1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Been asked to migrate old 2020 wallet.dat in Latest version of core on: August 11, 2024, 03:37:56 PM
I don't know what will be the result but I would suggest before you import it to the latest one make sure to make copy if your wallet.dat first(The original wallet.dat file should be your backup)
Then use the copy backup to import to the latest version of Bitcoin core for safety purposes and I'm sure migrating won't affect anything in your wallet.

I have the 2020 .dat backed up in multipe locations so not to worried about anything happening this copy of a backup.

I am now wondering can i just make a new backup of the wallet from core 27.1.0 and that will be it sorted.

Thanks
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Been asked to migrate old 2020 wallet.dat in Latest version of core on: August 11, 2024, 03:19:09 PM
Just loaded an old Core backup from 2020 and was informed about migration in version 27.1.0, is this something i need to do soon?  it talked about legacy wallets, but all the addresses in the backup are bc1q, native segwit addressess.  Anything i should be concerned about or is it pretty straight forward?

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies, particularly from nc50lc.  As always a cool came reply.  Thanks
4  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Risks with Assumevalid on: April 17, 2024, 07:31:14 PM
I am about to do an IBD and i have assumevalid=(Latest block). i understand some of the risks involved with this, regarding being feed a false history etc:  But if i don't plan to use the node to validate transactions for a long time 6 month min then i am assuming that my node will eventually check all blocks thoroughly and so its fine.

Thanks
5  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: chainstate files? on: March 03, 2024, 07:10:44 PM
-snip-
Why rename it? Old, corrupted chainstate folders still use a few GB.

Wouldn't it be better to delete the folder entirely?
That besides the point.
Of course OP can do that to get rid of the restricted files but it's what previously suggested and followed by the OP.

But the point is, this particular issue can't be solved by --reindex/--reindex-chainstate alone as it somehow can't wipe the chainstate directory by itself.

This is correct, I renamed the old, locked "chainstate" folder to "chain" then ran bitcoind -reindex.  Bitcoin core created a new chainstate folder,  until that point, --reindex/--reindex-chainstate wouldnt work.
6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: chainstate files? on: February 28, 2024, 11:09:44 AM
What error do you receive when you're running the reindex? Try renaming the chainstate to another name before trying the reindex again. Bitcoin Core should trigger a reindex if it doesn't detect the chainstate directory in the datadir.

8  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Multisig issue using a ledger on: February 09, 2024, 11:37:59 AM
Many thanks for the replies always great to get help here.  I ended up putting the multisig backup into Sparrow wallet and it worked first time, it found the jade and just used it to sign.  i will play around and getting it working on Electrum for the learning.

Thanks again
9  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: Multisig issue using a ledger on: February 08, 2024, 12:21:23 PM
So you mean you imported the seed phrase generated from the ledger hardware device and then imported it to the Jade hardware wallet and now you are trying to make a transaction and use Jade to sign the transaction am I right?

Yes this is right.  The Ledger I originally used has shit itself and i don't want to buy another Ledger.  So when i connect my HW to Electrum it is asking for the fingerprint of the Ledger.  There is bound to be away around this, nc50lc hs given me an idea, i will let yous know how it works.  Thanks for the replies.

You may have to to re-create the MultiSig wallet using Jade

So i just cut and paste the 3 Zpubs into a new electrum 2of3 and it recognized the previous transactions.  however, when i went to send it doesn't give me the option to sign.  I get it, electrum doesn't know anything about the HWs now, any ideas on how to work this out?

so in the Preview pay page, the sign button is greyed out. There must be a way to initialise the HWs?

10  Bitcoin / Electrum / Multisig issue using a ledger on: February 07, 2024, 11:54:13 AM
So i have a 2 of 3 setup using a trezor, jade and a ledger.  I recently put the seed words for the ledger onto a jade HW and tried to use it to sign a transaction as if it were from the ledger.

Electrum is looking for the ledger bip32 root fingerprint, so even tho the seed is the same but is on a jade. is there a way to get Electrum to recognize the jade as the ledger?
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / PGP verification of Bitcoin core download on: November 30, 2022, 09:36:24 AM
So trying to verify 24.0 but using Kleopatra I keep getting a "signatures could not be verified" message.  I am guessing this is because I need at least one of the builder keys from the github key list.  But when I try to import one of them using this

gpg.exe --keyserver hkps://keys.openpgp.org --recv-keys E463A93F5F3117EEDE6C7316BD02942421F4889F

I keep on getting "keyserver receive failed: Certificate expired" message, which surely can't be right, what am I doing wrong here.  Undecided
12  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Verifying core software on: May 10, 2022, 06:54:03 AM
You have not imported the public keys of the signers, so gpg can't verify that the signers are who they say they are.

You can get the keys here: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/tree/master/contrib/builder-keys

Verification instructions: https://bitcoincore.org/en/download/

Thanks got it.....  Wink

Thanks for the replies guys.  I think I'm getting the vibe that this isn't a great idea.  it is at a physical meetup and there is prob a lot that could go wrong over time.  Appreciate the replies as always.  Wink

Hi all, me and a couple of bitcoiners have been considering running a coinjoin thing at our local meetup, but are wondering if it is even worth doing?  i haven't really gamed it out in my head yet, just thought I would come on here and have you guys blow holes in it quickly if it's stupid.  fire away.

16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Are you supporting the network if you hide your node behind Tor? on: May 17, 2021, 09:09:43 AM
If you mask your node behind Tor for privacy purposes, does that mean you are not allowing your node to be discoverable, which inadvertently means you are not allowing others to retrieve network information from your node?

So in a way this is actually not really supporting the network right?

NO others, (including clearnet nodes) can connect to a Tor node.

The best why to support the Bitcoin network is to buy and hold bitcoin.  self custody it and use your own Node to verify you received it.  Wink
17  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin no longer relevant? on: May 04, 2021, 03:59:42 PM
Is Ethereum and other altcoins taking over and replacing Bitcoin?
If so, how fast will this happen?

Anything replacing Bitcoin would destroy the store of value thesis which is a fundamental of money, this would be game over.  I dont believe it will ever happen as the market is not that stupid.

Most people who ask or believe it are basically hoping their bags will be the one to do it.  If your altcoin could do it then what would stop your alt being replaced in 10 years by another.....? ie: Store of value would be dead.
18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Whats the current Bitcoin Core release? on: April 17, 2021, 09:08:29 AM
How's that true? It literally says "Latest Bitcoin Core release: 0.21.0" on the top of this forum. I checked bitcoincore.org too and it also says 0.21.0.

Doh, im an idiot sorry ........  Grin Grin Grin
19  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Whats the current Bitcoin Core release? on: April 17, 2021, 09:02:51 AM
I currently have Core 0.20.1 , but i just checked both the post by AChow on this site and the bitcoincore.org and they say the latest is 0.20.0   Huh
20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Using Bitcoin Core over Tor still getting a incoming connection at real ip on: December 20, 2020, 09:51:04 AM
Thanks for the replies.  will try adding bind=127.0.0.1 and see, i know it can take awhile to be found.

Cheers
