It's useless. Unless they're a fucking genius then the kid is going to be clueless. I bet it's something that could be taught in a high school class.

Mobile apps are the future. No way will Web applications catch up now, with everyone having their smartphones on them.
3  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: a easy to use directory for all linuxes [bounty 0.5 btc] on: June 23, 2011, 03:00:46 PM

I'm not really too clear on what's being asked for here...

You want the ability to set up a permanent Linux installation including Catalyst and all requirements for poclbm.... and you want a GUI for them in zenity?

Using wine for GUIMiner under Linux... that's not going to work.
4  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Different voltage for windows and linux? oO; [0.5BTC bounty] on: June 23, 2011, 02:51:07 PM

The differences just have to do with different software.  The card starts with certain defaults defined in the BIOS - "something" is changing them after you get started up.

If you've got a third party card and install third party tools (MSI AfterBurner, for example) then that will most certainly have a different "default" than Catalyst 11.5 on Linux.  There is also chance you're also using a branded driver - Dell, Lenovo, etc will supply a Catalyst driver that is "tailored" to their computers rather than the vanilla Catalyst driver.

Catalyst 11.5 and Catalyst 11.6 under Linux even sometimes show different values on some cards.

The 69xx series cards are some of the newest cards with totally different architectures.  I've had some issues with 6950 and 6970 series all over the board - one of my 6950s didn't even have a working fan control in Linux.  Setting it to "auto" wouldn't start the fan until the card was over 85C.... which is far too late to start trying to cool it....

AMD/ATI's drivers in Linux have always sucked.  Always.  Realistically, their drivers aren't much higher quality in Windows, either. Sad

Make sure you're using Catalyst 11.6 and SDK 2.4 with the 69xx series.

There was an evidence denial posted recently, so, I'm reposting the evidence (see above) which was never refuted.
The poster didn't use basic discussion principles, so I can't really respond other than trying to steer him back to the factual evidence under discussion.

I'm so glad you misused the term "basic discussion principles" in your normal subterfuge.

Quick edit - forgot the link: http://unrforliberty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Our-Discussion.jpg

Again, you can't simply introduce vocabulary that is bias and misleading while suggesting it is a standard of some sort.  You've done this several times - even if I did believe you, I wouldn't want to agree with someone that was masking their own inadequacies, incorrectness or inability to understand with these behaviors unless they were able to support their ideas in a sophisticated and accurate manner.

The MaxPPS announcement was in a *HUGE* banner at the top of the status pages for each address.  You missed it on your own negligence.

An example of your undeniable evidence that is very easy to disprove with the amount of effort equal to what I feel you are bothering to put in to resolving your own issue:

A possible reason "top hashers" on eligius are only there for a week?  Because we are able to switch addresses and aren't bound to ridiculous logins.  More realistically, and more factually, it is completely not true "top hashers" are leaving in droves after "being cheated":

http://eligius.st/~artefact2/

Top 10 contributors have been there for... how long?  Now you've walked yourself into a corner with your broad and scandalous statements that are easily disproved.... again.

If you're expecting me to chalkboard where you are incorrect in your assumptions of your balance - too bad.  luke-jr has already stated what he (as the system designer - proof by attestation of a user with superior knowledge than either of us) that you are not owed the amount you claim.  Had you been more civilized, it has already been stated he would be more than willing to immediately pay you out at that amount.

You can continue to throw around words like "cheat" and "scammer" as well as attempting to be condescending in the discussion.... You can continue to insist your evidence is undeniable while continuing to literally wrap it in bullshit.... do you know what that gets you?  Do you realize what it has gotten you?

(hint: it's below this line)

7  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Please test: New Experimental Pool "Eligius" (~350 GH/s) on: June 21, 2011, 08:07:21 PM
How can you prove me wrong? Link to an eligius miner stats page who used us-server on June 14th and didn't get scammed out of BTC.

You have yet to actually prove yourself right - which is impossible so stop not trying (not a typo - I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt that this is not your best effort).

You rant here on unquantifiable remarks like "scammed", "cheated", "stolen," "borrowed," - and the quantifiable parts of your argument are just outright bizarre.  6.3 is almost 7 bitcoins?  Really?  Link you to "an eligius  miner stats page who used us-server on June 14th and didn't get scammed" - easy.  I can link you to all of them because you have yet to qualify "scammed" with something more than your random opinions and obfuscated arguments.

I can prove to you that I got "almost 7 bitcoins" (qualified as a number between 0 and 7 but less than 6.3) on all of the days you've mentioned.

