1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Is Bitcoin really secure? on: April 13, 2018, 03:41:44 PM
If you're worried about someone hacking your wallet, the underlying cryptography for Bitcoin has been studied in detail, and is believed by experts to be secure. Assuming that you choose a strong password for your wallet, your Bitcoins should be safe from theft.

I also am fairly confident that some type of cryptocurrency will become widely used in the future, since it offers unique and useful features. But there is the possibility that some other currency will be developed that is superior.

Also, in the short term, Bitcoin is very volatile. So if you're looking for a safe investment, you're probably better off sticking to more conventional options.
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Buying Drugs with Bitcoin ? on: April 04, 2018, 04:36:52 AM
I get it , you are a journalist doing a story about how one uses the DNM and need to make a purchase ... good for you. Bitcoin is great for this
Lol no I am not, I am just curious as to why use Bitcoin and other crypto currencies. I have no idea what the process is like, and I have no desire to practice it myself but I do think its a big market that gives Bitcoin its high value. Am I wrong?
Most of bitcoins value still comes from speculation but yes, there is a growing market of inelastic demand from a circular economy of users who need bitcoin to survive.

Unfortunately, Bitcoin hasn't eaten much market share from the US dollar with arms trading and terrorism but it has been slowly eating away market share in these categories:

Drugs, gambling, prostitution, ransomeware, money laundering , capital flight.

This makes bitcoin somewhat of a blackmarket ETF where state governments heavily subsidize the value and premium of bitcoin by introducing regulation and laws which make bitcoin a valuable tool to route around these restrictions.

Therefore the best way to destroy much of the value of bitcoin is to make everything legalized and for all governments to become anarchistic. Thus Bitcoin is a hedge against anarchy and if you think governments and laws will continue to exist bitcoin has a bright future ahead.

6  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How Bitcoin mining works? on: February 15, 2018, 09:17:04 AM
What is Bitcoin mining?

Mining cryptocurrency is like mining gold or silver at a mountain. When you start digging into a mountain it's relatively easy but over time you will need more advanced equipment as the process gets dangerous and difficult. Mining cryptocurrency is basically solving mathematical problems and these problems get difficult with time. As the difficulty increases the miner would need fast and reliable technology.

How to start mining?

To start mining you need hardware (ASCI for Bitcoin and GPU for other cryptocurrencies) and electricity. Setting up a mining rig is expensive and requires cheap electricity so instead people join mining pools or mining clouds.

What is a mining cloud?

A mining cloud is website that offers mining services. It’s an alternative for people who would like to mine without worrying about hardware, electricity and maintenance. The most popular mining service is http://genesis-mining.com
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: If people stop buying bitcoin on: February 15, 2018, 09:05:49 AM
Let’s not assume everyone stops mining, but let’s say the largest miners who have dedicated warehouses full of miners stop mining. This would cause the network to come to a screeching halt, no blocks would be found until the block difficulty readjusts. This happens every 2 weeks. Bitcoin’s mining algorithm is about guessing random numbers, and hoping you get lucky. The mining difficulty indicates the threshold of a valid magic number. Any number less than the given difficulty is a valid block. Any number larger than the given difficulty is considered an invalid block by Bitcoin’s mining algorithm.

If all large miners were to stop mining, the mining difficulty would decrease (the magic number that determines block validity would actually increase), which means miners can now find a number larger than when large miners were mining and have the block be valid.
8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin can be hacked? on: February 15, 2018, 08:47:17 AM
Any hack would probably involve generating fake transactions, but since they are fake, they wouldn’t generate a solvable hash, so miners would spot them immediately, and plenty of people have tried and failed.

You can hack into a bank, but you can’t hack a blockchain.
9  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Dangerous ? on: February 15, 2018, 08:30:43 AM
Can't buy stuff. There aren't a lot of places where Bitcoins are accepted as payment. This is likely to change, but for now the average person will mostly buy Bitcoins as investment.
10  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: is there any easy way to buy and store bitcoin? on: February 15, 2018, 08:03:59 AM
The reason I like Coinbase is because it’s an easy, dummy-proof way to get into buying and selling Bitcoin, Ethereum and Litecoin. If you are not familiar with trading, this could be an easy to use alternative. You can keep an eye on it’s price index, and decide whether you want to invest or not. I have been using it for a couple of months now, and I’m pretty much satisfied with the online and mobile platform.
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Offline Wallets Vs Online Wallets on: February 15, 2018, 07:50:04 AM
Almost every wallet allows you to set a custom fee or to pick between cheap and fast. Multibit doesn't allow this, I recommend Electrum.
12  Economy / Speculation / Re: Do you think bitcoin has hit its peak? on: February 15, 2018, 07:25:13 AM
I don’t think so.

