1  Bitcoin / Hardware / SP20 Fan Noise on: November 10, 2014, 07:52:45 AM
Hello Everybody,

So I'm quite taken aback by the loud fan noise generated by the stock SP20 fans, was all along thinking it would be comparable in terms of noise to the S3 series.

Has anybody managed to replace their SP20 fan to something which solves the noise problem? Any known models/plugs/settings to take note of? I reallllllly need to get the fan issue solved if not the miner is just going to be switched off. Looks like I have to reassess my definition of "home mining".

Cheers

We found out that dropping the SP20 package may cause the boards to shift.

We got complaints from about 2% of non palletes customers. Most of the units can be fixed at home by replacing the boards.

We halt individual package shipments for one week, until we'll solve the issue.

If you got such SP20, contact support@ for miner assembly guide. If the SP20 was actually damaged, we'll RMA.

Hi. I got my miner November 7th. Got it all plugged in and the 2nd board would cause a halt in cgminer. Miner would not hash. Eventually, I disabled all the ASICS on the 2nd board, and the miner would hash with only the first module.

Noticed that the boards sat at an angle inside the case, so I opened it up and re-aligned. The boards are not screwed in or secured with anything except some grooves raised up from the enclosure. Pretty cheap design, which is prone to board shifting if handled rough in transit.

After re-aligning, I manually enabled and disabled each ASIC on board 2, and figured out that ASIC 4 will not work under any voltage, the other ASICs on the board work fine. Getting 1300 GH/s with 7 ASICS...so not too bad at max 225w per module setting. I'll turn up the juice once all the problems have been worked out, hopefully.

Got an e-mail tonight from Barbara saying they will refund 0.12 BTC because the SP20s shipped late. I'm cool with that, so I thanked her and also told her to forward my diagnosis to tech support. Also filed a form for tech support asking for directions as to how to proceed. Requested they send me a replacement board.

I'd rather not ship the whole thing back and lose hashing time. I can do major surgery on just about any electronic device without a problem.

I have an SP10 Dawson also that has been going without a problem for months now. I can't really say I'm impressed with the SP20, because I'm so far pretty underwhelmed.

Firmware is still 2.5.6, not really sure about any other versions. Hopefully they will get all the bugs worked out soon.

Yup, I'm facing the exact same issue as you with the warped board. Barbara has also replied to my earlier email which included pictures of the board when I unpacked it saying that they are looking into it. Let's hope they are able to get back with a fix.

Cheers
We'll ship replacement SP20 after fixing the package issue next week.

Guy

Thank you for the quick response, much appreciated!

Hello Deja & Yan7181,

I am looking for 1.1 BTC for all 4 of these Antminer S3 units together. You would have to factor in shipping and other customs costs separately as I am not in control of those. Will ship out using your choice of reputable carrier, so that we have a reliable tracking number.

How much do you want including shipping to Thailand?

Let me know and maybe we can come to an agreement Wink

Cheers

Ps, I'm willing to deal but either you send first or we use an on site escrow provider!

I'll just add on the shipping fees transparently based on your choice of shipping provider (fedex/dhl/ups are good providers).

For Thailand, yeah I'll prefer escrow and can ship them out once your funds are received. Would you be able to handle local customs? I heard they're not so BTC-friendly Wink

Khop khun khap! Smiley

I have extra 4 x Antminer S3 for immediate sale, delivery anywhere in Singapore included. I might even buy you a coffee while waiting for the BTC transaction to clear Smiley All running stock frequencies. No PSUs included.

Make a (decent) offer, easy and straightforward deal. If you want to self-collect and make payment at the same time, all the better.

Cheers

Also just received my shipping information for the SP20 order just being shipped (thanks!)

Qn: Can I power the SP20 using a Cooler Master V1200 Platinum? It's the one which can be found at http://www.coolermaster.com/powersupply/enthusiast-v-series/v1200/. I'm wondering whether 1 of these is sufficient to power a single SP20 because on the SP-tech website it states Nominal Power Consumption "1200 W With a 0.9 Efficiency PSU" and so far I am getting around 0.93 efficiency with this PSU.

Cheers

It is better to take EVGA Supernova 1300 G2, if you do not want  fire in your home.
Cooler Master has very bad PCI-E connectors at PSU side.

