You want the ability to set up a permanent Linux installation including Catalyst and all requirements for poclbm.... and you want a GUI for them in zenity?

Using wine for GUIMiner under Linux... that's not going to work.

The differences just have to do with different software.  The card starts with certain defaults defined in the BIOS - "something" is changing them after you get started up.

If you've got a third party card and install third party tools (MSI AfterBurner, for example) then that will most certainly have a different "default" than Catalyst 11.5 on Linux.  There is also chance you're also using a branded driver - Dell, Lenovo, etc will supply a Catalyst driver that is "tailored" to their computers rather than the vanilla Catalyst driver.

Catalyst 11.5 and Catalyst 11.6 under Linux even sometimes show different values on some cards.

The 69xx series cards are some of the newest cards with totally different architectures.  I've had some issues with 6950 and 6970 series all over the board - one of my 6950s didn't even have a working fan control in Linux.  Setting it to "auto" wouldn't start the fan until the card was over 85C.... which is far too late to start trying to cool it....

AMD/ATI's drivers in Linux have always sucked.  Always.  Realistically, their drivers aren't much higher quality in Windows, either.

Make sure you're using Catalyst 11.6 and SDK 2.4 with the 69xx series.

I had this card up to 440MH before, but the heat and resets were too much.

The precedence here is that luke-jr provided a service and the moment the service has some technical difficulties.... this guy is trying to go on a witch-hunt on the forums to find "almost 7" (almost 7 being defined as a number between 0 and 6.3) bitcoins by way of "public dispute" (aka harassment, slander and general flame).  It's immature and extremely entertaining, but very saddening to see luke-jr outright attacked for providing a service to the best of his ability without additional compensation or claim to any compensation - that is, even though an exceptional amount of work is done for eligius users, luke-jr's reward is to put up with nitwits.

That, of course, equally applies for all pool owners, operators and supporters.  You can find nitwits like GimEEE in EVERY pool claiming more than their fair share *immediately* and committing to outright harassment until they believe they're rewarded appropriately - or until a new PS3 game/WoW expansion/Twilight comes out and they find something better to do.

You can clearly see in the posts above that there is no sign of objectiveness or consideration for other individuals.  It's a very clear sign of immaturity and inability to properly function in any community when the thought that "I'm going to strong-arm the internet to bend to my will!" is the singular motivator of action for an individual.

Where are the explicit promises?  If we unionized and signed a contract with luke-jr, I would certainly like to know.  I would also like to know who represented me in negotiating those terms - as I'm sure I don't agree with whatever terms they chose purely out of spite.  If you're suggesting luke-jr performed the activities required of both parties in creating this contractual agreement, well... that's should be quite obvious in the ludicrous department.

I don't remember signing any long term agreements with Luke Jr. nor do I remember making any explicit commitments that I would even deliver work and on delivery of the work I never agreed to deliver.... I would get paid an amount reasonably close to my own expectations upon the delivery of the work that was never made clear.

If anything, I would insist that you pay me for failing to meet your obligation of committing work - that is, by neglecting to uphold your agreement to contribute with the rest of us you potentially cost me money.  At what time can I expect repayment of your obligations and clearly explicit promises?  In the event that you decide to neglect any rightful action on your explicit acceptance of any explicit promises, I expect a notarized letter to include any negotiation proposals in honest good-faith compromise.  If acceptable, I will also sign the document absolving any commitments you had to me by proxy of the pool.

Please be aware that there are many users of the Eligius pool and I am not responsible nor able to endorse any negotiations on their part and you may need to repeat this action in good-faith for every user.

PS - Bitcoin is still a very young project.  Please be aware and take proper precautions to avoid high blood pressure, nausea, male pattern baldness, hemorrhaging of soft-tissues, property damage and bodily harm during it's growth by utilizing good judgment during the journey.  This pool certainly isn't the only one with technical difficulties as the project grows and twists into something unrecognizable to the original concepts.

You outright accused developers of attempting to create an advantageous situation when using Linux over Windows with no proof, alternative testing or understanding whatsoever.

Did you bother to try any of the samples provided with the SDK?  You'll discover many of them bomb out when they encounter 4+ GPUs..... did we hack AMD and add the issue you complain the miner-developers created into AMDs own examples?

Try it yourself - also, try it with 2.4.  The last time I tried I was using 2.1.

It's a bit of a pain, but flashing is really the best way to go.  No need to reset the values (+lazy) and it can be more stable.

How could it be more stable?

You'll notice that normally a card is set with a widely varying range of values.  Rapidly switching between these values can cause issues - lock ups, hangs, driver crashes, etc.

In normal use, you're less likely to notice (and you're less likely to trigger the cycles rapidly).  For example, you would start a game at which point it would go through the different profiles until it reached peak performance (or switch directly to it).  It would stay in this mode for a decent amount of time and then eventually go backward through the profiles when the game ended.

In mining, you might notice you rapidly flip between these profiles when things like network connectivity get in the way.  Your card will go from 99% GPU usage at the highest performance profile down to the lowest settings and then immediately back up in a very, very short amount of time.  Some cards don't handle this very well, and anyone that has repeatedly locked up a card starting/restarting different miners or those that have tried to set aticonfig/AMDOverDriveCtrl values while a miner is running can attest to the hair-pulling it causes.

Again, some cards can handle all the up-and-down mode switching without issue.  in b4 "I do that all the time!1111"

As already mentioned, make sure you make a backup of your existing BIOS.  atiflash has a built-in command (-s X filename).

I don't bother with the RBE signatures, etc - I just change my clocks under Additional Settings with relatively good luck so far.

The only "issue" (really not an issue) is that on reboot after flash, Windows did infact not recognize the card.... and I had to go through letting it re-detect and put the drivers back in place.  Occasionally, it would do that every 3 or 4th reboot.  I stopped using Windows whenever possible....  

PS - for the record, ^ the above only happened on one Windows PC and a buddy with an identical card doesn't have that problem.

I bought two identical 5850s - one came with cables, one didn't.

Most newer PSUs have either adapters or existing molex for video cards.  Depending on the PSU, they generally have at least one if not two.  If your PSU says "CrossFire/SLI" on the box, you definitely should have at least 2.

That being said, go check your PSU to see how many 6 pin power cables you have and find somewhere to buy these guys in case you find yourself shorted.

Try using the GUI to re-edit and save your 6990 config.  Seems like it might be exploding when it tries to load it - maybe a stray > or some other character somewhere?

Also - can you set the values you want for your 6990 with aticonfig?  If the values are a bit wonky, I'd imagine AMDOverDriveCtrl might take a dive trying to set them.

Double check your arguments.  poclbm and phoenix have *VERY* different ways of defining username, password and host.  Did you possibly fat finger the phoenix line?  It should be something along the lines of -u http://username:password@thepooladdress.com:8332

poclbm lets you use the --user, --pass, --server, --port method.

I dunno where I saw it, but something had a miner script that took an arg that it passed to aticonfig -i$1 and poclbm -d $1.

I thought it was LinuxCoin.  Clearly, I was mistaken.  Oops.

It all depends on what the machine was in a past life.

Previous incarnations may have been SPARC machines or even DEC Alphas.  Clearly, the SPARC machine would find tranquility in using java in it's current incarnation and reject poclbm.

Perhaps the machines were also previously Latin Christians and can't stand operating Diablo.
