1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: December 31, 2017, 12:17:10 AM
Is this true, can anyone comment on that?

There is Hard-fork Going to Happen on ETH (Ethereum) called EtherZero on 19th Jan , 2018
Buy ETH before it will moon.
Each ETH holder will get same amount of ETZ
Sell when you feel good .
If All-Big Exchanges Support this Fork.

Apparently this is so, I've seen several posts on Steemit about this. Good or bad is not yet known. Need more information who has the news share the link!

There was a payed press release about it and a thread on Reddit. You can also see the official website here.

It appears to be a gigantic scam from where I'm sitting. No white paper, "reply protection", and globally unreadable content. I'm not a native speaking English myself but at this level of amateurism, it begins to look like BS.

Nothing to worry about...

hoping 2018 will be year for Ethereum and we reach at 1st position

I'm sorry, but in 2018, I was more optimistic about the throne of Ripple. Ripple does not rely on block chains, but rather uses the nodes network formed by banks and financial institutions. Transactions are fast, safe and cheap, which is regarded as an excellent way to send money. Wink

XRP is a long-term investment that will bring the maximum profit in a few years.

Ripple is an interesting asset to follow, yes. But I'm not sure it can be seen like all the others cryptoassets out there as it's not really decentralized.

So yes, you can make fast and cheap transactions but that's thanks to the few number of validators (55 if you trust the last Ripple update on that matter) i.e. centralization of the ledger-keeping. Saying that Ripple is cool is like saying: "look, VISA is dealing with a huge load of transactions". Thus being said, the Ripple company seems to be commited to push decentralization forward but is moving really slow on that subject. And until there is around a few thousands active validators on the Ripple network, it cannot be seen as a decentralized ledger IMO.

For comparison, Ethereum is dealing with the same number of transactions daily than Ripple (roughly 800k-900k in the last few days) but with more than 27k nodes that have to reach consensus. That's the real challenge here!

So for now, and also because ETH intend to offer much more than only settlement, I'll say go ETH!

Whats the good entry point price for ETH these days?

I don't hold any ETH, but want to stack some, don't know if wait for dip or just buy...

Well the $600 price a couple of days ago was a good entry point but for now just buy ASAP and hodl ! There's no point waiting for a dip that may never happen if you're running for the long-term.
4  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: December 15, 2017, 03:16:44 PM
The network is much faster now. My today's transactions went OK

I agree, network is much faster. I dont know what the recommended Gwei is now but during the kittie problem I had to use 40 Gwei.

The network congestion is getting better, we can make transactions go through with way less Gwei than some days ago.

To find out how the current situation is and how much Gwei you should set check: https://ethgasstation.info/ You can set your Gwei a bit above the safelow, this will be enough to make them go through.

I hope that the scaling issues of Ethereum will soon be something we look back to and laugh about. Ethereum has still a long way to do, but its a long way on the road of success!
yes network is getting better and transaction anr going cheap again but some times its not that cheap
ethgasstation show some times transaction lowest cost gwei is more then 20
but right now its 10 gwei lost cost for eth transaction
eth coin price is around 700$ in this month great achievement
i hope next month its will be higher then current price
it surely will go higher, but the price cant cover the problems of ethereum, VB must make some effort to solve this problem, otherwise people will turn to eos

I think ethereum teams can solve this problem as soon as possible, so that this project keep greater. Although it will need more time but i am sure will not be long, so we.must be patient

The scaling problem is a matter that all cryptos have to solve. However, I think ETH is doing pretty good by now. There's only 15k transactions in the mempool when a bit less than a million transactions were made yesterday. That a 1.5% (or 20 minutes) backlog. The safe low gas price is now about 5 Gwei according to EthGasStation. For a regular transaction needing 21000 gas, that's a $0.075 fee (with $700/ETH).

Now let's compare with Bitcoin's 110k pending transactions related to the 490k transactions yesterday. That's almost a 25% backlog (or 6 hours). The safe fees are around 400 satoshis/byte according to BitcoinFees. For a regular transaction needing 250 bytes, that's a $17 fee (with $17,000/BTC).

So ETH network is processing twice the number of transactions that BTC network is processing daily with one-twentieth of the backlog and one two-hundreths of the fees. Plenty of work to do but I'm sure we are allowed to brag a little Wink

Hi,

I have a few questions that I hope you will answer.

1. What is the difference between Ethereum-Wallet-installer-0-9-3.exe and Mist-installer-0-9-3.exe wallets?
2. Who do you recommend installing?
3. How can I make sure that the 260GB database /blockchain/ is not uploaded to the main disk C, but to another disk?
4. Can not the database /blockchain/ be uploaded to any disk at all, but use remote nodes like Monero?

