I think btc will always remain dominant because it is widely used and accepted already.
But there are also a number of good alt coins that are seeming to go that direction (eth, loyal coin, etc).
Alt coins that are not as expensive as btc but offers unique utilities.

Before investing in alts, you have to research well, read their white paper and check out the communities for discussions to know more. There are a lot of promising alts, you just have to dig deeply.
