About 0.1 from online poker and sports gambling.

Not the healthiest methods to gain wealth, I know.

  • For some odd reason "bitcointalk" gets removed and replaced with [Suspicious Website] (please see my post history). I mean, really?

I think that was about bitcointalk.us or something like that.

The exact deleted string was "bitcointalk's" without the quotation marks, but I believe you are right and the anti-phishing feature misfired.

The way I see it, the real reason for which bitcoin didn't significantly drop is the sudden reduction in the amount of available BTC's. It was estimated before SR's fall that roughly 70% of mined bitcoins were either hoarded, deleted or lost. The amount of BitCoins made unavailable by SR's fall increased to 75% missing bitcoins.

The real story here is what will happen with those coins.

If you can't handle the forums' usability you better not touch Bitcoin at all Tongue j/k

Ha! Good one.

I actually work in a field related to usability analysis (CRO) so I'm trained to spot this sort of issues. Call it a professional defect.

I think the policy could be placed in a more obvious spot. The text in the signup form would probably not be read by some impatient people Smiley

Pretty much so (mea culpa).

Anyway, the simple fact that there are multiple posts on the web frustrated by this issue (just do a Google search for "bitcointalk can't post") is I believe a sign that an usability problem does exist and it is faced by a non-trivial amount of new users.

What's even worse, this problem most likely disproportionately affects organic new users (such as those coming from Google traffic) which simply want to contribute to a thread they have found. Spammers, scammers and sockpuppets are not really affected since most likely new accounts created for this purpose belong to already existing users.

I'm not sure whether this is beating a dead horse and I also realize that a spam protection mechanism is needed.

Nonetheless, my first 2 hours on this forum were a facepalm fest. Here's why:

  • It was extremely difficult to find out about the newbie jail policy. I actually had to Google to find the answer. Possible solution: send a welcome e-mail outlining the limitations.
  • People can't post in the Newbie section right away. There's a 6 minute enforced break between posts (understandable), but somehow creating an account is counted as making a post, which is sort of dumb
  • If you get the 6 minute error, the post made is lost. If you hit back and then resubmit you will receive an error about the post already being there (when it's obviously not)
  • For some odd reason "bitcointalk" gets removed and replaced with [Suspicious Website] (please see my post history). I mean, really?
That's about it.

Cheers,

The second one. Anyway, I'm not really clear of how this timezone thingy works, so you will find some winning bets from yesterday as well.

Cheers,

The fall of Silk Road means the death of international online black markets just as Napster meant the death of file sharing. Enough said really.

If you're gonna use TOR, at least use it right.

Go to https://tails.boum.org/ and download Tails, it is a live operating system, meaning that you can install it on an USB stick and boot from it.

Why would you use it?

  • Because it comes with every bit of software you'll need preinstalled
  • Because it disables by default javascript and cookies which are extremely dangerous from a privacy standpoint
  • Because it's Linux based so it doesn't have the inherent flaws of Windows OS's (no keyloggers, Trojans etc...)
  • Because it doesn't leave a single trace on the computer it's used on

To be honest, this is exactly why I joined this forum. A gambling website I use has a bonus, but you have to post in their thread here.

Needless to say, I don't find [Suspicious link removed] policy towards new members particularly charming.

EDIT: Today I learned this website doesn't like its own name.
14  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Does the Government Hate Bitcoin? on: October 09, 2013, 10:00:41 AM
The FBI has the wallet of Dread Pirate Roberts which contains something to the tune of 80 million bucks. The catch? They can't open it because they don't have the password and there's probably a backup of the wallet somewhere out there just waiting to be used by someone else. FBI hates BitCoin. Source: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2013/oct/07/fbi-bitcoin-silk-road-ross-ulbricht

From another point of view, US poker players are about to discover that poker platforms that use BitCoin are anonymous. This effectively means an end to Black Friday (when US government decided that online poker is illegal) and it also means that the US gov won't see a dime out of it. Source: http://www.codingthewheel.com/archives/could-bitcoin-revolutionize-online-poker/

Finally, IRS has finally begun to take notice and they're most likely shitting bricks because BitCoin is very, very hard to tax. Source: http://www.politico.com/story/2013/08/bitcoin-tax-haven-95420.html

All in all, the US government either hates BitCoin, either is completely stupid and incompetent. I'd say the odds are 50/50 for each.

Cheers,

Mining is pretty much a losing proposition nowadays. The only people that make money are the ones selling mining rigs.

Of course, this presumes that the value of BTC won't go up dramatically in the future, but even so it would be cheaper to straight up buy them.
