1  Economy / Goods / Hit by a shitstorm, selling everything I can! on: June 10, 2014, 01:51:45 PM
I have been hit with a "world of shitstorm" type situation and need to make some dough, so I'm selling off as much as I can.
I am not a beggar, the items I'm selling are all in decent condition.
I will list the items here first, and if you're interested in my sob story you can scroll down and check it out.

PM me if you are interested in any of my items, I will accept escrow.
I will update the op as items are sold.
If you want an estimate on shipping any item/s, just ask and I will respond as quickly as I can.  I'm still cleaning up this mess, so I'm not spending very much time online right now, but I will be checking here once or twice a day.

1x Unlocked 16GB Nexus 4 in pristine condition, with charging cable.  -   $150.00

Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium PCIx sound card $40.00

2x Epson PowerLite X12 LED Projector (HDMI/VGA)  -  $200.00
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=487471.msg5371252#msg5371252

Zotac GTX560 TI 1GB  -  $40.00
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=430802.msg4716304#msg4716304

I will have some other computer parts up later as well, so keep checking back if you need any for older hardware. (Think Ultra SCSI cards and drives, old video cards, memory and DVD drives, Macbook and MB Pro parts)
I also have some old, old vinyl albums, antique typewriters (heavy), antique pub signs with authentic pub grime, and some comics to sell, but probably not here due to time and lack of interest.

My Story
I was in a car accident a few weeks back where a girl basically shaved the front bumper off of my car, and I didn't have the money or insurance to fix it, so I parked the car in the drive and hoofed it everywhere.
Bad luck.

I come home for lunch one day, and while I'm sitting in my basement on the computer, I notice my feet are starting to get wet... the damn storm drain was backing up into my house.  So we were flooded out.  Tons of computer equipment, flooded.  Bitcoin mining operations suspended.  Sad
More bad luck.

I'm a tech support guy and had both a student working for me and some flexibility in scheduling, so I called work to take some time off, and fought the floodwaters for the next 22 hours straight. I take a nap, and 1 hour-in I get a call from my manager at work.
They have an emergency technical meeting that I absolutely must make an appearance at.
So, I shower, notice I have no clean clothes (washer and dryer were in the basement) and run out and buy a new shirt so I don't look like a bum for this meeting.
When I get there, my manager tells me that they are "declining to renew my contract."  I'm out of a job.
Even worse luck.

So I get home and tell my pregnant wife that I just lost my job, and then get right back to fighting the floodwaters.  My wife can't help because of bacterial infections etc. because of the pregnancy,  so it's all up to me.
I moved the car to the street, rented a truck and a storage unit to save as much out of my basement as possible.
When I get back from my last load, I notice someone backed into my car and crunched the corner and tail-light right into the trunk space.  They must have hit it pretty hard, but at least they left a note.
WTH is going on here.

The next day we have a doctors appointment to listen to the baby's heartbeat and check my wife's health.  It had been scheduled way in advance as they like to keep their eyes on the progress, and we were just into the second trimester.
He couldn't find the heartbeat... we'd had a sonogram just a couple weeks before and 'lil dude was flipping around and sorta waved at us, but we couldn't find anything, so the doctor had us rush to the hospital for an emergency sonogram.
The baby had died.
WTF life.

So my wife just gave our last $1000 to the government for our property taxes, I have two kids and I have to feed them and myself.  Too bad we still have internet though, because it means she just stays in her room and wallows in self pity all day.  She comes out to go to the bathroom and go to church, that's it. We have two kids, and I've been working balls-out to make sure they get to school, have homework done, are clothed, etc.  AND I'm still cleaning flood shit up, doing dishes, mowing the lawn, laundry, etc.

The guy that backed into my car payed to have it repaired without involving insurance, and because of that he even payed to have a new front bumper put on.  So at least one lucky thing has occurred in all of this.

I feel pretty messed-up, and aimless.  Just trying to take care of what I can right now, so if anyone can help make things a little easier by buying my stuff, I would really, really appreciate it.

3  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Canada ONLY: Taxes and law on: April 10, 2014, 05:54:18 PM
Basically the Canadian Govt. has wiped their hands of Bitcoin, saying it isn't currency.
All they want is their piece if it is used to cash out or make a purchase.
So if you buy something online, they expect the appropriate taxes to be levied by the online retailer, or upon entry to the country at customs.

Quote
"When bitcoins are bought or sold like a commodity, any resulting gains or losses could be income or capital for the taxpayer depending on the specific facts," ruled the CRA.

That section is covered in paragraphs nine through 32 of the CRA's section IT-479R, Transactions in Securities, "which provide general comments for purposes of determining whether transactions are income or capital in nature."

So if you bought $100 worth of BTC and it's currently worth $200, you don't pay anything.

