4  Economy / Speculation / Re: GBTC Bitcoin Investment Trust Observer on: March 06, 2018, 05:25:17 PM
NEW YORK, March 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ --

Grayscale Investments, LLC ("Grayscale"), a trusted authority on digital currency investing, announced today the launch of four new investment products including Bitcoin Cash Investment Trust, Ethereum Investment Trust, Litecoin Investment Trust, and XRP Investment Trust (each, a "Trust," and collectively, the "Trusts").  As of February 28, 2018, Grayscale had $2.1 billion in assets under management.

"We are thrilled to expand Grayscale's offerings to meet rising investor demand," said Michael Sonnenshein, Managing Director at Grayscale. "Our team is committed to bridging the gap between the global investment community and the digital currency asset class. We remain focused on product creation and will continue to launch more single-asset and diversified products to provide exposure where investors are looking for it."

Each of the Trusts' shares are among the first securities solely invested in Bitcoin Cash ("BCH"), Ethereum ("ETH"), Litecoin ("LTC"), and Ripple ("XRP"), respectively. The investment objective of each Trust is for the shares to reflect the value of BCH, ETH, LTC, and XRP, respectively, held by each Trust, as determined by reference to the TradeBlock index for each digital asset at 4:00 p.m. New York time, less each Trust's expenses and other liabilities. Grayscale believes that the shares represent a cost-effective and convenient way to gain digital asset exposure relative to a direct investment in digital assets.

The Trusts do not currently operate a redemption program. As a result, there can be no assurance that the value of the shares will approximate the value of the respective digital asset held by each Trust and the shares may trade at a substantial premium over, or discount to, the value of the digital assets held by each Trust, if traded on any secondary market in the future.

Each Trust is a Delaware statutory trust based in the United States. The private placements of shares have not been registered under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended (the "Securities Act") or any state securities laws, and the shares are being offered pursuant to an exemption from registration provided by Rule 506(c) of Regulation D under the Securities Act and in reliance on similar exemptions under applicable state laws. An investment in the shares of the Trust is suitable only for sophisticated investors, and the Trusts are offering shares on an ongoing basis only to certain "accredited investors" within the meaning of Rule 501(a) of Regulation D of the Securities Act. Investors will be required to represent that they are "accredited investors" as such term is defined therein. The shares are only available for purchase through certain authorized participants engaged by Grayscale on behalf of each Trust.

As described more fully in each Trust's private placement memorandum, an investment in any of the Trusts is highly speculative in nature. In addition, each Trust's shares are subject to a one-year holding period in accordance with Rule 144 under the Securities Act before they can be resold without restriction. Because of the one-year holding period and the lack of an ongoing redemption program, shares should not be purchased by any investor who is not willing and able to bear the risk of investment and lack of liquidity for at least one year. No assurances are given that after the one year holding period, there will be any market for the resale of shares, or, if there is such a market, as to the price at which such shares may be sold into such a market. Please read the private placement memorandum for each Trust carefully for a discussion of these and other risks.

This press release does not constitute an offer to sell or a solicitation of an offer to purchase these securities, nor should there be any sale of these securities in any state or other jurisdiction in which such offer, solicitation or sale would be unlawful. Offers to sell each Trust's shares are made solely pursuant to each Trust's private placement memorandum.

Qualified investors should refer to each Trust's private placement memorandum, which is available from Grayscale. For further information, please contact info@grayscale.co.

How XRP distribution works ..

=====

Ripple Escrows 55 Billion XRP for Supply Predictability

Earlier this year, we committed to placing 55 billion XRP in a cryptographically-secured escrow account to create certainty of XRP supply at any given time. As promised, today we completed the lockup.

By securing the lion’s share of XRP in escrow, people can now mathematically verify the maximum supply that can enter the market. While Ripple has proved to be a responsible steward of XRP supply for almost five years – and has clearly demonstrated a tremendous track record of investing in and supporting the XRP ecosystem – this lockup eliminates any concern that Ripple could flood the market, which we’ve pointed out before is a scenario that would be bad for Ripple!

