So, is BitSimple dead, effectively?

The short answer is no.  There will be a major announcement regarding expanded services by the end of the week.

Price alert: BitSimple ($624) is currently offering a higher price (after exchange fees) than either BitStamp ($623) or Coinbase ($620) for your coins.

How much free space you have in drive C?

About 55 GB.  It has not occured again and bitcoind was able to restart without a rebuild or re-index.

Any ETA on sales to new customers?

Not at this time.  There are some fraud related issues to resolve and we may need to implement enhanced identity verification.  As soon as we have an ETA will will provide an update.
5  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Introducing BitSimple. A simpler way to buy and sell bitcoins. on: July 18, 2014, 12:15:23 AM
We are still working with our processor to restore ACH and Wire withdraws, and updated ETA is by the end of next week (07/25).  We apologize for the delay and have added an option to receive payment by company check in the interim.  Payments can either be requested by first class mail or overnight mail.
6  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Introducing BitSimple. A simpler way to buy and sell bitcoins. on: July 16, 2014, 01:28:20 PM
BitSimple has resumed the sale of bitcoins to existing users.  Sales to new customers (including users which have not previously completed a sale) are still on hold at this time.

Thank You,

BitSimple Staff
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Bitcoind read error and crash. Log not showing much detail. on: July 15, 2014, 10:40:35 PM
Might be me, but "ERROR: ReadBlockFromDisk : OpenBlockFile failed" looks like an error. Could you try renaming that offending file to some unrelated name?

If that fails, you may consider trying to re-sync after deleting or renaming the C:\bitcoin\data\blocks folder.

Yes would be the error I can see how the title would be confusing.  Outside of the debug.log there was no error message when the application crashed.  I restarted bitcoind and it validated blocks without issue.  The start of the log after restart is the following (no indication of the read error).

Bitcoind has been very reliable.  It was just unusual to get a fatal read error which caused the application to crash and then restarting it showed no issue.  It would indicate the error (whatever caused it) was recoverable.

No.  Activity is capped at 14 every two weeks.  If you make a billion posts in two weeks your activity will only increase 14.

There was a short outage in transaction reporting last night due to bitcoind crashing.  It has been restored and all transactions should be properly reporting now.  If you continue to experience a problem please contact the help desk: https://support.bitsimple.com.
11  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How can I keep a Hot wallet secured ? on: July 15, 2014, 06:24:08 PM
No startup can follow all these u have said. This is simply not economic and I guess u did not follow yourself all the above at the beginning of BitSimple.

Of course a "startup" can and should pay the costs associated with proper security.  A startup doesn't mean some guy writing code with a budget of $50.  The costs for a solid security infrastructure are a few thousand dollars for the first year.  You can either do security correctly or you can "do it on da cheap"; the latter has rather predictable results.
12  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: How can I keep a Hot wallet secured ? on: July 14, 2014, 07:27:36 PM
I'm not concerned about wallet's internal security in this case. I'm concerned about how to secure the wallet access on my web server.

DO use dedicated servers (rented or collocation) in a secure reliable datacenter.
DO a clean install of operating system on all servers using IPMI or IKVM to ensure there are no datacenter backdoor.
DO use Principle of Least Priviledge in all your design decisions.
DO use strong credentials for server access (long random passphrases are good, but public key cryptography is better).
DO strengthen authentication by limiting authorization to IP addresses.
DO take advantage of multiple Ethernet ports to create a dedicated secure internal LAN.
DO require a VPN connection to VPN endpoint (hardware firewall or dedicated server) for remote access to the secure internal LAN.
DO isolate the hot wallet to single purpose server which is connected only to the secure internal LAN.
DO ensure all backups are strongly encrypted (AES-256 or equivalent) and stored offsite to prevent unauthorized access via backups.
DO ensure your public bitcoin node (not wallet) has a large number of connections to the network.
DO consider using additional listening nodes to provide a more complete view of the network.
DO use dedicated machine (netbook fits nicely in a safe) to process cold wallet transactions offline.
DO use RAID for redundancy and sign agreement with datacenter that failed disks are ship to you for verification and destruction.
DO authenticate transaction requests from the webserver to wallet server.
DO add heuristic analysis of transactions and halt the hot wallet on unusual activity (requests from honeypot accounts, a high number of requests, invalid requests).
DO use an intrusion detection system (IDS).
DO use encrypted wallet on hot wallet to prevent access after power cycle.
DO consider having the hot wallet power off (better safe than sorry) when unexpected activity occurs and ensure there is no possibility of lost keys in the event of sudden shutdown.

