1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: NEM Official Thread - Redemption ends on 29 November[Updates&Discussion] on: November 26, 2014, 06:53:10 PM
Maybe there should be a paragraph on the website explaining what NEM actually is? Preferably in layman's terms so non-tech savvy people will know what it is.

E.g. "NEM is a cryptographic, decentralised payment system and economic ecosystem. Blah  blah no central bank blah blah rewarding users with transaction fees blah blah."

Also might be wise to mention the client is free? Just buzz words

I agree with you Clam. Bringing things down to layman will be key to NEMs continued succes.

Speaking of which, I recall there being talk of having our client compatible with feature phones/non-smart phones - so that our features can reach the masses. Anything new on this?

We're forming a SWARM team devoted to the promotion of NEM. We're looking members who are willing to do commenting and upvoting/liking articles, posts, videos etc. in order to promote NEM.

All interested, please send me email to the address nempromotion@gmail.com or PM with your email address and I'll list you! Please include your bitcointalk username in the post.
[/b]
For the record the SWARM team is not yet active, since there is no coin launched. We're forming the team now, so that we'll have it ready when the need comes.

Count me in, just sent you a pm

No DGEX. I not like

Of course we should go with DGEX!  It's a stable & well functioning exchange who was there when NXT (the most important 'ancestor' of NEM) hit the world.  They are reliable (could be a bit faster though) and shouldn't be left out when NEM hits exchanges.

I don't agree. DGEX NXT withdrawals are manually controlled by Graviton - If he dies today (god forbid), what happens to all of DGEX's funds? Maybe there is a security feature in place for DGEX not folding. But, I would prefer if the community used its own AUTOMATED exchange, to quickly process transactions.

"simple software for everyone" is better than "Aurora for every Islander"  Smiley

Software that could add value to NEM because can be used with NEM and related to real life
problems issues.
Building useful services around NEM and on top of NEM and
widespread distribution of the coin(platform) will guarantee its success.

I think it was on an episode of Let's Talk Bitcoin that were talking about the impact of feture phones, think old Nokia handsets running a very early version of Symbian. I also think they were talking about Venezulan fisherman using their new feature phones to call the shore to organise getting the fish to market and how this had had a dramatic impact on their lives because it saved time and brought in more money. The next step discussed was if you could actually trade at sea on your way back to shore, landing at the closest port where the fish you had caught had alreay been paid for. An SMS gateway for NEM that would offer something like the M-Pesa in Kenya and wouldn't require hi-tech just medium-tech

I agree with this outlook 100%. Allowing low-medium tech phones easy access to NEM would pave a pathway for NEM to reach the masses of this world... quickly.

How possible is this to implement?

I imagine that low-medium tech NEM users won't have direct access to the internet. Given this, if we were to implement an SMS gateway and transactions are handled via SMS, how does one keep their anonymity?.... Thinking off the bat then, users of feature phones would give up their identity, which is just fine.. we can confirm this with the success of M-PESA

Lets seriously consider this - this could propel this Movement Leaps and bounds

Is there a dedicated NEM forum yet?

our ideas/topics should be organized and easily sorted. This is needed, especially now.

Gold as a alternative currency, well good luck on that one, ever bought something with gold ? ever bought something with gold online ?

Gold is an excellent store of value but really sucks bad as a currency and that is why it has been replaced a long time ago with paper, you just don't carry gold around to pay for stuff, much too risky and as a merchant you just dont except gold as payment either, you need a lot of expertise to determine whether the gold is real or not and how much gold exactly of what purity your customer is offering you, and even if you have the expertise it consumes a lot of time to check all this, chances of getting conned are just too big. No gold really sucks bad as a currency.

Don't mean to bash anyone, but some of you are misinformed.

The world used to operate based on a Gold Standard, it actually was an excellent alternative currency - but only when things were "good". The reason for its failure, was because the standard performed/performs poorly during a crisis. Firstly, physical gold wasn't transferred between persons. Gold certificates were used as paper currency in the United States from 1882 to 1933. These certificates were freely convertible into gold coins. So you could "carry gold around and pay for stuff". Now it failed after World War II and is often blamed for prolonging the depression because during a crisis, persons HOARD their certificates/physical gold (of limited supply) which would halt the interchange of money. Production prices would rise, wages would fall, and no one could afford a thing. Adherence to the gold standard prevented the Federal Reserve from expanding the money supply to stimulate the economy, in comes fiat. So stimulation here was a good thing (whenever is it not? :-p).

Bitcoin in essence is the cyber version of the gold standard. It operates based on the same principles, easily transferable, limited supply. Its only benefit right now is that it can be transferred easily between hands and is anonymous. Now if bitcoin were the main currency of the world, it would operate the same way as gold, but would fail horribly during a crisis as persons would hoard their bitcoin, and it would be the Great Depression II.

As a side note, don't view bitcon as taking over the USD and operating as the worlds currency, that would be naive. If you view bitcoin as an alternative to Gold/a store of $$, then you see its value. If bitcoin were to capture 5% of golds marketcap that would be $200billion. We aren't even close to that yet.

Awesome work,

Have you considered using a neural networks to make predictions on the future price?

you can use the same inputs:
number of addresse
transcations/min
current price
volume
or form of data

I have done these kinds of analyses in the past, I'll give it a look at
11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Bitcoin a fool's Gold Standard? on: January 29, 2014, 01:23:26 AM
Can anyone provide a strong rebutal to this article?

http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2014/01/22/bitcoin-a-fools-gold-standard/?_php=true&_type=blogs&_r=0

For me the future of bitcoin doesn't involve it being the world's currency but it being a store of value - similar to gold. Gold is worth >$4trillion. If bitcoin were to capture 5% of it's market, it's value would be >$200billion. If anyone can soundly explain how bitcoin of limited supply would positively-act in a crisis, then I'll be convinced bitcoin should be the world's #1 currency. It's my understanding that during a crisis owners of a commodity with limited supply, tend to hoard, causing spending to stop and deflation to take place.

Look forward to the communities comments

Peace

Can this be removed from the Abstract of the Whitepaper: http://wiki.nxtcrypto.org/wiki/Whitepaper:Nxt

Quote
"While many are not comfortable with the specific initial distribution of the genesis block, when asked: "How would you solve problem with scam accusations according to "unfair" distribution NXT to 73 big stakeholders?", BCNext answered: "This problem can not be solved. Even if we had a million stakeholders the rest seven billion people would call this unfair. A world with the money can not be perfect".[1]
The fundamental improvement of NXT is Transparent Forging. This is the key innovation of NXT that allows it to process thousands of transactions per second."

Yes the initial distribution is an issue but can it not be included in the abstract - Abstract should provide a brief synopsis of NXT and its features, not a brief synopsis on Nxts most controversial issue.