That is enough to invalidate your ranting as "OMG 1 h4s empirical evidence of criminal scammery!!111"

How about you link me to page with undeniable proof that luke-jr is intentionally taking mining earnings as his own with the intent of acquiring those funds through malicious use of a pool?  You provided little more than a description of the technical problems and limitations we are all already familiar with.

tl;dr version in gimEEE-language:  You require proof from the agent of consecutive retort proselytizing the morose, laudable, elementary criminality of the personality of the luke-jr syndicated criminal organization.  In that conviction, you have deluded the earnest and honest declarations of those individuals without malice as using bias-confirmations without logical aptitude.  To you, I unabashedly declare the fraudulent and scathing remarks to be unqualified and postulate undeniable and logical attestation of duplicitous behavior.

Stock voltage of 1.175, 975, 600 ~ 415MH and 77C.

I had this card up to 440MH before, but the heat and resets were too much.
9  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Please test: New Experimental Pool "Eligius" (~350 GH/s) on: June 21, 2011, 03:45:14 PM

The precedence here is that luke-jr provided a service and the moment the service has some technical difficulties.... this guy is trying to go on a witch-hunt on the forums to find "almost 7" (almost 7 being defined as a number between 0 and 6.3) bitcoins by way of "public dispute" (aka harassment, slander and general flame).  It's immature and extremely entertaining, but very saddening to see luke-jr outright attacked for providing a service to the best of his ability without additional compensation or claim to any compensation - that is, even though an exceptional amount of work is done for eligius users, luke-jr's reward is to put up with nitwits.

That, of course, equally applies for all pool owners, operators and supporters.  You can find nitwits like GimEEE in EVERY pool claiming more than their fair share *immediately* and committing to outright harassment until they believe they're rewarded appropriately - or until a new PS3 game/WoW expansion/Twilight comes out and they find something better to do.

You can clearly see in the posts above that there is no sign of objectiveness or consideration for other individuals.  It's a very clear sign of immaturity and inability to properly function in any community when the thought that "I'm going to strong-arm the internet to bend to my will!" is the singular motivator of action for an individual.

In other words....

Not to mention, why go out of my way for someone trolling?

Winner.
10  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Attention: mining pool operators on: June 21, 2011, 07:40:17 AM

Why 8 decimal places?

What if during the share calculation it actually extends to 32 decimal places?

Oh no!  This problem is worse than I thought!  Clearly, 32 is greater than 8, and if they aren't even bother to use 8, I'm missing out on nearly four times as many places as you made me aware of!
11  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Please test: New Experimental Pool "Eligius" (~320 GH/s) on: June 21, 2011, 07:36:19 AM
Should miners quietly accept the fact that a pool took work under explicit promises, then failed to meet the conditions promised? Apparently you're saying I should. . .
Well, I did several days of waiting and hoping and being optimistic, and it didn't deliver the coins he owed me.

This is my favorite part.

Are you running for governor of something? Wink

Where are the explicit promises?  If we unionized and signed a contract with luke-jr, I would certainly like to know.  I would also like to know who represented me in negotiating those terms - as I'm sure I don't agree with whatever terms they chose purely out of spite.  If you're suggesting luke-jr performed the activities required of both parties in creating this contractual agreement, well... that's should be quite obvious in the ludicrous department.

I don't remember signing any long term agreements with Luke Jr. nor do I remember making any explicit commitments that I would even deliver work and on delivery of the work I never agreed to deliver.... I would get paid an amount reasonably close to my own expectations upon the delivery of the work that was never made clear.

If anything, I would insist that you pay me for failing to meet your obligation of committing work - that is, by neglecting to uphold your agreement to contribute with the rest of us you potentially cost me money.  At what time can I expect repayment of your obligations and clearly explicit promises?  In the event that you decide to neglect any rightful action on your explicit acceptance of any explicit promises, I expect a notarized letter to include any negotiation proposals in honest good-faith compromise.  If acceptable, I will also sign the document absolving any commitments you had to me by proxy of the pool.

Please be aware that there are many users of the Eligius pool and I am not responsible nor able to endorse any negotiations on their part and you may need to repeat this action in good-faith for every user.

Sincerely,
supa

PS - Bitcoin is still a very young project.  Please be aware and take proper precautions to avoid high blood pressure, nausea, male pattern baldness, hemorrhaging of soft-tissues, property damage and bodily harm during it's growth by utilizing good judgment during the journey.  This pool certainly isn't the only one with technical difficulties as the project grows and twists into something unrecognizable to the original concepts.
12  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Windows won't detect more than 4 GPU is MYTH on: June 21, 2011, 07:04:45 AM

You outright accused developers of attempting to create an advantageous situation when using Linux over Windows with no proof, alternative testing or understanding whatsoever.

You support your argument with FUD and wild exaggerations.