Consider the following:

Bitcoins market cap is still low when compared to traditional exchanges. This, to me, signifies a lot of growth potential.
Bitcoin can’t be shut down due to being decentralized. If any country outlaws it, there’ll always be another country to embrace it. US cracks down on market? China embraces it. You get the idea.
Bitcoin is an awesome way to store wealth. It’s secure (if you are smart), relatively easy to use. Even if it won’t become a commonly used currency, it’ll always be there as digital gold.
As common as it is, only an estimated 10–20 million people today use crypto. There’s several billion in the world. You can imagine how much it can grow.
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What Is Bitcoin? on: February 15, 2018, 07:14:31 AM
Bitcoins can be used to buy merchandise anonymously. In addition, international payments are easy and cheap because bitcoins are not tied to any country or subject to regulation. Small businesses may like them because there are no credit card fees. Some people just buy bitcoins as an investment, hoping that they’ll go up in value.
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin Will Kill The Income Tax on: February 14, 2018, 09:38:22 AM
Why would it be any different than current, under the table cash transactions (which make up a tiny portion of labor)? Why would there not be a system where employers paid direct deposit to your wallet, but not before withholding the proper amounts and sending it to the govt in BTC?
15  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How High Can Bitcoin's Price Go in 2018? on: February 14, 2018, 09:23:16 AM
Futures contracts for Bitcoin starting in December 2017, hedge funds planning on starting to get direct exposure to Bitcoin in 2018, possible Bitcoin ETFs approval so regular investors can buy Bitcoin through an ETF, the most popular mobile payments app Square just started Bitcoin integration trials yesterday and its competitors are sure to follow in 2018. And of course organic user adoption will continue to grow on its own. More nations will figure out regulations for Bitcoin, thereby formalizing Bitcoin’s acceptance in the legal structure, even if they do not outright recognize it as a legal currency as Japan has done. Expect a price of anywhere from $25k - $40k.
16  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to Make Money in Crypto on: February 14, 2018, 07:20:23 AM
Conclusion
Although not exhaustive, these are some of the most popular ways in which you can earn income online. As noted at the outset, there is no such thing as free Bitcoin and something will have to be given in return, whether it’s time or expertise or both. However, with an ever-expanding market the demand for Bitcoin expertise and Bitcoin related products means that there has never been a better time to get involved in Bitcoin.

18  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin can be hacked? on: February 12, 2018, 11:51:59 AM
Blockchain stores information across a network of personal computers permanently which distributes the information decentralizing the network. In a decentralized system, there are numerous computers that try to update the ledger, a collection of financial accounts that records every transaction which is ever breathing. To add a block of transactions to the chains, each person maintaining the ledger solves a math problem created by the cryptographic hash function which takes input of any size and creates an output of the fixed size. What makes Blockchain hack proof is the millions of users of Blockchain. They make it difficult for anyone to corrupt the network. Each block has a timestamp and a link to the previous block forming a chronological chain reinforced through cryptography ensuring the records cannot be altered by others. Due to the transactions needing multiple parties’ authorization before acceptance, Blockchain has a high degree of trust value
19  Other / Off-topic / Re: What wallets do you use? on: February 12, 2018, 11:44:28 AM
Digital Hardware Wallet
Digital hardware wallets make the process above significantly easier by automating laborious parts of the process. Digital hardware wallets essentially act like a self-contained mini computer that can communicate with your laptop/desktop via USB. This is convenient because you can move your Bitcoin from your software wallet to your hardware wallet, or directly to your hardware wallet address from your Bitcoin source. By doing so, you disconnect your private key from a digital device that is actively connected to the Internet, which significantly reduces the chance of a malicious hacker stealing control of your coins. At the same time, your Bitcoin access stays on a computer, so that if you choose to liquidate some of your funds, you don’t have to go to the bank to grab a piece of paper and enter the characters thereon into your computer to make a purchase.

The digital hardware wallet scene has two major players: Trezor and Ledger. Lucky for you, we have two lengthy reviews detailing everything you need to know about Trezor’s flagship wallet and the Ledger Nano S.
20  Economy / Speculation / Re: Is bitcoin like a Bubble ? on: February 12, 2018, 11:32:18 AM
Yes its a mega bubble and have to burst, but bitcoin will eventually continue to be used as a currency, at a way lower price.
