1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Please help me install network drivers in BAMT! on: January 22, 2014, 03:33:05 AM
FYI, There is a more recent version of BAMT out there called SMOS available at http://www.smos-linux.org/ . This has more recent video card drivers and some other enhancements and builds on BAMT. There is also a crontab job setup though to automatically mine to their pools for a few minutes each day for donation purposes, so be aware of this and adjust if needed.

As others have already said on the middlecoint thread, getting drivers to work in BAMT / SMOS may be difficult, or you might get it working. But even if you succeed in getting the drivers to work, you may find that connectivity to your rig will not be stable anyway over a usb based wifi connection (high loss rates, remote control issues, lots of hassle involved). I have found for in my area anyway that my rigs work much better over a wired connection running SMOS Linux / BAMT. I have given up attempting to run any rigs over wifi reliably for long periods after much trial and error and I use wired connections only. This does not mean it cannot be done, but in my experience it's usually not worth it to go this route.

Other options to consider (best to worst):
  • Get a cable and pull a cable to you garage / attic / closet or location of your rig. If you're not comfortable doing this, see if you know any telephone people or cable installers and have a pro do it for you. They can probably come do it for a reasonable amount. As long as the cable is good, the connection will be very reliable and reliability is key for mining rigs.
  • Try Homeplug Powerline ethernet adapters. For about  $30-$40 you can get a 2 adapter kit. Better connectivity than wifi and easy to configure. You've got to plug it in for power anyway, right?
  • You may be able to setup a wifi router in 'bridge' mode, such as a Linksys WRT54G or comparable router running Tomato or DD-WRT firmware. The wifi bridge then simulates a wired connection, and your linux rig can use the normal Ethernet connection. The routers have much more powerful radios and tend to have more stable connections on wifi. There are several tutorials on how to setup bridge mode available online.

Good luck!

I did get a response on this (the ACH transfer) finally, Sonny V said there was a problem with the bank account number, and the balance would be back in my CampBX account in 5-7 business days. Good to know that there are responses sometimes. However still waiting, it's been a lot longer than 7 business days already. We shall see.  Roll Eyes

I'm having a different problem with CampBX - can't get money out through ACH (Direct Deposit).
Anyone else having issues with ACH withdrawals?

1. I initiated an ACH withdrawl of 532.04 on 10-25-2013. Executed on the system at 18:03:42 (per the history).
2. Opened ticket number YXZ-251-46719 on 11-2-2013. Sonny V replied, said it should be close, please wait and closed the issue.
3. Wrote back, no response.
4. Opened ticket number TZK-127-99217 on 11-14-2013. Sonny V replied, said the treasurer will look into it. No acknowledgement or replies to any of my emails back though. No response since then.

It's now been 30 days with 532.04 missing.
Any advice on what to do next?

On mining efficiency:

One other thing that I've found with tuning the cards is to optimize for power efficiency. Make sure you get cards with unlocked voltages so you can do this. I've been able to lower the power usage of my 7950's from 225 watts down to about 175 watts under full load while still getting good hash rates. The cards are most efficient when running about at or below stock speeds but undervolted (.962v instead of stock 1.25v). You'll also need a kill-a-watt meter to measure power usage at the plug if you don't already have one.

Thanks for sharing your discoveries on mining as well.

I've found that the Litecoin Mining Hardware Comparison page is super helpful for evaluating video cards and rig configurations. It is here: https://litecoin.info/Mining_hardware_comparison.

Also don't forget to factor in the energy costs of the PSU efficiency and the power costs of the overall computer as well into your calculations. I like 7950s for mining, particularly the Gigabyte 7950 - GV-R795WF3-3GD and the Sapphire Vapor-X 7950. I like to buy these at a discount for about $200 a card from ebay, craigslist, newegg (with sales) and amazon.

Good luck!