Thanks for the advice, will keep that in mind! Cheesy

Hey Everybody,

So I just setup my newly received S3s from Batch 4. All work well except for this one particular S3 which keeps on showing hash rate of ~338gh/s. On further inspection from the Miner Status page, I found that Chain #2 is showing ASIC Status of "-o-o-o-o -o-o-o-o -o-o-o-o -ooo-o-o" & ASIC # as "32" which is different from all my other miners showing "oooooooo oooooooo" and "16" respectively.

Any idea what is wrong? Everything is running on stock, connecting 2 S3s to a Cooler Master V1200 Platinum (will eventually run 3 on this later all on stock but 2 for now)

First time I ever heard of this one. That chain 2 board sounds more like it's from an S1.
I would first try a reboot and if that doesn't help maybe you should pull the cover and check that board.
If both boards look the same you could try re-seating all of your cables or just make sure they're plugged in all the way.

Thanks for your help, already tried a reboot and replugged all the PCIE power cables, I will certainly follow your suggestion and check the board after leaving the S3 to run for a couple of hours. At first, I thought to myself "oh wow, 32 ASIC chips means I get double the output" LOL  Grin

I'm also pretty surprised as my order shows delivery end of day 30th July for the B4 unit orders. Perhaps after going through a few pretty large batches of shipments, the logistics aspects have been sorted out and Bitmain is now able to provide all documentation so these items get cleared faster than before.

Order create time: 2014-07-24 14:50:23.0
Shows up as Shipped now, along with a UPS tracking number. However UPS is saying that the shipment has yet to arrive at their facility. Once it does they will update with an estimated delivery time.

Cheers

and how can i track EMS??. in batch 2 i had UPS as everyone and i could track delivery using Order Id, but in EMS website looks like i cant use that order id for tracking

Oh yeah, not too sure on that, but chances are you might need to check the China version of EMS (http://www.ems.com.cn/mailtracking/e_you_jian_cha_xun.html) since that is where the package is originating from. I've always been using UPS.

Just got my shipping confirmation for B4 Cheesy looks like Bitmain is really keeping to its promise of shipping before Aug 2nd, by 4 days early
15  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S3 PSU question on: July 26, 2014, 09:40:24 AM
I'm thinking of getting the Cooler Master V1200 Platinum PSU (http://www.coolermaster.com/powersupply/v-series/v1200/) to power 3 S3s would that run fine? Everything is going to be on stock, no tweaks whatsoever. I just need something that can power them reliably.

Also, a pretty noob question... The datacenter I am looking at provides 6 x power sockets of 13Amp over 220V each in the cabinet. Does this mean that in total I can put equipment that consumes approximately 12000~ watts of power usage without tripping anything? Or should that be ~2000W?

Cheers

How safe is it to power one blade with a power supply while powering the other blade with another one?

From https://bitmaintech.com/productDetail.htm?pid=00020140724130242972en240AMe064E it says "Don’t parallel connected different DC input from different PSU into the same Hashing board."

Looks like Bitmain has the new listing for S3-B4 up on their site, reflecting the new pricing of 0.65 BTC each. I suppose the next 30 minutes is gonna be passing pretty slowly for many of us Smiley
19  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Antminer S3 PSU question on: July 24, 2014, 01:24:35 PM
Ok I understand. I found some really cheap PSUs ( Tecnoware ) 500W PSU for 25€....what you guys say about that? If they are ok to use, I would use 1 on each miner.

As I wrote, a really cheap 550W PSU in my case was just a waste of time and electricity and single unit ended needing two of them. If you don't want soldering/modding server power supplies you need to invest in proper single rail PSU that either has constant wattage (24/7) figure in specs or is rated at twice the power you need (750W for single S3)

Fully agreed. At the end of the day, you want to have peace of mind that your mining operation is running stably. That way your time can be spent on better things, ie setting up more miners Wink
20  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S3 Discussion and Support Thread. on: July 23, 2014, 12:50:28 PM
yeah but right now these overclock like shit.  So use 2 cables and power 3 with the evga

I've been wondering.  Is it really worth trying to OC these?  Is the risk worth the result?

By OCing you:

1 - void your warranty
2 - risk damaging your Ant
3 - use more electricity
4 - generate more heat
5 - need to use 2x the PSU cables

All for a measly increase in hashrate?

M

Not worth it at all, but some people just like to push it to the limit.

I guess it also depends on whether you want to milk the hardware down to every single last milihash worth before difficulty skyrockets, or be content with letting it run at stock hoping that hardware wouldn't break down prematurely.