This move underscores Ripple’s commitment to building XRP liquidity and a healthy and trusted market. Long term, the value of digital assets will be determined by their utility. XRP has emerged as the only digital asset with a clear institutional use case designed to solve a multi-trillion dollar problem – the global payment and liquidity challenges that banks, payment providers and corporates face.

Unlike other digital assets purely driven by unexplained speculation, real institutional customers are already using and finding value in XRP, and governments, regulators and central banks are increasingly recognizing the role it could play in the global system.

XRP goes beyond what Bitcoin does well — a store of value — and delivers transaction speed and throughput that is orders of magnitude faster than BTC or ETH. While other digital assets continue to bump against their transaction limits, XRP remains the fastest, most efficient and most scalable digital asset in the world – making it the best digital asset for payments. It’s no surprise that institutions are looking to XRP to provide much-needed on-demand liquidity for cross-border payments.

Here’s how the escrow works:

The Escrow feature in the XRP Ledger allows parties to secure XRP for an allotted amount of time or until specific conditions are met. For example, Escrow allows a sender of XRP to put conditions on exactly when a payment can be completed, so the payment remains cryptographically locked until the due date.

We use Escrow to establish 55 contracts of 1 billion XRP each that will expire on the first day of every month from months 0 to 54. As each contract expires, the XRP will become available for Ripple’s use. You can expect us to continue to use XRP for incentives to market makers who offer tighter spreads for payments and selling XRP to institutional investors.

We’ll then return whatever is unused at the end of each month to the back of the escrow rotation. For example, if 500M XRP remain unspent at the end of the first month, those 500M XRP will be placed into a new escrow account set to expire in month 55. For comparison, Ripple has sold on average 300M XRP per month for the past 18 months.

Ripple’s vision remains the same – to enable the Internet of Value in which money moves like information moves today – and XRP is at the heart.

This is becoming silly, as that fork is SegWit2x in name only. I guess I won't mind getting the dividend distribution, but I'm hoping the trust doesn't screw up at some point and run malicious code from a bad fork that steals the private keys...

I agree .. It's probably a CYA move on the Trust's  part ..

Why DOGE is still relevant ( and will continue to be )  Wink
a few recent posts ( today ) from the DOGE reddit page

=====

 The other day I moved 1k usd using doge and it costed like 1.6 cents. 1 . 6 c e n t s. It's fast and cheap, something many other coins arent. People think of dogecoin as a meme but honestly it's just a way of life. It's the one coin I want to actually USE compared to other coins I just hold to make money.

=====

The best way to think of it is how the dollar’s exchange value has changed in compared to, say, the Euro, over the past few years.
Unless you’re in finance or an economist (or a currency trader) you likely weren’t all that worried that because the exchange value of the dollar compared to the Euro was increasing or decreasing, your dollar was going to be valued for goods and services differently from one day to the next.
You always knew that if you had a couple dollars, you could buy a burger or some shampoo.
Maybe, long-term, the price of that burger or shampoo went up by a few cents (maybe a dollar or so).
But within the relevant time frame, you never much noticed or cared that one day to the next, your couple dollars was getting you the same quantity and quality of burger/shampoo, even if the dollars exchange value compared to the Euro had gone up or down.
That’s Because the exchange value of the dollar doesn’t really affect the value of the dollar as a medium of exchange within the marketplace abstracted to a level relevant to your situation.

