3  Other / Beginners & Help / VAT on Bitcoin in the UK - authorities change their mind on: December 06, 2013, 07:01:29 PM
Taken from this post by Tom Robinson on Reddit... http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1s8zak/vat_on_bitcoin_uk_tax_authorities_change_their/

Quote
BitPrice just had a very positive meeting with HMRC regarding VAT and Bitcoin. We attended with Marc Warne of Bittylicious, Eitan Jankelewitz of Sheridans solicitors and Michael Parsons.

We explained in detail what Bitcoin is and how it is used, following which they agreed that their categorisation of Bitcoin as: "a face-value voucher... likely 'face value vouchers'" is inaccurate. They will be rescinding this advice.

This is significant because under that definition, VAT would be due on the sale of Bitcoin, making the use of Bitcoin largely unviable in the UK. HMRC are to take legal advice on exactly how Bitcoin should be treated with regards to VAT, but the meeting was very positive and I would expect further good news in the new year.

This is potentially good news as many have been trying to trade Bitcoins legally but are getting stuck if they sell more than £77k worth in a year as they must then charge VAT (an extra 20% on the price, so no one would buy them).
4  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Cavirtex long waiting times on: December 06, 2013, 06:54:44 PM
With all of the recent coverage, a lot of exchanges are experiencing some big growing pains. Cavirtex, BTCE and Kraken have all been given a lot a stick recently on here and on Reddit.

A user on Reddit asked this question a number of weeks ago and the general consensus is that the return would be too little / not worth it.
6  Other / Beginners & Help / Anyone else having issues sending a USD wire transfer to BTC-E? on: December 06, 2013, 06:29:15 PM
I transferred USD via wire transfer from the UK on 27th Nov, 9 days ago (10 days in about 6hrs) and have sent in proof of payment. I've heard nothing from BTC-E support and sent them a message on Skype and still have heard nothing. I have sent USD like this twice before and it was slow - 5 days and 7 days - but 10 days is taking the Michael.

I have read about all of the problems they have been having recently and am now getting worried. Some people report 3+ weeks of no contact with BTC-E after sending a USD transfer.

With the amount of money they are currently making, how hard can it be to hire a few more support agents to deal with requests?
7  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: What's so bad about keeping money in an online wallet? on: December 06, 2013, 06:21:02 PM
You are a fool if you choose to keep your coins in an online wallet. There is no way on earth I would do that for two reasons. Firstly, risk of hacking is very high with most exchanges and as they are unregulated and not supported by any government or institution your money is gone forever. Secondly you avoid the temptation to panic buy / sell - something too many get caught up in because of the easy access to their coins.

Just spent the last hour going through this thread. Some amazing predictions here and how wrong some people were!
9  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Buying car with BITCOIN. world 1st!! on: December 06, 2013, 05:25:59 PM
That's seriously cool. I want to be able to buy a Lambo with Litecoin one day. Hopefully just about 3 of them.

My god the 360 second wait is annoying.