Did you bother to try any of the samples provided with the SDK?  You'll discover many of them bomb out when they encounter 4+ GPUs..... did we hack AMD and add the issue you complain the miner-developers created into AMDs own examples? Wink

Try it yourself - also, try it with 2.4.  The last time I tried I was using 2.1.
13  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Different voltage for windows and linux? oO; [0.5BTC bounty] on: June 21, 2011, 06:49:15 AM

LegitBit beat me to it.

It's a bit of a pain, but flashing is really the best way to go.  No need to reset the values (+lazy) and it can be more stable.

Huh How could it be more stable?

You'll notice that normally a card is set with a widely varying range of values.  Rapidly switching between these values can cause issues - lock ups, hangs, driver crashes, etc.

In normal use, you're less likely to notice (and you're less likely to trigger the cycles rapidly).  For example, you would start a game at which point it would go through the different profiles until it reached peak performance (or switch directly to it).  It would stay in this mode for a decent amount of time and then eventually go backward through the profiles when the game ended.

In mining, you might notice you rapidly flip between these profiles when things like network connectivity get in the way.  Your card will go from 99% GPU usage at the highest performance profile down to the lowest settings and then immediately back up in a very, very short amount of time.  Some cards don't handle this very well, and anyone that has repeatedly locked up a card starting/restarting different miners or those that have tried to set aticonfig/AMDOverDriveCtrl values while a miner is running can attest to the hair-pulling it causes. Wink

Again, some cards can handle all the up-and-down mode switching without issue.  in b4 "I do that all the time!1111" Smiley

15  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: ATI underclocking memory under linux? on: June 14, 2011, 04:50:00 PM
I've got 6950s and 6970s.

RBE warns on certain changes that the native drivers may stop recognizing the card.. and someone else mentioned after a certain RBE edit even aticonfig wouldn't find the cards.

Are you using a signed 'rbe' excerpt from another card (~1kb) to get around that?

As already mentioned, make sure you make a backup of your existing BIOS.  atiflash has a built-in command (-s X filename).

I don't bother with the RBE signatures, etc - I just change my clocks under Additional Settings with relatively good luck so far.

The only "issue" (really not an issue) is that on reboot after flash, Windows did infact not recognize the card.... and I had to go through letting it re-detect and put the drivers back in place.  Occasionally, it would do that every 3 or 4th reboot.  I stopped using Windows whenever possible....  Wink

PS - for the record, ^ the above only happened on one Windows PC and a buddy with an identical card doesn't have that problem.
16  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Cables for 5850 ? on: June 14, 2011, 04:45:42 PM

I bought two identical 5850s - one came with cables, one didn't. Huh

Most newer PSUs have either adapters or existing molex for video cards.  Depending on the PSU, they generally have at least one if not two.  If your PSU says "CrossFire/SLI" on the box, you definitely should have at least 2.

That being said, go check your PSU to see how many 6 pin power cables you have and find somewhere to buy these guys in case you find yourself shorted. Smiley
17  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Ubuntu Natty Narwhal 11.04 Mining Guide / HOWTO on: June 14, 2011, 04:43:27 PM
darkpandora,

Try using the GUI to re-edit and save your 6990 config.  Seems like it might be exploding when it tries to load it - maybe a stray > or some other character somewhere?

Also - can you set the values you want for your 6990 with aticonfig?  If the values are a bit wonky, I'd imagine AMDOverDriveCtrl might take a dive trying to set them.

SchizophreniX,

Double check your arguments.  poclbm and phoenix have *VERY* different ways of defining username, password and host.  Did you possibly fat finger the phoenix line?  It should be something along the lines of -u http://username:password@thepooladdress.com:8332

poclbm lets you use the --user, --pass, --server, --port method.

Code:
Also, for C), I forgot to include the #!/bin/bash line... so I hope you see that is supposed to be a shell script that launches start_miner.sh with a 1, then 2, then 3, etc.  I was under the impression that LinuxCoin's start_miner.sh had a numeric parameter that started miner 1, miner 2, etc.

The start_miner script in LinuxCoin is sort of an interactive gui, lets you enter flags and parms without going CLI. I think OP means a startup script that just switches everything on as the computer turns on, and I've forgotten which /etc file in LinuxCoin you need to add it to.

I dunno where I saw it, but something had a miner script that took an arg that it passed to aticonfig -i$1 and poclbm -d $1.

I thought it was LinuxCoin.  Clearly, I was mistaken.  Oops. Smiley
19  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why do some rigs prefer diablo or poclbm? on: June 14, 2011, 04:32:42 PM

It all depends on what the machine was in a past life.

Previous incarnations may have been SPARC machines or even DEC Alphas.  Clearly, the SPARC machine would find tranquility in using java in it's current incarnation and reject poclbm.

Perhaps the machines were also previously Latin Christians and can't stand operating Diablo.
