1  Bitcoin / Project Development / Fun side project - the front page of crypto - topofthecoins.com on: May 18, 2021, 10:56:55 AM
Hey BCT,

Wasn't sure where to post this - hopefully it fits in well here...

During the crypto rally leading up to Jan 2018 I built https://www.topofthecoins.com.

My intention was to learn about crypto and get an idea of how this shiny new (to me) tech worked.

I fired up a new Laravel PHP project and also invested £400 in #XRP and #XLM.

At the time the site brought in $31.50 (0.02793) of #Ethereum (around 10 sales) after a couple of days of very tame marketing, which is now worth £66.93.

The £400 of #XRP and #XML (which I bought pretty much at the peak) is now worth £369 (still HODLing!).

I pretty much broke even, plus learned some valuable new skills.

With the recent crypto hype-train building back up, I thought it’d be good to do a relaunch whilst improving the site. Plus, I've been wanting to learn a few things for a while like:

- TailwindCSS.com - front end dev framework
- Coinbase’s new Commerce APIs called Coinbase Commerce
- Learn more Laravel framework and deployments with Forge

So on the weekend just gone, I rebuilt the site with some new features & a shiny new design.

The new TopOfTheCoins.com lets you post a message using 6 different cryptocurrencies thanks to Coinbase Commerce: Bitcoin, Ethereum, BitcoinCash, Litecoin, Dai and USDC.

There's now also a top message spot for each of those currencies, instead of just one top spot (that's still there though!)

It's just a fun pet project, but I really think that there’s a chance that the site can go viral and become the “Million dollar homepage” of the crypto era.

I genuinely think there will be some utility of this if I can attract a big enough captive audience.

I’d love to know what you all think: https://www.topofthecoins.com

Would love to know what might make this in any way useful to the BCT community... or if this is just a shitpost and not useful at all!?

Cheers!

Damn this looks interesting  Grin
If it gets more people/traffic, it can be profitable af.

But until then, good luck  Wink

Thanks!

It is super exciting. I didn't expect it to get many sales... but now that it's had a few, I really want more.

It's a delicate balance for the supply and demand of this. Without views people won't pay, but without people paying people won't view.

I'm going to continue putting out press releases and posting in places like this in the hope that a journalist or someone influential sees it and is feeling kind :-)

Hey,

A few days ago I launched a fun side-project to learn more about crypto. It’s a couple of days in and has had thousands of views from tech/crypto enthusiasts and has quickly become profitable (albeit in small amounts!)

This is the website: https://www.topofthecoins.com

The concept is this… users post a message on the site simply using a transfer of Ethereum. You don’t need to create an account or anything, just generate the unique Ether address. The message that uses the most Ethereum stays at the top, until someone posts a message using 15% more Ether than the previous top message.

The project has always had an upside for me, as it was created to learn a little bit more about crypto and the Coinbase API; to network with the community; etc... all of which I've achieved.

Having said that, since it's built and has had quite a few customers already just a few days in, I'm now trying to spread the word further to see just how big it can get, and if indeed it's possible to be a modern day MillionDollarHomepage.

Would love to hear any feedback/comments/criticism on the website/idea itself, and also any ideas how I can spread the word.

Thanks,
Joe
