1  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: .dat file question on: March 03, 2018, 03:10:17 PM
1. If I encrypt my wallet but before doing so save the unencrypted .dat to a usb stick, will that .dat still remain password free even after I encrypt the wallet on my PC or will it also become encrypted?

The wallet file on usb stick will be password free. Encryption only affects ("locks") the wallet active.

2. Is there a way for a hacker to steal my .dat via virus and if so how common/easy is it to do?

If your device/storage is compromised, there are various ways for someone to gain access and retrieve your files. This is why it's important to protect your wallet as much as possible - encryption is one of those precautions.

3. Will I still be able to stake my coins if I encrypt my wallet (not as important)

I recently had cmd pop up randomly and close in a second so I disconnected my PC from the internet immediately and am writing this post because I want to be safe, my wallet says that my coins are still there but it's not synced now so I'm not sure how accurate it is.. I also did a deep scan and my computer found 4 suspicious files. So you could say I'm shitting myself.

If anyone who knows about these questions can answer I will appreciate it thanks
Bitcoin wallets don't stake... but yes, encryption doesn't prevent you from staking coins for those that do. So that's not a reason to not encrypt.
If you suspect your devices might be compromised, I'd recommend you clean that device and transfer out to new wallet. Even with encryption, if the hacker also gained your seed, he could just recover the wallet elsewhere and access your coins

Thanks this helped me a lot!!
2  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / .dat file question on: March 03, 2018, 02:37:20 PM
Hi everyone

I'm a bit paranoid about my computer being hacked and someone stealing my .dat file and hence stealing my funds. But at the same time I'm also paranoid about encrypting my wallet because I have this fear that I will set a password and then when I go to enter it it will say wrong password even though it's the right one even though it seems irrational

So the questions I have are:

1. If I encrypt my wallet but before doing so save the unencrypted .dat to a usb stick, will that .dat still remain password free even after I encrypt the wallet on my PC or will it also become encrypted?

2. Is there a way for a hacker to steal my .dat via virus and if so how common/easy is it to do?

The wallet is TokenPay and the coin is TokenPay also

I have checked their block explorer and the coins are in my address its just that their not showing up so I cant access them despite entering the seed and establishing the address in the wallet successfully
What do you mean by "they are not showing up"?
Do the addresses show up in your wallet when you type in the seed, but not the coins?
Or does the seed generate a different set of addresses entirely?
If it generates a different set of addresses then you're typing in the wrong seed.
BIP 39 seeds are in small letters throughout with just one space between them. Make sure the syntax is correct and you're not misspelling any word.

According to this guide here when the wallet is initialised there are 2 addresses shown that are not derived from the seed. Did you send coins to any of those addresses?

Thank you for the reply. What I mean was that the addresses show and they are the correct ones its just that the balance is still 0 dispute this so its the correct address but the coins aren't reflecting. As for the sending of coins I haven't touched the coins since I received them they have just been sitting in my wallet and I have even got some staking bonuses too. But cant see them or the staking bonuses anymore

I'm just hoping that I dont need the .dat file and just the seed because I've been told that as long as I have the seed I will be able to access my coins anywhere so I didnt bother to save a .dat file along with the seed

Hi guys this isn't specific to BTC but another cryptocurrency sorry if its posted in the wrong place

So basically a couple of days ago my computer got a virus and began doing the BSOD (windows 10), So I shift + f8 on start up and it then proceeds to give me a few options, I decided to go with the option that allowed me to delete every non native application and just leave the apps that the PC comes with. So after this my PC, now rid of most of all the software and apps I installed runs fine. I also downloaded malware-bytes and avg and did a deep scan on both and they successfully cleared all suspicious files on my PC.

So now the help bit. I had a wallet with some alt coins in it but I cant find the .dat file as my PC has obviously removed this app while cleaning it up, however I do have the private seed/recovery phrase. So I re-installed the wallet and clicked on import wallet, entered my seed and it said it was successful. However it is now not showing any coins at all. What do I do? can I get my coins back? Pls help or give suggestions

TLDR: Lost .dat file but have seed what do?

*Also I dont know if my computer deleted the .dat file or not but I cant find it and don't know where to look for it

Pls help!