However if you cashed it out at $200, THEN you would have to pay income tax on the $100 you made.

If you had taken that extra $100, and reinvested it in bitcoin, buying $200 worth of bitcoin from that initial "win" off the $100 buy-in plus the initial $100, then the value goes up to $300, then you have to pay taxes on the $100 gain.  So in the end, you pay taxes on $200 because that is how much you "made."

So, CRA only cares if you cash out, and they consider the income to be capital if you're trading and income if you're mining.
End of story... for now.
Harper and other Governments are afraid of Bitcoin.  Must be bankers whispering in their ears.

7  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [Gauging Interest] Bitcoin at Burning Man! on: February 03, 2014, 07:44:44 PM
To say there is nobody at burning man who cares about bitcoins is just a stupid statement.
Burning Man has people from all walks of life, getting together to enjoy music, freedom and getting messed up.
The focus of the festival will not allow this idea, even if the participants would be interested.
It's like advertising life insurance at a christmas party, just too unrelated and awkward.
By all means, wear your own Bitcoin T-Shirt.

Another good idea is to make subtly cool bitcoin t-shirts.  Like a shirt with a crazy design made out of bitcoins that some half-naked chick will want to stare at for 20 minutes in the hot desert sun.

10  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Marketplace (Altcoins) / Re: Sapphire R9 280X Vapor-X OC mining settings on: January 28, 2014, 08:54:36 PM
With the R9's do NOT use cgminer/bfgminer to adjust the voltage, fan speed, core or memory clocks.
Use a manual overclocking tool like Sapphire TRIXX(will let you set individual cards separately too), and set the fan at a high enough speed that it won't overheat at load.
CGMiner, when it's adjusting settings on the fly will go lower than it should, as it doesn't realize that the r9s can operate in the higher temp ranges.  I keep my 290 at 80 degrees with the fan set at a static 4400rpm.

Now use the scrypt mining tweak guide in your cgminer directory to tune it, and you should be good.

Also note, depending on what pool and what coin you are mining, it can sometimes make a 100kh difference, so choose a pool with good connection speeds.

That is all.

12  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Too Many Scammers on: January 24, 2014, 10:26:19 PM
This isn't a problem with bitcoin so much as it is a social problem.

Think of BTC like cash, I know not many of you young folks remember cash, but once you give it to someone, it's gone unless you track them down and beat it out of them.  BTC is no different.  Use the SAME techniques for securing BTC transactions as you would for cash - make certain you aren't being robbed.  How many people would you mail cash to without vetting them?

If you could reverse BTC transactions it would just increase scamming.
13  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Diamond 6970 2G - Used, Good condition, $80 on: January 24, 2014, 09:59:29 PM
Willing to ship first or use trusted escrow?

I'm interested depending!

Reputable escrow service of your choice would be preferable, but if a trusted member has a good history here I am willing to ship with tracking.

15  Economy / Computer hardware / Diamond 6970 2G - Used, Good condition, $80 on: January 24, 2014, 08:57:10 PM
Hello folks, I have a used Diamond Radeon 6970 for sale, about two years old.
I filled up my box with R9 290x cards, and am trying to get rid of my old equipment.
$80 worth of BTC or LTC is fine by me.
This card was used with a water block, and I highly recommend using one as the stock cooler is shite.
I have reattached the cooler with some Arctic MX3 thermal paste.
Shipping to North America is FREE.
PM me for any other locales.
Sorry for the upside-down pic... damned iPhone.

16  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: No ROI on future Mining, its a FACT! on: January 20, 2014, 04:54:59 PM
Obviously for it to make any sense to mine, which must continue in order for there to be new coins, the price of bitcoin must rise.

I don't think the price is overinflated at all, and I think miners that have been in this game since day 1, that have a good portion of the coins should hold out for an even higher price to sell at. Sellers can pretty much determine the value just by holding at that value.

Hobby miners only have a coin here and there to sell, so are pretty ineffectual at affecting the market.  That leaves miners and speculators who both want to see higher prices, to watch their fortunes rise.  Although I guess traders do love those crazy huge dips and swings.

It would be a good idea to start a bitcoin marketing group, where we could do things like democratically vote to sell at certain prices, to allow all involved to recoup mining costs and make a little profit.  I think this would go far towards furthering the stability/legitimacy of bitcoin and the careers of miners.

18  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Alt-Coins on: January 15, 2014, 02:53:11 PM
Been bitcoining for quite some time, sold off my BFL Jally for $650 and bought two R9 290x with the cash and a little BTC.
I have 50GH lined up for hosted mining BTC soon, but in the meantime I want to get my coin on.
I'm looking into mining alts and LTC (I consider litecoins to be a mainstream coin due to its acceptance) and find myself in awe at how much crap there is to sift through to figure out how to profit from this venture.