DO NOT allow public access to IPMI or IKVM.  Limit connectivity to secured internal LAN only.
DO NOT allow direct access to wallet server.  Limit access to the secure internal LAN only.
DO NOT use disks without whole disk encryption.  All your security can be bypassed by just pulling the disks from the server.
DO NOT use datacenter switches for your internal LAN.  VLAN is only secure if you have sole access to the VLAN settings.
DO NOT use a "trusted" third party to provide you Bitcoin transaction data.  You could be put on an inferior fork and never know it.
DO NOT use a Virtual Private Server unless it is running on your hardware.  A VPS you "control" on hardware someone else controls is nothing but the illusion of security (see linode hacks).
DO NOT rely on transaction id of unconfirmed transactions.  Match "payments" by receiving address and unique inputs.
DO NOT have receive payments directly to hot wallet to limit the damage if hot wallet is compromised.  Instead route all incoming payments to cold wallet (and manually load hot wallet as needed).

If all that sounds too hard well you shouldn't be handling digital cash.  The security measures taken by Bitcoin service providers should be comparable to what is taken by a bank or gold bullion depository.

Update:
On Friday morning (07/11) a dispute made by a customer acting fraudulent resulted in our bank placing a hold on our account.  This unexpected and excessive hold resulted in ACH failures by our processor.  The actions of our bank we used for processing were improper and turned a minor issue into one which affected our operation.  There is an ongoing investigation by both our staff and the bank into why this happened.  BitSimple would like to emphasize that as always (and unlike any traditional exchange) there was no risk of customers losing funds.  BitSimple is the counterparty in every transaction, and as such it is self funded.  It doesn't at any point in time hold an operationally significant amount of our customer's money.  A few users were affected by disrupted payments before we suspended additional sales.  We have contacted them individually to make arrangements to settle the amount owed by alternative payment methods while we resolve the issue.

As of today, the ability for users to sell Bitcoins has been restored in a limited capability.  At the current time the only available payment option is to a PayPal account.  We are working with our ACH processor to restore other payment options and this is estimated to be completed by 07/16/2014.  We will provide further updates as they become available.  Bitcoin purchases are still currently disabled.  They will be enabled for existing customers (those who have completed a prior purchase) within the next 48 hours.  Bitcoin purchases for new customers will be enabled at a later date.  The requirements for enabling purchases for new customers will depend on the outcome of the investigation and steps by the banking partner to prevent such disruptions in the future.

We appreciate the understanding shown by our users while we work to restore payment functionality.  We understand users may have questions however we can not provide further details until both our and the bank's investigation is complete.

Thank You,

BitSimple Staff

Any update on when buying and selling will be reactivated?

We are changing ACH providers and there was an issue with in implementation at the bank.  To avoid a situation where we would be unable to promptly payout funds owed we disabled bitcoin sales.  Sales will be restored on a limited basis (payment only available by PayPal) within 24 hours and it is expected we will have all withdraw methods restored no later than 07/16.

BitSimple Staff.

Thank you for the feedback.  I have made a note to have the withdraw page clearly indicate the fee (if any) will be deducted from the amount withdrawn.  I don't see why it can't also who the "net amount".  You asked how long it will take to get funds from PayPal to your bank.  PayPal uses ACH so it isn't going to be any faster or slower than any other ACH.  Depending on the timing it is usually three to four business days (excluding weekends and bank holidays like the 4th of July).

Making an ACH withdraw directly from BitSimple is cheaper (normal ACH has no withdraw fee) and if you need funds faster our bank processor offers overnight ACH for a nominal fee.

Anyone able to help on online chat.  I have been waiting for close to 10 minutes.  Thanks.

Chat is online and there is at least one rep standing by.  I am not sure why you had an issue connecting.  If the problem continues please send me a PM or an email to support@bitsimple.com.
