1  Economy / Economics / Re: I almost lost my rock solid regular job because of crypto on: June 01, 2018, 06:50:10 PM
I can definitely say without a doubt that crypto self-education and research have cost me a LOT of time, and it has impacted me in negative ways from time to time (due to distraction from what I should be doing).
2  Economy / Economics / Re: Why I am quitting ICO's on: May 13, 2018, 02:53:29 PM
I agree with your point - I think they still hold to this day, since you see so many ICOs that are ongoing but have some vague message about how their revolutionary technology will forever change X. As soon as I read the whitepaper, I wonder whether their business model will be sustainable, but at the same time, from an "investor's" perspective, most people just look at how much money they can reap.

This is kind of a ridiculous game, to be honest.

I'm not quite fully aware of the controversy surrounding this call for boycotting. Can someone provide something like an ELI5 for us novice readers? Thanks Smiley

6  Economy / Economics / Re: How do you keep yourself from spending on unimportant things? on: May 08, 2018, 03:54:31 PM
Some of the best ways that worked for me were:

1. Wait a day or two before actually making the purchase.
2. Write down or think through your head if you'll actually be using these things on a regular basis.
3. Look at your monthly expenses and see if you're going over budget.
4. Is it a luxury? Will it impact my financial well-being?

I think 1 and 2 work the best for most people Smiley

8  Local / 한국어 (Korean) / Re: Merit는 어떻게 올리는건가요? on: May 03, 2018, 03:41:03 PM

9  Economy / Services / Re: Merit Giveaway for Contributions Fending off Altcoin Trolls and Scams on: May 02, 2018, 07:01:54 PM
Hey there, flora_digitalis

I came across your post just now, and gave a good thought about your initial post and the other replies you gave to the other supposed "contributors". I'm mostly active within the Korean subforum, and I have translated several ICO announcements before due to the allure of "rewards". But as I get to translate these announcements, I must read through, digest and translate every sentence I read -- and as I digested these business propositions and proposed business models for how they'll reward the investors, I came to the realization (via first-hand) that these are blatantly scam/fraud.

So, I did this: I went back to each of my announcements (or at least most) and wrote a warning post advising all potential ICO investors to beware scam ICOs, along with major red flags to look out for (some patterns I've picked up).

Let me point out some that I gathered (I gather you can auto-translate my Korean text, but I'll also summarize):

* Anti-shilling my own translated post - I wrote that there are suspicious information that needs to be vetted, like publicized team/location info, as well as their marketing content (looks fabricated).
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3033545.msg34277117#msg34277117

* Anti-shilling my own translated post - I also wrote that there has been no updates whatsoever on their webpage, and there seems to be no developer team.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3031137.msg34270832#msg34270832

* Within my translated announcements, I explained why one needs to be extra careful with these supposed ICOs and that people need to look for these red flags, such as:
- Sudden extensions of token sale dates because of unfavorable market conditions or low investment revenue
- Amateur-ish / seemingly non-existent core team members
- Whitepapers that contain minimal/non-existent details regarding technology, use of funds, etc. or non-professionalism overall
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3033545.msg33621495#msg33621495
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3031137.msg33621151#msg33621151

* Warning against investing DRG token sale (on my own post) due to lack of any developer or seemingly impactful core team members, as well as lack of any publicized progress despite their promises
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3015952.msg33427273#msg33427273
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3015952.msg32303258#msg32303258

I think that's it for now.

Either way, please let me know if you have any suggestions for other future content I can share. It also doesn't help that our only Korean subforum moderator has been inactive for many many months.

Thanks for reading!

Edit: PS: I really like your intent. Months ago, I took upon this task of translating this Russian whitepaper for some 'healthcare' related blockchain startup (EHFirst), but as I dove deep down into the details, there were so many red flags, so I spent over an hour on their Telegram channel just blasting away at the community managers and detailing all the wrong things about their whitepaper/business plan. It's safe to say that they won't be succeeding. I uploaded a few screenshots I took for you to see (for enjoyment- I took them to share with a friend on how stupid some ICOs are):

10  Economy / Economics / Re: Choosing the one | What I think! - Real Job or Full Time Crypto! on: May 02, 2018, 05:20:38 PM
This is really a hot topic since cryptocurrency encompasses social, national, cultural and even economic barriers. For someone in their 30s working a skilled job in a developed country/economy, they are probably not swayed by the volatile and uncertain nature of cryptocurrency. There's so much risk and uncertainty involved! What if you were in your 40s and had mouths to feed? Relying on income gained from short-term crypto trading/investments would not be a wise idea Smiley

13  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Are Airdrops really worth the time? on: April 29, 2018, 05:14:36 PM
I posted this somewhere else but I'll repost it here.