Thanks!

Hi DStefanov!

Your interesting question got lost into all the ATH celebrations  Wink

1. EthereumWallet is just a Wallet when Mist is a dApp explorer including a wallet among with the possibility to browse most of the dApp out there.

2. It depends on what you're planning to do. If you just need a wallet, EthereumWallet is good enough but I can only advise you to try browsing some dApps (verifying that they are legit first) to get an idea of the power the ETH network has (and will have). Mist can be quite buggy sometimes so you can also use Metamask which is a Chrome plugin allowing you to browse some dApps right with Chrome. Or you can use Brave which is an open-source web browser with native integration of Metamask.

3. During the installation, you will have to chose where to store the chaindata folder. Consider using an SSD rather than an HDD and please note that the chaindata folder will rather be around 35 GB with a fresh sync. Remember to erase the chaindata folder (SAVE THE KEYSTORE FOLDER BEFORE DOING THAT!!) from time to time in order to resync in --fast mode (and save some space).

4. You can use an online wallet provider, but then you will have to rely on a third party node (like with the remote nodes in Monero). You can try Parity or MyEtherWallet for example (but beware of the phishing sites when Googling it).

I can't believe eth just jump to $530 within few hours since last i check it, i thought the network is over clogged as a result cryptokittens-ish, i shoulda bought yesterdaywhen it was $475+ Angry, very funny.

Remember that an overclogged network doesn't mean that the price is supposed to be stuck. As long as the ETH are staying in Bittrex/Bitstamp/GDAX/YourExchangeHere, there is no transaction on the network whatsoever. Which means that you can have 3 billions $ of transactions like today with no sensitive impact on the daily number of transactions. It's the same with Bitcoin always rising for 6 monthes now even with an unusable network.

+ETH network isn't overclogged anymore as the gas limit was raised by the miners yesterday (allowing us to reach a new transactions number ATH btw).

Although there are many friends around saying that ETH can be replaced by many tokens, it is still very high and has now stabbed $ 500

Hi ayamark789!

See the opinion of Vitalik Buterin (somehow biased maybe but still valuable) on the subject during a workshop in Taiwan. All the chains trying to offer smart contracts are copycats of Ethereum right now and don't have close to what is the developper and industrial ecosystem working around Ethereum. So no, by now there is no token which can replace ETH.

The future prospect of the Vitalik Buterin's ether Fang is still bright, although it is now facing the challenges of later show EOS, AE and so on. 1$did not get on the car, this year 500$, regret, life is so melancholy, though I still wish the ETH to go all the way.

And definitely not EOS (first joke in the video above  Wink). Even forgetting that they have no valuable product yet, remember that EOS is an ERC20 token powered by Ethereum blockchain.

I see a lot of news that ETH is about to fork next month and that holders can get candy, is that true? This is the reason for the recent increase in eth Why?

Hi blackbird123!

Ethereum has still two planned hard fork on the roadmap: Constantinople (Metropolis phase 2) and Serenity. The first one is arguably going to happen mid-2018 when the latter release date is uncertain yet.

If by "candy" you mean having tokens in both the original chain and the forked one (like it happened with the three or four forks of the Bitcoin blockchain this year) the answer is no. This happens only when the hard fork is controversial (which was the case for the fork after the DAO back in 2016 which created ETH and ETC). When an hard fork is fully accepted by the community (it was the case with Byzantium in october and will be the case for Constantinople hopefully), no one mine on the unforked chain which therefore become totally unusable.

I think the recent increase in ETH price is more like a correction given that many new people entered recently the cryptoworld by buying Bitcoin (which is the chain with the more media coverage and marketcap - yet) but then founded that there is much more in the cryptoworld than Bitcoin (which can be pretty unusable these days). Another interesting way of seeing this is comparing the number of transactions on BTC and ETH chain with their respective price evolution. See a post about it here. You see that the price of ETH tokens is simply following the adoption when the current price of BTC can be qualified, IMO, of bubblish.

IS ethereum’s POS Casper tesnet Launched success?

Yesterday it was still on private testnet. Expected on public testnet soon. Read more here.

Ethereum creator Vitalik Buterin has laid out the future plans for the technology at a blockchain conference in Taiwan. The Casper update will address consensus safety issues and a later Viper update will work on smart contract safety.

Yes he did! Here is the link toward the video of the event on Youtube. Vitalik's speech at 3h10'.

"A resolution has yet to be found for yesterday's Parity hack which saw up to $150 million frozen across the ethereum platform.
However, speaking to CoinDesk, Martin Holst Swende, head of security for the Ethereum Foundation, confirmed that a hard fork of the ethereum blockchain will be required to free up the funds."

