Maybe I'm wrong, but i think mining is more interesting because it's really easy to do so.
I've a R9 290x with a medium hashrate (260khs) and I mine around 5/10 Grlc a day.

With a 1080ti you can go for 50/60 grlc per day.
That's a nice amount and you won't have spend money on it.

But, then again, I'm kind of noob and maybe i'm not thinking this right
