1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / "Cryptocurrency" is misleading on: March 21, 2014, 03:59:59 AM
Bitcoin is primarily used as money and the word cryptocurrency is applicable in that case. But cryptocurrency can be misleading when you look at other uses of these proof-of-work protocols.

Colored coins or Bitshares could mean that a bitcoin represents an asset such as a stock or contract. We hear about people using the protocol to build Decentralized Autonomous Corporations and set up voting systems. I think that cryptocurrency is an easy word to understand for the general public but I hope there's another word that can capture the broader applications of Bitcoins and other blockchain based systems.

The current Bitcoin Foundation already has so much money and is seen as the central authority by the Bitcoin Foundation. Starting a new foundation wouldn't get rid of the problem that is the old one.

The Foundation should either be ignored and made irrelevant or completely replaced. Are there any examples of good or bad things the Bitcoin Foundation has done that I missed?

I was considering building one of these websites (based on another website, Sellbox, but for Bitcoin). What specifically are you looking for in this kind of website?

Another simple (minimalistic) price converter is Preev.

When you're mining you also want to use a profitability calculator to estimate if you're actually making money or wasting it on electricity.

I've recently announced BitTrust, a project that provides data and reviews on Bitcoin services. You can post and promote a business that you currently own or enjoy that's not listed, or rate a business and let others know if you had a good experience.

The ultimate goal is to make bitcoins more widely accepted and comfortable to use for average consumers--right now there is an aura of distrust and sketchiness that comes when browsing Bitcoin websites. Hopefully our website can help people know who they can trust.

Besides reviews, the website also hosts other data such as screenshots, recent transactions, and known associated public bitcoin addresses. In the future I hope to calculate further associated addresses (which originate from the same inputs) to collect more data about each service.

I'm very open to hearing suggestions so please let me know if there's anything to improve or fix on the site! http://www.bittrust.org
