Report to moderator
>bitcoin://16rpY3LAf7kQFHzmMtB71eXTTTDLG5AWy3/  (Bitcoin URI handler is here

exactly - if you are on a device and have a bitcoint client --- this works. if someone is on a device that doesnt have a client - it doesnt work. either way, these should be clickable links so they can facilitate the mainstream usability of bitcoins.

>Introducing some privately owned domain into decentralised currency URI scheme, whether standard or not, does not look very appealing. Nice try with a community infiltration attack though...

http://blockexplorer.com/address/15NpyCrWkTMzTYRTuUrQhB4K2MUspPjeTi

who owns blockexplorer.com? people link to it all the time --- i tried to contact them but there's no contact on the site, and their whois information is obfuscated.

so how is this:
http://coin.is/15NpyCrWkTMzTYRTuUrQhB4K2MUspPjeTi much different?

seriously i dont know and thats why im asking. who would need to own "coin.is" to make it not an infiltrating attack on the community? a non profit organization? a publicly traded corporation? a trust in the name of --- all coin hashes? i'm all ears and up for making bitcoin usable by everyone on earth, by whatever means necessary. help?
2  Other / Meta / Re: [Forum PULL] Support for bitcoin URLs on: June 11, 2011, 04:15:34 PM
link them all over to blockexplorer.com --- anything to make that plain text clickable without having to install a browser extension is going to help in bringing wider adoption to bitcoins... just my two cents..

1. bitcoin:1NS17iag9jJgTHD1VXjvLCEnZuQ3rJED9L?amount=x4X7

and

2. bitcoin:/400/16rpY3LAf7kQFHzmMtB71eXTTTDLG5AWy3/

----

http://bit.coin.is/1NS17iag9jJgTHD1VXjvLCEnZuQ3rJED9L?amount=x4X7
or
http://bit.coin.is/400/16rpY3LAf7kQFHzmMtB71eXTTTDLG5AWy3

but i'll route both of them through the 'coin.is' domain

>I see no need for this, and I'd prefer if you'd not volunteer my money to be spent in this way.  No need for collective phrases such as "the community".  If you think it's essential, I recommend starting a thread with a bounty for getting the domain setup correctly.

speaking of idiotic --- i thought that the namecoin folks were actually trying to acquire the .bit top level domain from the new ICAAN application process --- that is not what they are doing --- my mistake. apologies ---- i'm new here.

to get back on topic with bitcoin.com --- someone will grab that domain name and do whatever they want with it ---

8  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcents? on: June 10, 2011, 02:05:29 AM
> Keep in mind that the base unit (1 shatoshi or 0.00000001 BTC) is 10 nanocoins. It makes no sense to talk about 1 nanobitcoin. Talking about 10-990 nanobitcoins would be engineering notation.

oh - thats right. actually there's no such thing as a gigacoin either because at most the entire economy will consist at 2030 or whatever, from what i understand, of only 21 megacoins.

>My problem with this is it makes you think to do the conversion.  I know more than one American that thinks milli means millionth not thousandth. That is partially why I think the BCx nomenclature makes sense as it specifically states how many decimals of a full bitcoin you are using. 1 BC9 is a little easier to envision than 1 nanocoin and likewise a BC3 is easier to visualize the fraction than millicoin... at least for me.

i agree that 1 BC3 is rather elegant notation... i think that more then one notation will exist ----- 'let me give you 3 BC9s for that' doesn't exactly roll off thing tongue... it does sounds very futuristic though... its kind of hard to think where the currency will go but perhaps there would be spans of decades where people are just working with one denomination for most transactions...

lets say that in bitcoin's next rally it triples in value again... then

b-coins could even out around US$100
d-coins would then be around US$10
c-coins would be US$1
m-coins would be US$0.10
μ-coin would then be US$0.01

no need to talk about n-coins yet.

then in maybe... i have no idea --- a year or 5 years or ... a month - i dont know -- there's another huge rally and...

b-coins could even out around US$1000
d-coins would then be around US$100
c-coins would be US$10
m-coins would be US$1
μ-coin would then be US$0.10
n-coin would then be US$0.01

--- wait that doesn make sense --- someone smarter than me will figure this out. .. i'm tired. good discussion here though!! i'm going to go search for the illusive 22nd megacoin..

no need to talk about n-coins yet.

