1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 90 BTC stolen! on: January 27, 2014, 10:13:54 AM
I'm really sorry that happened to you  Embarrassed

I don't know but I remember reading somewhere that if Bitcoins are obtained illegally, the bitcoin devs can disable those coins, is this true? At least the hacker wouldn't win anything with this.

Anyways good luck friend. Apparently there is no justice in Bitcoin Undecided Every hacker/scammer always runs away with their Bitcoins and they are never punished!

Boa sorte amigo!
3  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / How to introduce someone to Bitcoin? on: January 25, 2014, 09:46:49 PM
Hey guys Grin
I just heard about Bitcoin at the end of the last yer but since them I've become interested in Bitcoin. The fact that it has been growing so well and that there are daily conferences about Bitcoin around the world is fascinating to me.

I've been trying to introduce people to Bitcoin, but with no success. I normally show them websites that accept payments in Bitcoin, and I also show them coinmap.org, where they can see that there are about 3000 physical places in the world already accepting Bitcoin. At this point everything is going fine.

But then, I'm trying to think of an advantage of using Bitcoin over physical money, and I can't think of many. I tell them that opening a wallet is a lot easier than opening a bank account. But then I try to warn them that software wallets in the computer they use daily is a bad idea because of attacks from hackers, keyloggers and trojans, and that scares them and it also scares me a little bit to be honest.

Then, they ask me "How can I get Bitcoins?". And I'm not sure of what to say. A lot of people aren't very interested in economics or in investments, and some maybe are but at this point where a single Bitcoin can cost 800 USD it's very hard for a small investor to get into Bitcoins. I also mention that you can mine Bitcoins using your computer, but that it will cost them a lot of money to a get decent hardware to do that because CPUs and GPUs aren't great to mine Bitcoin anymore, and let's not forget the electricity costs.

So, I can't really convince anyone. The only thing that I can say about Bitcoin is that you can open a wallet in under 20 minutes and that's it.

Do you have any ideas?
Thanks.

Hey guys. I'm new to the forum and I'm also new to Bitcoin, and I have a question   Smiley

Should I use Coinbase to store Bitcoins? Are they safe?

Thanks.

I'm using them because of their buttons for on web sites.

They're upfront about who and where they are. They are the backend payment processor for Overstock.com, so they're not gong to skip out of town on their customer base and that makes me much more comfortable with them.

- Under Account Settings --> Security you can require two factor authentication for ANY transaction (also use a straight up cell phone or home phone, not something like a google voice number)

- Under Account Settings --> Bitcoin Addresses, you can print out a paper wallet of your account as a back up in case they do get hacked or go off line (you can take the paper wallet elsewhere if you want)

Blatant self promo... if you use this referral link, they'll also credit both our accounts with $5 in BTC in the event that you do a buy or sell of $100 worth of BTC: https://coinbase.com/?r=52da8abcb72d417a1e000002&utm_campaign=user-referral&src=referral-link  (info: https://coinbase.com/account/referrals )

Good luck.

Hey,

If I use a paper wallet , my  wallet address will be on a piece of paper, right? But, how do I access my wallet and check how many bitcoins I have and how do I send/receive bitcoins? Do I need to download a software or do I need to use a website for this?

Also, is the paper wallet system reversible? Can I switch back to Coinbase if I want to?

Thanks for the replies!

11  Other / Beginners & Help / Bitcoin Address and pool on: November 14, 2013, 06:57:16 PM
Hey guys Smiley
I'm new to Bitcoin and I have a question.
I made a Bitcoin address at Coinbase, which I think it's like an online wallet, and I recently joined a pool called "Bitcoincz /Slush's pool" and I'm not sure if I need a wallet stored in my computer to eventually receive my bitcoins from the pool website, or if I just need an online wallet like the one I'm using.
Also, does it matter which one or it's just personal preference?
Thank you! Cheesy