An airdrop is worth NOTHING if the coin you are receiving is worthless. I could create an ERC20 token today if I wanted, and give away 10 billion tokens to each person in an airdrop. The problem? Those 10 billion tokens are worth absolutely nothing. They may as well not be there as its simply a number in my wallet.

I would say 90%+ of the new coins out there are/will be worthless. Before even considering joining a bounty campaign or airdrop, I always look at a couple things:

1) Does the coin I'm receiving have a purpose/goal?
2) Do the developers have credibility/experience?
3) Is the announcement thread written in proper English and formatted well? (seriously this tells me a lot)
4) Is there a masternode pre-sale? (If yes, don't even consider joining the project. Seriously, look at my signature and you can tell how much I hate discord masternode pre-sales)

If a coin doesn't meet all of the criteria above, I don't even bother with it. If it does, I will do more research, and if the project sounds promising I will participate in any airdrops/bounties they do.

The key to finding success in airdrops/bounties is quality, not quantity. If you participated in the 1000 ONT airdrop, you probably made more than joining 500 random shitcoin airdrops. Be selective!

I think you hit the nail right on the head here, and there's so many shitcoins out there that it's just not worth the time to go through the process to even register for an airdrop. It's like, the ICO won't even make any money in the first place (and if it's a shitcoin, then say goodbye to your investment because you're probably not going to get it back).

Oh yeah - 1000 ONT airdrop, I'm so sour about that. Missed out on that newsletter signup. Sigh...
14  Economy / Economics / Re: Digital Money = Cashless Society on: April 29, 2018, 05:08:10 PM
Digital money definetely eliminates the paper money involved in the system. But would it make the system completely cashless is the main question. Well, it can definetely bring in a "less cash" drive than the cashless one. Offcourse achieving a cashless society is the bigger goal but we need to wait for that for a while. For now, less-cash society is whats being offered with the advent of digital money, and the whole digitization process  alltogether.

Offcourse the cryotocurrency will add to this in a good and substantial way as it is based completely on digital money, created and existant over the cloud. This if regularised in a more advanced and accepting way, will definetely pave ways for cash-less economy and will eliminate problems assiciated with paper money like theft, laundering, corruption, etc.

There's definitely quite a bit of merit to what you said, and I want to echo the idea behind your question on whether it makes any sense to go completely cashless. What if we did not have cash? Wouldn't that be some sort of restriction on society itself? Completely ridiculous. There currently is a drive to go cashless because it is a trend, it is convenient, and there is a market race between payment processors to become the most established within their respective markets -- like, see PayPal, Square, Payoneer, Amazon Payments, Visa/Mastercard/AMEX, etc.
15  Other / Serious discussion / Re: IoT and Blockchain on: April 27, 2018, 04:56:54 PM
I'm not sold on why Internet of Things technologies need a distributed ledger system. Devices already upload data streams to predesignated servers, but why would it need a distributed ledger system? Distributed ledger systems are good for certain things, but not everything. This is something we've been seeing quite often - blockchain technology "companies" trying to blockchain everything. Don't be surprised when these "blockchain" companies that promise to be the solution to X problem in Y industry screw investors over and fail to provide viable products as promised.

In the article 3 main points are listed:
-Blockchain needs good IoT for industrial and logistic applications, such as proof of provenance.
-IoT has centralized infrastructure now, but in the future it could be decentralized becoming more safe and resilient. The servers are single points of failure right now.
-Security in IoT

I understand your point, but the question I'm wondering about is - does IoT NEED blockchain technology? With exponential rise in the number of IoT devices in various industries and sectors in the coming years, what purpose does the public availability of all transactions recorded onto some distributed ledger serve? I'd love to hear out some specific examples, but I'm really not an IoT engineer to elaborate anymore on my points. (I only know a bit about smart metering technologies haha)

18  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin 10.000$!!!! What's Next? on: April 26, 2018, 08:18:17 AM
Bitcoin reaching 10k is a distinct possibility in the short term, perhaps in the next month or two. However, I would say Bitcoin going straight-shot to 25k is even a lower possibility, since even with a fad, I can't see any conceivable spike in demand to be wanting to buy that much worth of bitcoin volume.

25,000 dollars! Think about that!

https://airdrop.rupie.io
