If you do not procrastinate, have good discipline and a clear mindset as to in which area you want to become a specialist within then you could certainly do so. Not shying away from taking constant contact with other specialists or companies to continiously push towards gaining more insight will certainly accelerate the process.

There should be tons of different PM tools available with similar functions that Trello offers (just search for Project Management software via google). What Trello does offer is a kanban like card system for tasks which in turn requires task holders to update on their own progress throughout their progress. If you have a development team you could create several sheets for various developers and whatnot, to make the transition from one department to another easier to coordinate. In the end the effectiveness of PM tools relies heavily on how your users interact with them, it will certainly waste time if coworkers doesn't adapt it.
