It's all based upon the user base.  The more followers something has, the stronger and more widely used it will be.  This is no different than bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency.  Bitcoin is the leader simply because it made the space and hence had the opportunity to grow a dramatically large user base.  Another crypto could quite possibly be better, but it doesn't really matter if people aren't using it.
