Using special characters might be insecure because they are often used in computer programming languages. In the C++ programming language ~ is the destructor. It gets called when you destroy (reaching end of scope, or calling delete to a pointer to) the instance of the object. Also, regarding “approximately equal”, I don't want to spend “approx. 20.99”, but rather “exactly 20.99”.
I didn't mean for the definition to be taken literally. I'm just saying the concept of "approximately equal to" already associated with the tilde would make for an easy transition into thinking of the tilde as a currency symbol. The tilde means "approximately equal" when it is between two entities like this: a~b. I think it could take on its own meaning as a currency symbol if it just trails a number like this: 20.99~. |

The tilde seems like a vague symbol for me. What's wrong with a symbol that includes the letter B?
Nothing, except that these symbols aren't readily available on a keyboard. The tilde is accessible on any keyboard, even phone right now. |

Problem with your proposal: The possible interpretation is too broad. Nobody knows which currency you mean when using "~". This means you could use "~" when describing any (abstract) form of money, but not a specific currency. That said, I also think that "BTC" and the "B-with-legs"-symbol are already too widespread to be abolished as currency descriptors of Bitcoin. ya.ya.yo! That is a problem common to any new symbol/entity relationship. If it were to be used consistently, I think the tilde could come to be recognized as meaning bits or bitcoin. |

I just downloaded this app and it's excellent. It's fully featured, stable and has a slick interface. iPhone users can now finally receive AND PAY with Bitcoin using this app. If you own an iPhone, you should really try it and give these guys some support. I can finally do something I've never been able to do before - pay with Bitcoin at a brick and mortar store.

This is one of very few coins that is actually innovative. I don't have time to human-mine myself, but I think the idea has huge potential, especially in developing countries since it is possible with a regular desktop computer and some human time/effort. For those of you human-mining, I'm curious, how many HUC are you earning per day?

That's a great question. I have noticed that the value of Huntercoin appears to be more independent from Bitcoin than most Alts. It has remained relatively steady during the wild down and up swings in Bitcoin value these past few weeks. This was even noted in an International Business Times article: http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/dogecoin-down-mt-gox-theft-has-knock-negative-effect-all-cryptocurrencies-1437787I wouldn't have expected it, but Huntercoin may turn out to be one of the most stable cryptocurrencies. I've posted before that I think it is significantly undervalue given its significance as the first human-minable cryptocurrency. My prediction is that we will eventually reach a tipping point of people discovering the coin and playing the game. The coin will find enough supporters to promote it to rise sharply to its true value, somewhere amongst the other innovative coins like Mastercoin, Nxt, Namecoin and Counterparty, where it will then remain relatively stady. |

Any particular reason why HUC is going up in price so fast?
Perhaps a feedback relationship. I imagine people look into the coins that they see rising on the market cap websites. When they discover that Huntercoin is a truly innovative project rather than a copy/paste coin they may invest, further boosting the price. I also wrote a post about Huntercoin and my predictions for its near future value, which may have helped get the ball rolling. Coin connected to a game is a good idea but this doesnt mean that huntercoin will make this. Show me a coin which is usable in any really played game like WoW gold, WoT gold, WT Golden Eagles (...) and it will skyrocket. However no marketing department of any these games noticed that yet  Yes, I agree, a coin connected to a game that already has a massive following could be huge, but I think it would be difficult to implement. Huntercoin works because, as far as I understand, the game states, players - everything is encoded in the blockchain. I wouldn't necessarily call Huntercoin fun (though it can be). Movement and actions are transactions, which update frame by frame with the mining of new blocks every minute. It is something best played passively, in the background while you work or surf the internet. The game aspect is more of a vehicle for realizing the concept of human mining, which works brilliantly. |

I personally dont have any interest in playing the game. What are the issues with the wallet currently? That would be my primary concern, other than who is going to take over the development of the coin and participate in the thread now that the primary developer has passed away.
I'm not sure what the issues are (besides an annoyingly long initial blockchain download/synch), as I haven't had any. As far as I'm concerned, there aren't any issues, just user error. I believe there was a hardfork a few hours after launch and people had issues because they weren't using the most up to date client. Snailbrain appears to be the primary developer now. I think he was involved from the beginning of the project, but I'm not sure and I don't know how many others are involved. MithrilMan is working on an updated client with additional features. I'm not connected with the project in any way. I just discovered it here on bitcointalk a few weeks ago and took an interest in it. Everything I have written in this thread was gathered from my own research. I was obviously concerned when the news of the primary developer passing away was released. Did they fix that atrociously slow wallet?
The wallet is very slow to download the blockchain and synch when you first open it, but in all other respects it operates fine. I believe the Namecoin wallet, from which Huntercoin was extended has the same issue. It is annoying, but manageable. I understand from the website that a lite version of the wallet is in development. I was considering an investment, but reading the thread makes me pretty nervous. Sounds like a lot of issues with both the wallet and game recently. It is a bit complicated to get started, but not more so than most other coins in my experience. The only thing out of the ordinary I had to do to get the Huntercoin client working was add a .conf file with additional nodes, which is detailed here: http://huntercointalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=52. I have only spent a few hours playing around in in the game, but I haven't had any issues thus far and I'm not very savvy at these types of things. I suspect the problems are from a vocal minority. I suggest you try running the client and decide for yourself. |
