I would assume that the Newbie purgatory serves as a deterrent to spammers or trolls. I'm not a huge fan of it (I'm also passing my time here before I can post where I came to post) but I imagine it's far preferable to the mods/admins than having to deal with the problems that spammers and trolls bring with them.

I'm unfamiliar with solo mining so I'll just say what I know about pooled mining: You have to create a "Worker" name and password on the pool's website before you're able to mine. The name and password for the worker are what you should enter in GUIMiner.