I'm a former flight attendant with thousands of miles in Star Alliance (Lufthansa) mostly - but also thousands in One World and SkyTeam.

Anyone interested? We can use clear coin escrow
I'm new to bitcoin - is there already some place I can liquify these assets?

10  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Earn 131BTC or 1BTC for getting shops/organisations to accept Bitcoin! on: June 09, 2011, 11:56:40 PM
Um --- what's the current status of this bounty?

My startup (http://here.st) is wiring up the internet street address TLD - started by me setting up a social network for the apartment building I live in at http://345.eldert.St over a year ago --- anyway, people want to pay their rent online but paypal and credit card have fees that are too high. Bitcoin would be perfect.

So - do apartment buildings and landlords accepting rent with bitcoin count?

Another need we were identifying was all the brick and mortar shops and restaurants that are cash only to avoid credit card charges... Previously we were thinking that setting up no fee ACH echeck transactions could address this and the rent issue as well - but in comparison bitcoin is much simpler to implement ---

Our startup is not funded - there are 4 of us - we were going to setup a kickstarter.com project to raise funds ---- but if there is direct interest from the bitcoin community to help back our efforts - we could wire up hundreds of thousands of brick and mortar merchants... Is there a kickstarter for bitcoin? Coinstarter?

11  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcents? on: June 09, 2011, 08:45:14 PM
>Hence, I propose that instead of talking in bitcents we encourage the use of millicoins, microcoins, and nanocoins.  That way the entire system relies on a single three-order grouping.

+1

this is a very important discussion --

the root concept of 'bitcoin' is 'coin' - the monetary element, not bit - the generic data element --- using prefixes around 'coin' makes the most sense.

thankfully the international systems (SI) of units specifies twenty prefixes that go +/- 10 places --- so if 'bit' is the root coin value, you can express the following:

bitcoin = bcoin = 1                    = a whole bitcoin

decicoin = dcoin = 0.1                = a tenth of a bitcoin
centicoin = ccoin = 0.01         = a hundredth of a bitcoin
millicoin = mcoin =  0.001         = a Thousandth of a bitcoin
microcoin = μcoin = 0.000001      = a Millionth of a bitcoin
nanocoin = ncoin  = 0.000000001 = a Billionth of a bitcoin

now take that in the other direction and you can talk about equating bitcoins at higher scales as well - handy for summing up countries national debt for example:

decacoin =    dacoin = 10 bitcoin = Ten bitcoins
hectocoin = hcoin    = 100 bitcoin = 1 Hundred bitcoins
kilocoin =    kcoin   = 1,000 bitcoin = 1 Thousand bitcoins
megacoin = Mcoin = 1,000,000 bitcoin = 1 Million bitcoins
gigacoin =    Gcoin   = 1,000,000,000   bitcoin = 1 Billion bitcoins

standard calculators could be adapted like http://www.bit-calculator.com/ to make all these conversons effortless---

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SI_prefix
The International System of Units specifies twenty SI prefixes:

using this for national elections is one thing --- but going down to the example of an organization voting on executive members --- or inside universities where club members vote on how to spend the budget --- or --- i dont really know... a general purpose voting system based on cryptography is not an idea that should be easily tossed away...
13  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin needs to be easier on: June 09, 2011, 07:57:01 PM
if a bounty could be put together this could happen really quick. i'm going to the NYC bitcoin meetup on saturday and will talk to folks about putting something together --- i've got the address http://coin.is and would like to set something up thats dead simple so people can reference bitcoins like http://coin.is/1Gy8cVUKykZqQ5MmCyKMCi7ExwY8NvgeLA --- do escrows with 3rd party services like http://clear.coin.is/1Gy8cVUKykZqQ5MmCyKMCi7ExwY8NvgeLA such as the clearcoin app by gavin --- and have a 'coin wallet in the cloud' with a datastore.

the debut of apple's iCloud will make syncronizing wallets between phones and computers effortless --- from my understanding icloud can be accessed regardless of what platform device is being used --- there are also really great efforts to make cloud storage systems that are more in line with the bitcoin philosophy such as http://camlistore.org/

as for getting names behind it --- i think that could be taken care of --- for starters the Icelandic government has announced an initiative for setting up iceland as a datahaven for freedom of expression ( http://immi.is ) --- so while i know the bitcoin community doesn't generally look for government endorsement -- it could come from there....

