Hey Talk Merit,

Just wanted to say sorry about this post. Only after you commented did I realize how useless of a post it was.

The reason I posted it (believe it or not) was because I've had several questions from facebook friends asking confused questions about the merit system (which you've stated several times yourself is not that complicated.)

So I thought there must be some people who didn't want to do their own research... and since I'd written up the guide I may as well share it.

As I said in my post, I would delete it if i could but apparently I can't do that.

I'll try to right my wrong by shutting the f** up and just try to learn from the more senior members.

Have a great day,

MXgirl

Nope, there is no need to STFU but you might get a better response if you posted some of your own stuff and not merely copy and pasted someone else's stuff. We want original and constructive posts, where you went the extra mile to create your own information, not simply someone else's information.

Yes, you might have thought that you are making it easy for lazy people, but that is not helpful at all. If they are too lazy to read and do some of their own research, then they should also not be rewarded by this system in future.

The sMerit will go to original content, which adds value to the forum.  Wink

Tip : Avoid the merit subject, it is not a popular topic at the moment. There are too many people begging for it and other people getting pd#*@off by this.

Thank you for your kind words! I will take your advice... Yes after this I can see it is a sore subject. I look forward to contributing original, helpful content as my knowledge grows.

Appreciate the advice!

So I see tons of people asking this question and so I wanted to share the answer after doing much research on the subject.

MERIT EXPLAINED FOR NEWBS!!

The Merit system was introduced in January of 2018.  According to forum Administrator Theymos, "The merit system was done to increase the quality of the posts and to prevent the spam."  According to Theymos it does this in two ways:

1. Forcing people to post high-quality stuff in order to rank up. If you just post garbage, you will never get even 1 merit point, and you will therefore never be able to put links in your signature, etc.
2. Highlighting good posts with the "Merited by" line.

So along side activity all users now have a merit score and people need both a certain activity level and a certain merit score in order to reach higher ranks.

6  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Solutions to get rid of cartels on: April 01, 2018, 01:43:57 PM
I'm kind of new to crypto, but i have a question.

I know that mining cartels are a huge problem, so much so that regular people can't mine anymore.

I was wondering why can't they introduce some kind of limit of how much work one node can do per hour? Wouldn't that massively aid the problem?

I'm no programmer, so I'd really appreciate hearing thoughts about what solutions people are coming up with to solve this problem. Is it unsolvable??

Nobody the network doesn't know how much work one miner or a pool of miners does...(obviously, the pool can make a more or less accurate estimation about the work done by it's members because they allow people to submit shares at a much lower difficulty to estimate their hashrate). This is information that isn't broadcasted to the network. Only when a miner finds a block whose sha256d hash of the header is under the current target, it is broadcasted.
Given a certain difficulty, the amount of hashrate a miner (or pool) has just determines the odds of him finding a valid block header.
The network's hashrate you see in (for example) bitcoin core's information is just an estimation based on the difficulty and the number of blocks found during the last 24? hours.

In other words: there is no way to limit the amount of work... A person with a single S9 can have a lucky streak and find 3 or 4 blocks in a year, while a person with 100 S9's can have a dry spell and doesn't find a block at all during a year...

Blocks can be broadcasted using different nodes, so if a pool wants to hide their identity, they can use a new coinbase address for every block, don't add identifying information to the blocks they're solving and use a new node for every block they broadcast. This way nobody will be able to tie a block to a pool, and nobody will be able to estimate the pool's hashrate.

EDIT: the text in green was added after i suddenly realised the OP was talking about pool mining, and the pool operators will have a rather good estimation about their user's hashrate... They just don't have to share this information with anybody else if they don't want to...

Thanks for the explanation. I won't lie I read it 4 times and its still complicated to me, but I was hoping for an explanation like this so I can start further research. Thank you
7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Solutions to get rid of cartels on: April 01, 2018, 01:22:52 PM
This isn't as easy as it seems because tracking the work done by a miner on the node is not easy, if it's not impossible, and without these miners transactions would not go through.

ok well that makes sense. I'm no programmer so I didn't know it was impossible to track nodes...
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Should I buy TRON or ETH? on: April 01, 2018, 01:21:44 PM
If i'm looking to make my first crypto purchase, which one would you suggest buying and why? I love ETH because it's established but still not as expensive as BTC, but I also am hearing about TRX (TRON) nonstop...

If lets say I have $500 to start with, what should I buy and why?

of course TRON price is cheaper than ethereum.
but, in growth opportunities ethereum is superior to tron. I think you can buy eth and tron, you can buy 1 ethereum and the rest for tron. I think that's fair.

