1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: 8th Alt coin thread. Or what to do now that asics are all over the place. on: March 13, 2019, 02:37:23 AM

If the switch gives one good month for gpus it means two good months a year.
If your gear is paid off it is viable.

If the switch gives 45 days for gpus it means three good months a year.
If ETH did the same and alternates ie winter and summer for ETH spring and fall for monero

You would get four to six months a year of decent gpu mining.
I do not code but two algo tweaks a year are not impossible to do.

XMR dev said they'll fork every 3 months from now on, so even better:
https://beincrypto.com/monero-asic-rebels-have-won-the-battle-but-can-they-win-the-war

"However, the fork’s effect proved to be short-lived. In February 2019 ASIC-miners were responsible for 85 percent of all Monero coins mined, according to the nonce analysis performed by a researcher known as MoneroCrusher.
After the publication, Monero’s lead developer Riccardo Spagni promised to fork the network once every 90 days to resist ASICs domination."

@ stubo hard to write perfectly clear.  they  won't stop sales  but they will slow them a lot.  with gaps of time between sales.

remember  the workers are in china    so they may be laid off and on at the companies will.

As for rival companies   GMO  is the only new one  and they have done everything wrong so far.

Here is their newest mistake

In case you haven't found this:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7TLP3MRS8A

A YouTube interview with GPUHoarder that I think is worth watching on the general topic of FPGA's.

Disclaimer:  I think Seth suffers from ADD and his ego has yet to realize that he is not the "content."  He winks, he grins, he interjects topics to show off his own knowledge -- in other words, he doesn't conduct a very good interview.  The crypto space desperately needs an interviewer who can get to the point, ask questions, and keep the spotlight on the person being interviewed.  But I digress.  Seth is a 'shallowist' whose reach truly exceeds his grasp.  Which is okay, he just needs to keep his ego in check more.  Maybe he'll eventually figure that out.

Anyone who thinks the GPUHoarder/Senseless FPGA, FPGAland.com, endeavor is a scam will be proven wrong.

Happy 4th everyone!

I don't think GPUHoarder,Ohgoditsagirl,KJS are scammers.

Drawfminer was a scammer.

I think  moving to fpga's is a losing move.
I think moving to asics is a losing move.

I think the fail was in the coin developers not the gear builders (other then nvidia making mining cards)

My issue with fpga is it is worthless for resale as are asics.

fpga is worse then an asic as it will be replaced  by better gear.

gpus were and are all over the world and earn money.  millions of people have them  maybe more like 100's of millions   killing this widespread base off is a lower move

My 1080tis still earn 1.75 usd a day and burn 5kwatts or 90 cents   which = 85 cent pure profit   and since the cards are paid off and have 27 months on warranty.

I simply can't justify fpgas for lots of us.

Although I would love to have a 16 fpga  beast from KJS

I agree Phil, GPU is best.
Devs failed by not adjusting the algo or coming up with better algos.

BTW....

Worst = Gigabyte (the Auros however are doing fine).

If I could turn back time, avoid lower end Gigabytes GPUs.

Those are some expensive fans. Some cheap ones on taobao: https://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.29.5f9944eexVB9fB&id=538143407251&ns=1&abbucket=18#detail

Thanks - will check them out

Some of my MSI RX470 Gaming fans started to fail as well.. where y'all order fans in the US? I guess I'll check Ebay.

Edit:
This is the only one I found on ebay, $26 a pair, but it takes a long time to get it from China.. you guys knkow any other place?
Radeon RX570 MSI RX470 ARMOR Graphics Card Cooling fan cooler 2pcs http://r.ebay.com/qitM0N

Some of these might fit: https://s.taobao.com/search?q=MSI+gaming+x%E9%A3%8E%E6%89%87&imgfile=&js=1&stats_click=search_radio_all%3A1&initiative_id=staobaoz_20180705&ie=utf8

Try to search "Brand Name" "Model name" 风扇 on taobao, in this case MSI Gaming X 风扇.

Loads of cheap stuff there, like $0.30 ethernet cat 6 cables, $2.50 risers. It does deliver quickly to Hong Kong, but I've tried sending stuff to Malaysia it takes 2-3 weeks.

Thanks, but how do I switch that site to English?

Any of you buying this FPGA card?

when you have a stable setup make a disk image of the OS. that way if you blow the OS or drivers away just load the good image back on and good to go.

i use macrium reflect free. saved me a lot of grief many times. both miner rigs and my other computers. anytime i change something and it works i make a new image.

https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

Additionally you could also try the built-in tools in Windows 7 and 10. On Windows 10 you can create a System Image on any external hard disk that can be used to image an other computer using the repair and recovery tools found in any Windows 10 installation DVD or usb-stick.