i work out of a NYC startup coworking space ( http://generalassemb.ly ) --- lots of big name sponsors and investors there --- shouldnt be too hard to find ones that would be up for putting their name on a site like 'coin.is'  -- or whatever -- what kind of endorsement would a) the bitcoin community appreciate/not get upset with --- and b) would the general population want

i really dont know much about the answer to a) as i'm new to this community --- so would really be good to get some consensus going ---- we could pass around a survey to get more feedback about what the 'early adopter' community wants --- and then do another one for the 'late-adopters' who are now coming into the fold and looking for usability.

feel free to get in touch: sean@generalunited.co

(i feel like i'm spamming the forums a bit with this 'coin.is' stuff --- just trying to put it out there - apologies to anyone that feels spammed )
14  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin for Iceland on: June 09, 2011, 06:56:00 PM
this is a great idea.

iceland is trying to position itself as a safe haven for internet freedom with the Icelandic Modern Media Initiative/Institute @ http://immi.is --- additionally they are trying to market themselves as the greenest place to host data because servers run on thermal generated power and can be cooled from the cold climate --- plus they have lots of legal protections in place. plus their top level domain is '.is' which is declarative and helpful for providing a definitive resource locator / URL for bitcoin address hashes.

I have the domain http://coin.is which i had some plans to use for something else before i found out about bitcoin ---- it could be used as the best way to market bitcoin to the public as well as a server in the protected 'cloud' of iceland for APIs and other technologies client applications could use to make a better user experience w/o desktop software.

http://coin.is/1Gy8cVUKykZqQ5MmCyKMCi7ExwY8NvgeLA could be the simplest usage

for referencing to entities:
http://name.coin.is/generalunited

for sending messages encrypted to that key to a coin holder:
http://mail.coin.is/1Gy8cVUKykZqQ5MmCyKMCi7ExwY8NvgeLA

for returning a value of a coin:
http://value.coin.is/1Gy8cVUKykZqQ5MmCyKMCi7ExwY8NvgeLA

for providing services on top of coins, :

oohhh--- thats very cool. makes a lot of sense --- so the short url can be linked to an address--- and the address can change, but the name stays the same? because people use different addresses for different things right? again, im new to this.

(edit - error removed)
16  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Should we buy bitcoin.com ? on: June 09, 2011, 05:30:34 PM
i'm new to bitcoin - but with the increased value of the actual bitcoins, grabbing bitcoin.com should be rather trivial for the community - someone should just grab it. offer $500 - that could work, if not, offer $5000 --- or shesh - offer bitcoins - thats much more valuable then dollars already anyway....

that said - .bit is a great idea and definitely in line with what i gather is the spirit of the community. again, with the increased value of bitcoins the community should be able to float the $150k application fee/registration for a new top level domain and the $25k yearly maintenance fee.

personally, i'm on a mission to bend the web to be more understandable to regular people - from kids to old folks --- and am using ".is" - the top level domain of iceland - to accomplish this.

so i picked up http://coin.is --- which can reference http://bit.coin.is as well... or any other varient on the the cryptocurrency coin concept --- such as name.coin.is/ etc...

basically 'bitcoin' just redefined 'coin' at the root of it all --- do average people say they are downloading bittorrents or just torrents? nope. they call them 'torrents' --- bitcoins would well served to bank on that and mainstream a takeover of the word 'coin'

http://coin.is/1Gy8cVUKykZqQ5MmCyKMCi7ExwY8NvgeLA

can i have coins please?
17  Bitcoin / Project Development / http://coin.is/1Drcdv4HjWKjqEMiDXuxWAm2fR8TNKje5v on: June 09, 2011, 04:53:31 PM
i'm new to bitcoin but recognize an issue with it that i'm trying to solve in other projects - the lack of a simple, meaningful URL identifier that is understandable by both humans and machines.

http://coin.is/1Drcdv4HjWKjqEMiDXuxWAm2fR8TNKje5v
http://coin.is/129446

iceland's top level domain of '.is' provides a great tool for weaving a more understandable web because of its declarative semantic properties. additionally iceland wishes to become a safehaven for freedom of expression for projects like wikileaks --- read more at http://immi.is  ---- the country also went down the tubes when their currency crashed with the financial crisis --- it seems fitting to use it for the birth of a new global monetary system.