Same with doge.
A tip of 50 doge here, will still make someone just as happy as a tip of 50 doge did when doge was a fraction of its exchange value compared to the dollar years ago.
Expand that out a bit, and, if doge is as good as all of us think it is, there will eventually be a doge economy where doge is the main currency your brain automatically goes to when you buy burgers/shampoo.
And then you won’t be worried, on any regular basis, about the exchange value of the doge compared to any ther currency.
Doge will just get you burgers/shampoo everyday, because it’s subjective accepted value as a medium of exchange will be stable.
1 doge = 1 doge. Period Smiley

=====

1 Doge = 1 Doge mentality.

This is one of the few places where mentally converting the value of the currency back into another fiat or crypto is highly discouraged as a fundamental part of the culture. That’s really important, I’m fairly certain, because it means that within the subset of all people who are good faith adopters of doge, Dogecoin retains its store of value (subjectively/metaphysically/communally/ whatever) even when it’s value against other currencies appears to fall. All of this is an obnoxiously long-winded way of saying that the more people accept 1 Doge = 1 Doge and internalize it, including with regards to services that only require labor and minimal incidental interaction with other currencies for supplies, admin expenses, etc... then the more Doge becomes accepted as a standard medium of exchange. Because if doge is accepted from various service providers across the spectrum of needs and wants in an population, without reference to how much they would normally charge in other currencies, then you’ve really knocked out almost full acceptance for one of the big three factors of production (labor), and the land and capital factors get a lot easier.

Just an FYI ..

If you put $1000 USD into Doge on Jan 1, 2017 when the price was $0.0002 you'd have gotten 5,000,000 Doge.
Current Doge price of $.009263 values 5 million doge at $46,315.

Are there any coins that are free.. as in no transaction fee?

any DPoS coin/token can have o% transaction fee, like ark, lisk or rise etc., all they just need is change it to 0%
actually all pos coins can have 0% fee, the fee is there to prevent spam transactions ..

DOGE and XRP are nearly "free" for transactions ..

Any coin claiming to facilitate "micro transactions" would have to be nearly "free" to transact ..

Free? Meaning worthless? Nothing in life is free and a coin with all the attributes you want, would have inherent value, hence would never be free.

I think he meant "low transaction fee" ie nearly "free" to send and receive  Shocked Grin Shocked

Another thread full of ignorant people.
Go cry elsewhere because Ripple have surpassed Ethereum and is cryptocoin #2.

Ripple will soon become more decentralized than Bitcoin.  Cool
Go educate yourself

Nobody is crying but concern is being aired about what is going on and I am extremely worried that a coin like this can maintain top spot in the cryptomarkets but we are where we are. It is sad but the fact is that most people (ie sheep) would jump and quickly acquire any government backed centralized coin. Makes me wanna puke I get so sick Undecided

Personal opinion only, but my "theme" for 2018 and beyond is the rise of "centralized" projects ..
The well capitalized existing FinTech ( banksters etc ) companies that see the benefit of "blockchain"
have their noses in the tent and are here with wallets open ..
Since "blockchain" is open source and NOT PROPRIETARY and there are NO BARRIERS to entry ..
The only question is whether they take the "easy" route and partner with existing projects or develop their own ..
Some of both I suspect ..
It's our own fault really .. Too many well meaning "altCoin" projects were floated over the last several years
with no "self funding" mechanism to ensure future development or even the ability to keep the founding devs going ..
Rather than "community takeovers and re-launches" we're going to have well funded corporate "takeovers" ..
It's neither "good" nor "bad" .. Just the natural evolution of a maturing technology .. Enjoy the ride !!

Seriously folks?  This is old news.  Ripple put 55B XRP into escrow with a plan to release 1B into circulation each month for the next 55 months.  Ripple has been very transparent about its plan and stuck to its word.  When it put the 55B into escrow, the price went up, because it added credibility to Ripple.  It allows investors to accurately predict supply.

Thanks for the info.

This means we have an inflation of about 2.6 percent/month. 31 percent/year.  This is huge.

This is huge ..

Hardly ..
Try pricing XRP based on total supply ..
The distribution scheme for the remaining XRP has been widely KNOWN for months now ..
No secrets here ..
Ripple Labs has been very transparent for anyone that bothers to do some DD ie "due diligence"  ..
