Currently, the price of most alt coins is affected by that of BTC. But the situation will improve with time.

Do not go for new coins unless you have complete faith in the project. It is very hard to find such projects.

I agree, I have seen that activity is reduced on this forum. May be because of less demand of BTC due to price crash.
