1  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Hardware Wallet protection on a online computer on: June 02, 2021, 12:55:09 PM
Now that's a security setup! The question is, how do you manage DEFI (that was the origin of my questioning) if there is no option for signing offline (airgapped pc)?
I don't. The only coins I regularly use and hold long term (or think are worth anything, for that matter) are Bitcoin and Monero, both of which support airgapped wallets, offline signing, and transferring unsigned and signed transactions back and forth. I occasionally buy another altcoin for a specific purpose, but since it is always for a specific purpose I am never holding it long term so I just stick it on one of my hardware wallets for the short time I need it.

I have no interest in DeFi, as I think it will go the same way as the ICO craze, the IEO craze, or all the other crazes we see in crypto - a lot of vaporware, a handful of scams thrown in, the vast majority of coins/tokens/projects dropping to zero, meaning some people who gamble on the right project at the right time will make a lot of money, but most people will lose money, and very little of it will survive long term.
Thanks for the answer and your view!

I found the offline (original) wallet method to be the most reliable and after reading you, correct me if i'm wrong, it still is.
There are pros and cons to both methods, and there is nothing stopping you from using both methods. I prefer a permanently airgapped computer with full disk encryption for the bulk of my cold storage. I transfer transactions back and forth using QR codes, using two separate webcams which are unplugged immediately after use, therefore eliminating any concerns regarding transferring malware or malicious code via a USB drive. The computer is stripped of all unnecessary hardware, only runs a basic open source OS and my bitcoin wallet and no other software, does not share peripherals with any other device, is stored in a safe in my house when not in use, and is only used in a room with curtains closed. However, I also use a couple of hardware wallets for funds I want to keep offline, but I will also be transacting with more often than with my main cold storage, which I might only touch once or twice a year. The ease of use of a hardware wallet is significantly higher than that of my main cold storage - just plug it in to my main computer I can be transacting within seconds.

Further, setting up an airgapped and encrypted cold storage device is not a trivial task, especially for someone with little technical knowledge, and there are many places you can go wrong in both the initial set up and the ongoing use. Conversely, buying a hardware wallet achieves a very good level of security (and I'm certain that some would even argue a better level of security), and is far easier to set up and use.

Now that's a security setup! The question is, how do you manage DEFI (that was the origin of my questioning) if there is no option for signing offline (airgapped pc)?

Thanks everyone for the replies. My apologies for not answering before.
If I understood correctly from your replies hardware wallets are secure as long as the firmware is not compromised. The truth is I'm a bit surprised to see the community relying the storage to private companies when bitcoin and has been open source and DIY from the beginning. I found the offline (original) wallet method to be the most reliable and after reading you, correct me if i'm wrong, it still is. I'm referring to having and offline PC or liveUSB with your cold wallet there.

I'm trying to understand how a Hardware Wallet protects its data when connected to an online computer. If it's compromised one can easily read what's inside the USB. Am I missing something?

It's more of a being sure everything is fine outside the offline wall thing. Just to be sure I'm still the owner of those funds  Cry Cry So the only way to be in peace that everything is fine with my cold wallet is to check with my master public key?
Yes, that is the best. But, while creating the electrum cold wallet, did you created watch-only wallet along? You can use it to track your balance as well. Or, you can check it on blockchain explorer. But, checking it using watch-only wallet is recommended.

Use the link below to be able to create the watch-only wallet:

thanks mate! I think that's exactly what I needed

How can I check everything is fine with a cold wallet (offline Electrum)?
If you have exported the addresses on a txt file (or the master public key as Charles-Tim mentioned), then you can check their balance. You can either paste your addresses on block explorers and check it via the browser, or import them as a watch-only wallet (on electrum). You can also import them on a Bitcoin client, such as Bitcoin Core. The balance will appear after syncing. Note that the last option is the most preferable if you want to be independent of any block explorers/electrum servers.

I checked the addresses from the wallet on the blockchain
On the blockchain.com on generally on the block chain?