This method might work as a quick way to deploy Windows installations too. Remember that you may have to re-license and activate Windows, if it's not already licensed on the target computer. Otherwise you will get an activation notice.

Create system image:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10/how-to-create-a-system-image-in-windows-10/84fa6683-e3ac-4e93-9139-368af9267869

Restore system image:
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-update/how-to-restore-a-windows-10-system-image-to-an/e20992ca-5641-4f7c-bb09-3895d0732162

ive known those built in windows tools exist but ive never actually tried them. im so used to reflect, its so reliable and ive been using it for so long, that i never bothered with anything else. being free for personal use helps of course Smiley

never thought to build a  baseline windows miner image. good idea, that would save some time with all the updates and tweaks that need to be done for deploying a typical new rig.

i wonder how well an image would tolerate a chipset change, like from B250 to Z370 or something.

+1 on Macrium Reflect Free, easy to use, boot from USB stick, restore the image fast. You can also mount and browse to image files.
The Windows built in image backup thingy was pretty cumbersome and unreliable, I haven't use it for years, cos once you try Reflect you never go back.

I am playing with a smaller coin. Mining and holding it.

Care to share that coin here philip? It's just us bitcointalk forum miners here and i'm sure we won't make much of a dent in your profitability.

You know what they say, sharing is caring  Grin

Only 1.7 million forum members might see it Wink

I think a fresh start would be nice, since half the year is almost gone.
I vote for a new 8th alt coin thread  Wink

Is this scam or real?
https://asicminer.co/shop/asicminer-equihash
I saw it somebody post it on the zcash forums:
https://forum.z.cash/t/let-s-talk-about-asic-mining/27353/1906
At first glance it seemed like a scam to me, but a few people over there say it's for real, they have sha256 too.

only people that have zero understanding of the economics of mining will buy it.

most likely it is a losing guess if you buy it even if it is real.

It will be forked to death

Of course, I wouldn't buy it even if it was real, I was just wondering if if it's a legit company that already shipped asics or just pure scam.

Have any of you guys heard what the various developers of Equihash based coins  are planning to do in regard to the Bitmain Equihash Asic that's shipping in ~6-7 weeks? I read a rumor that BTG said they would fork, but I haven't heard anything (yet) from others.

It seems like most of the Zcash community wants to change algo to kill off ASICs just like Monero did, but Zooko and co is sitting on the fence.. they don't say either yes or no to ASICs yet.. well they kinda say yes by not saying NO.. the zcash community is pretty upset, a lot of people will abandon the coin if there's no algo change.

Ongoing discussion on the zcash forum an also on github:

Honestly if i had 40k to spend on expanding mining and you had the room, i would instead spend it on solar power... I have been shopping around local here to build a small solar farm on my property that i have all my rigs currently. Here in Florida you cant get a credit on solar unless you produce over a certain xxxx amount. So i have been shopping around and there is a solar panel manufacture called Sonali Solar in Miami, FL that quoted me some pretty amazing prices...

Pallet: 25 panels
305watt panels
$0.46/watt pricing

Small Container: 250 panels
305watt panels
$0.31/watt pricing

Or

A 50,400 watt complete system package

180 x panels
6 x 10.1KW 240vac inverters
Unirac 180 panel kit
cabling for kit setup

They priced me $33,675.40 shipped to my door, which comes out to $0.67 per watt if i do the install myself.

Right now im just trying to find out what permits and coding i would need to meet to install such a system, because if i could cut my $1500/month electric bill down to near $0 mining with the gear i already have, then that is a huge step in the right direction in the future of mining. Right now profits are a bit on the low side, so saving on electric seems more important in my book.... I could ROI on the solar in no time, since i would have to expand to use up the full 50kw in solar.

A 50KW solar system isn't going to cut your electric bill to 0.. you would need a 100KW+ system for that.
You can calculate it here: https://pvwatts.nrel.gov

My electric bill is around $600/mo, I'm in south FL and pay around 10 cents/kwh.
A 50KW system generates around 6400kwh/mo so that would bring my bill to 0.

For you to bring your $1500 power bill to 0 you would need a 120KW solar system. That generates about 1500kwh/mo.
Of course it also depends on how much you pay per kwh, but since you're also in FL it should be similar.