You should not buy the cheap altcoins mate. There are many many potential altcoins must be chosen while you are investing on any altcoins. Please look into the marketplace capital and potential expectation of the market bro.
TRX will be cheaper than ethereum but ethereum captures more than 20 percent of market place volume like bitcoin capturing the market. These kind of high volume coin will be survive in the market for long time.

Thats a really good point. I did not know that ETH was 20% of the market!! I need to do more research.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Should I buy TRON or ETH? on: April 01, 2018, 01:20:32 PM
I would prefer buying ethereum than tron for the mere fact and as what OP said, it is more established and known than that of tron. Although I have heard a lot about tron, I would still choose and prefer the safest coin to invest instead of some coin which is still not that established yet.

So I guess it's a question of if I want to invest or if I want to gamble... because we know that BTC and ETH has value, its a good investment like gold... but If I want to roll the dice and see what I get, I can try tron. You think thats a good way to look at it?
10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Should I buy TRON or ETH? on: April 01, 2018, 01:19:11 PM
I just don't see the appeal of tron.
It's a completely speculative coin that has absolutely no market value or market penetration yet.
Yeah, you can say, some day it will be developed and then...wow!
But the crypto world has matured beyond that.
Especially after the last 3 months, people want substantial companies rather than speculative ones.

Now think of eth:
HUGE market penetration and brand awareness
The BIGGEST crypto network in existence
continuous and ACTIVE development
Is entirely fungible (almost as fungible as btc)
Is starting to be used as valuation of all crypto in hand with btc.

So which one is a more valuable company?
The answer should be obvious.

This was one of the most helpful posts I've seen. If I had any merit to give you, I would give you. Thank you good sir. So only in the last 3 months by that you mean that the market starting dropping?
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Should I buy TRON or ETH? on: April 01, 2018, 01:17:13 PM
I will recommend to you to stay away until cryptocurrency market is in bear market. It drop much lower and your investments will bleed altogether.
I see Bitcoin dropping much lower and it will reflect on altcoin market as well.

Good sir, are we not in a bear market now? Can you explain to a newbie Smiley
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Should I buy TRON or ETH? on: April 01, 2018, 01:13:57 PM
Ethereum has no comparison with TRON as ethereum is a well established coin and TRON have huge volatility and it drops significantly from its high. Go with ETH and buy now and you will get best returns in very short time as market will revive any time now.

Thanks for the advice. so you recommend buying and holding ETH? I really need to get a wallet...
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Should I buy TRON or ETH? on: April 01, 2018, 01:11:06 PM
Better option will be ethereum, because more and more projects based on ethereum, which makes it more and more popular. And the most important thing, eth will be more profitable

thank you. You could probably say the same thing about NEO though, right?

Hoping that this is not an April Fool's joke, can someone answer me the following questions:

1. There is a formula for calculating fMerit. But how is Politeness, Virtue, Coins.etc calculated? Are there specific formulas?
2. What is the difference between sMerit and fMerit?

I was afraid to ask this myself... but since a senior member is asking I have the same question (please Wink I read the post carefully, but still don't understand the difference between smerit and fmerit.

Good day sir Cheesy
15  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: ICO? LEGIT OR SCAM? on: April 01, 2018, 12:53:29 PM
Hey Smiley

so for sure do your research. There are a number of red flags to look for, including:

1. does the company need to be on the blockchain?
2. did you check out their management on linkedin?
3. did you reach out to customer service and see how they respond?
4. is there any news about them (podcasts, etc.)
5. does their white paper make sense? If you're confused, it's probably a no-go.

But I saw this vid called "spotting ICO scams" highly recommend u watch it before investing.

20  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Girls in crypto? Guys and Girls weigh in. on: April 01, 2018, 09:22:16 AM
So i'm kind of wondering why it seems like there aren't many girls who are a part of the crypto community. So me personally, (yes I am a female) I got pushed into crypto by accident and I never ever would have investigated it on my own if it didn't fall into my lap.

I'm very interested in bringing more women into the crypto community, 1. because I think its a worthy cause and 2. it can only help make crypto mainstream.

Most of my girlfriends say "It sounds really complicated" and "it's not really my thing."

What barriers do you see to women becoming involved in the crypto community? I want to hear your ideas, so I can start making a plan to break down those barriers.

I want to hear both from my ladies out there, and from men too! What would you like to see done to bring more women into crypto? A youtube channel? More women-only forums and chats? What else? Lets take the first step and have a conversation Wink

Thanks <3