Seen at: https://www.coindesk.com/ethereum-security-lead-hard-fork-required-to-release-frozen-parity-funds/

But will there be a hard fork?

We will see... But we are talking of roughly 500,000 ETH which sure makes a lot of money but isn't in any way comparable to the 11,500,000 ETH that the DAO used to hold back in the day (among which 3,600,000 ETH were stolen by the hacker). That's partly why you'll see that the hard fork isn't the solution which has the more upvotes on the Reddit thread.

IMHO, it's Parity's problem to handle and a good lesson for the next future. But there is also an interesting idea to implement an old EIP (suggested after the DAO mess) making contracts somehow fault-tolerant: read more about it here.
12  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: November 07, 2017, 10:24:03 PM
Ethereum is rising !!! to the moon
No it's not? It's been declining due to the Parity screw up.

It's declining indeed but I'm not sure it's due to Parity. It looks more like a global movement looking at Coinmarketcap.

Anyway I hope investors and believers out there know the difference between a contract (meaning devs e.g Parity) screwing up and the Ethereum network screwing up (which is not the case here nor it was the case with the DAO back in da days).
13  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] Ethereum: Welcome to the Beginning on: November 04, 2017, 11:17:32 PM
It doesnt seem to matter what positive news there is for Ether, price barely moves. I see this as good thing for one people cannot call it a speculative bubble like others

Cheers to that !

First we have to develop a proper ecosystem and then the price will eventually go up with adoption. Those with dev skills shall contribute with some dApps. All the others can spread the word: the press is mainly talking about Bitcoin because it's going up, let's help to make them talk about Ethereum!

Hey guys, I am pretty new to mining, having one rig with 4 x nvidia 1070, which miner would you recommend and what MSI Afterburner setup.
Thank you in advance!

You should look for this info in mining section.

Or you should go on the Ethermining subreddit Smiley

I have read that ether is fuel and btc is money, but i don't understand philosophy behind this.
What a coin offers that ether does not?
Maybe the answer is that ethereum network benefits more from a cheaper ethr than an expensive one.
Does one of the targets of any forks is to lower fuel price to attract more customers?
If the above are true, I should sell my investment as soon as possible.
In the case of Neo, they offer different concepts for share of network and fuel for it. But here ether is both. Which is better?

In past months I have seen a rush into simulating coin behaviors by smart contracts. The result is different coin tokens on Ethereum. Some are:
ebtc, ecash, ieth, postoken, basic income, ....
Creators claim that these are more secure + cheaper + faster than classic block-chain base ones.
Don't you think that these creatures are going to dominate classic ones because of better properties?

The question is more what other coins does that ETH doesn't....  Cool

Seriously, ETH can be use as a simple mean of payment or store of value just like BTC does. But ETH (the network) goes way beyond being a simple cryptocurrency: it aims to be an universal, decentralized computer where you can do whatever you want (if it can be coded of course...).

One of the main use of this computer (for now on at least) is to create smart contracts fueled by their own cryptotokens: the (in)famous ERC20 tokens. It's something in between sidechains and colored coins with BTC but with a more convenient and powerful way to develop things on it. This conveniency and standardization is the reason why many projects are blooming on ETH network and much faster than on BTC blockchain (even if this last one is much older).

But no, ERC20 token won't overcome ETH because you'll still have to pay for using ETH computer by using some gas that you can buy only using ETH (the cryptocurrency). So even if one heck of a dApp comes out and its cryptotoken costs a billion, it will still needs ETH to run. It can be like Apple and Samsung in a way: an iPhone X costs 2 times the price of a Galaxy S8 but Apple needs Samsung hardware to run.

NEO is interesting because it's Chinese which is a good (maybe the only - hello China's ban on ICOs!) way to talk to a quarter of humans being. But IMHO it's its only real quality: you can do everything NEO does with ETH, and so much more.

LOL
A lot of ETHf bagholders sweating.
If $300 is broken next stop is $200.

Classic becoin lurking...

And how is the $10 resistance going on with your dear ETC becoin?

Is there some benefit like airdrop during the fork for the ETH wallet holders or just waiting the prize to grow up?

Nope, no airdrop. Just sit down, run an updated node if you have one and hodl.

What is the chance of the Byzantium update to create another Ethereum coin (as BTC->BCH)? Less than 1%?

Less than 0.000001% IMHO. There's no debate inside the community on whether or not Byzantium is a good idea: it's an improvement. Period.

Byzantium HF officially confirmed to be on block 4370000 as expected. See the post on the official blog here.