A mistake can occur while manually calculating your funds on each addresses. The best is to make use of your master public key (so far it is hierarchical deterministic wallet) to track the whole funds on the wallet with ease. But, why checking for this when the wallet already estimated your balance for you perfectly? You do not need to doubt the estimated funds on your electrum wallet balance.

How can I check everything is fine with a cold wallet (offline Electrum)? I checked the addresses from the wallet on the blockchain and the funds don't match with the balance on the wallet...
Needless to say without exposing my wallet security
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / next btc update after segwit on: July 27, 2019, 05:32:42 PM
I've been totally out of the BTC world since Segwit activation on 2017 and was wandering if there's been a relevant implementation since then the size of Segwit or is there one on scheduled on the foreseeable future? Also if there is some dispute between miners such as there was when Segwit was trying to be implemented.
Thanks to all!
10  Economy / Trading Discussion / Arbitrage on Bitmex on: March 06, 2017, 04:37:49 PM
I've been reading an article about arbitrage in Bitmex with Buy Spot vs. Sell Futures. The mechanics are very simple:
Find a basis between spot and future.
Buy X amount of btc on exchange.
Sell the amount of X + the basis.
At settlement date you win the basis whatever happens. (plus your initial balance).

If been doing some numbers and I don't see the arbitrage. If the price goes up you lose everything (you got margin called).
Am I missing something. Thanks!

yeaa!! i recovered my password and could access to my offline wallet! the only problem now is Electrum is not recovering my wallet. I made a backup of both addresses in my wallet and I have:
PrivBase58
PrivHexBE
PublicX
PublicY
(each followed by its key) for each adress (2).
I'm trying to make a new wallet on electrum with the private key PrivBase58. But it gets stuck in "please wait".
Any clue?
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: offline wallet recovery on: January 18, 2017, 06:48:54 PM
It let's me make to use "export the key list". But there is no public or private key when i click on print. Is it normal? Does it have to wait for the blockchain?
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: offline wallet recovery on: January 18, 2017, 06:37:51 PM
is it normal that the balance is 0 ? or i have to wait for armory to download all the blockchain to see me real balance?

Since Armory depends on Bitcoin Core, it won't show the balance until it reaches the block where bitcoins were transferred to those addresses.

However as onnz423 says above, if you can export the private (and perhaps public keys) from Armory, then you can import them elsewhere, such as Electrum, and go from there.
are you sure about that?

thanks. But it's taking forever to sync. Do I need to wait for sync? I will be moving money to a new account anyway
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: offline wallet recovery on: January 18, 2017, 12:27:00 PM
I just did that, but there are no bitcoins on the wallet! I don't thing I've done anything wrong, entered the 18 words Root Key. I know the address of the wallet and just found the paper backup was done before receiving any bitcoin. Please Help!
17  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: offline wallet recovery on: January 17, 2017, 10:23:36 PM
in my paper backup I have the 12 words for recovering root key and chain code. The problem is I don't know if this backup is from the online or the offline (is it possible?)(is that a problem??). The folder i found with .wallet and .watchonly.wallet and a paper backup is on my personal computer, so is accessible. The offline wallet is in Ubuntu, but since I don't remember the user password i can't access to the wallet. Besides, it's home directory is encrypted...

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask me again if I'm not clear with my explanations.

18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / offline wallet recovery on: January 17, 2017, 08:16:10 PM
Two years ago I setup an Armory wallet offline (USB) with it's online pair in my personal computer. By error I deleted the online wallet, but I thought it wasn't a problem since I have my offline wallet save.
Yesterday I tried to access to my offline, but i forgot my ubuntu password. Now I don't know what to do, the only thing I could find in my computer was a folder with files using the extension .wallet and .watchonly.wallet and a paper backup. But I'm not sure which wallet is all this files from: the offline or online.

Is it possible to recover my bitcoins?

thanks

20  Economy / Trading Discussion / OKcoin fees on: February 06, 2014, 06:52:31 PM
Hi. I've been locking for it, but I couldn't find and answer. Is Okcoin still working with 0% fee on trading. If it's not what's the best place for short trading (0 comission if its possible)?
