Core i3 @ 3.2GHz gets me around 28 kH/s
AMD A8 5600K @ 3.6GHz (technically it's an APU, not a CPU) gets around 36 to 38 kH/s.

As you can see, it's not a lot, but there are more powerful CPUs available. CPU mining is only profitable for alt-coins, and even then, you'd most likely be better off with a GPU.

I still mine some alt-coins with CPUs because I already I have the CPUs, but I wouldn't buy a CPU just for this.

This is not good, my i7 can gets only 47kH/s, when my old video card gets 79MH/s. No CPU mining for me Shocked

As someone else said, you can use GPUs for scrypt mining, but you can also use CPUs with cpuminer.

What would be a best case scenario for a CPU mining? If we use the newest generation processor, are we talking KH/s, MH/s or GH/s? Is there a performance difference between Intel and AMD like in the GPUs?
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Block chain size/storage and slow downloads for new users on: August 27, 2013, 08:21:09 PM
Are there any stats someone could provide as to how much bandwidth and storage per month are we talking about to run full node like Blockchain?
My "blocks" folder is currently at 11GB. Since block size is limited, the growth can only be linear in time (even if we occasionally increase the block size limit), but storage per dollar increases exponentially over time. Therefore, I don't see it as a problem in the long run. Also, see http://blockchain.info/charts/blocks-size

Bandwidth is currently a tougher question. I typically see bitcoin-qt using tens of kB/s, sometimes running at 200-300 kB/s for minutes or hours (this is mostly my upload to new users downloading old blocks). Unfortunately, I don't have any solid data to offer, just these observations.

Thank you niko for the info. Those numbers look lite in all things considered.

Are there any uses for the alt coins except being traded on exchanges? I get the value of Bitcoins and Namecoins but the rest ....?

I did not expect to see that many crypto currencies! Thank you for the link, amazing website.

As I expected the script coins seem to be on the top of the profitability lists. I will have to research further to see if there is any merit in mining script coins.

Thank you for the info Grin

Is there a way to compare difficulty vs. price to pick the most promising alternate crypto currency? What is the most popular alternate crypto currency today? How can I find out reliable detail without relying on "she said he said" chatter?

What is the best miner able to mine script coins? Do I have to use GPUs or is there a more efficient miner like ASIC that one can use to mine script coins?

I know that Bitcoin is a better way to go, but with he difficulty level and astronomical process of the ASIC miners there is no chance in hell to get any returns.
