1  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [COINO] The Coin(O) Community Discussion thread on: July 08, 2014, 05:42:53 PM
Indeed, smcardle was the biggest force behind the new Coino team, and without him we can't do much.

I personally haven't heard from him since he was back for a day after his accident.

As much as I hate to say it, I would call Coino dead.
2  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [COINO] The Coin(O) Community Discussion thread on: June 10, 2014, 08:37:14 PM
Hey guys,

What RichardT is saying is generally the same opinion as the Coin(O) team:
- We do not try to make exact schedules, as we do this in our freetime, and cannot guarantee anything
- It's impossible to post daily news. Or at least they would be super boring, such as "still working on the same thing as yesterday"

We do not want to give any false hope and/or expectations, and this is definitely a long term project.

So is Coin(O) about to die? No, it's about to get alive - but we depend on you, the miners, to keep us going strong!

By the way, I am interesting in hearing a little about you guys:
- Do you use dedicated rigs?
- Which OS does your rig run?
- Which GPU do you use?
- Which miner do you use?

Cool, thanks!

To all the pool owners:

Thanks for showing us your support, it's cool to see so many pools advertising!

Hamsterer:

A small request - can you change CON into COINO? We are trying to change the shortname on pools/exhanges Smiley
5  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [COINO] The Coin(O) Community Discussion thread on: June 02, 2014, 03:44:20 PM
It seems like smcardle is quite busy, not heard from him in many days Smiley.

smcardle is indeed busy - everyone in the team has fulltime jobs, and no, it's (sad as it is), not a fulltime Coino job Wink
So while we are trying to keep the forum active, we cannot guarantee daily news, so don't be scared off due to a little inactivity Smiley

You make a valid point there with the major groups of miners nowadays.  Looks like our best bet might be to attract more gamers to start mining and trading.  Coino is off to a good start with the web wallet and gaming platform.  I imagine if I was a gamer and had an incentive to mine, I would definitely put my GPU(s) to use when I'm not gaming.  Either that or go buy coins. Therefore, the biggest hurdle is giving those people an incentive.  So I see now that changing to an ASIC resistant algorithm might be essential at the moment.

That is exactly what I am thinking - give gamers a reason to mine with their gaming rig, when they are not playing. That will give us a lot of more players (pun intended Cheesy ) and we can hopefully get some more trading going on.
My vision if that the gamers will either be able to directly use their coins, or by using a market to exchange their coins - not limited to only exchanging between crypto coins.  I'm thinking like, exchange Coino into let's say pre-purchase Steam cards, so they can "mine new games", wouldn't that be cool? I know this is already possible for some other coins, and most definitely something we will want too.

I know changing to a new algo and implementing new things take time, but we should start a survey to at least gauge what the rest of the community are thinking.

At an early point of the takeover we voted for a change of algorithm, and most voted no.

I would like to hear smcardle and bgades views on making a vote, after we have reviewed some cons and pros. People shouldn't be voting for something they don't know what means, so we have to keep people informed about such.
6  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [COINO] The Coin(O) Community Discussion thread on: May 29, 2014, 09:04:02 PM
Just a thought:  Has anyone considered the possibility of switching to the good old SHA-256 instead of one of the newer algos?  I mean, if you think about it, bitcoin asics are cheap and widely available now so many miners already own them or can easily get their hands on them (unlike scrypt asics).  GPUs are actually pretty expensive and use much more energy.  Wouldn't asics increase the security of the network and also raise the mining difficulty making the coin more rare and thus more valuable?

I mean look what asics did to bitcoin.  Didn't it actually make it a stronger coin?  Perhaps bitcoin is an exception since it is the father of all coins.  But the fact remains is that it seems to be a natural evolution to have more efficient ways to mine and at higher speeds i.e. asic miners.  We can't depend on inefficient GPUs forever can we?

Also, since no algo is truly asic resistant, will it be forever a game of cat and mouse as newer asics come out?  There's gotta be a stopping point somewhere.

There are probably a lot of points that I'm missing but just wanted to throw that thought out there as the community decides on the possibility of switching algo.  Not trying to suggest anything.  Just wanted to contemplate and stir up some discussion Smiley

Changing the algorithm to SHA256 for which you can already get cheap ASIC is fairly good.

However, I believe that scrypt has a much broader audience compared to SHA256 as it makes sense to use your GPU (or even CPU), which everyone has.
That is not the case for SHA256, where you are forced to buy some ASIC equipment to even get started.

I don't believe that all people who are new to mining will want to invest in dedicated mining equipment, for several reasons.
- Some people simply can't afford to buy mining equipment due to their budget
- In case they loose interest in mining, their equipment is worthless to them, and the only option is to sell it (likely for a loss)

I believe that the kind of people who will be the first to start mining, are those who are at least slightly techy.
Mining is definitely not for everyone just yet.
Therefore I'm guessing that cryptos main audience are gamers and geeks, and they are already equipped with mining equipment, which makes it higher likely they will gain interest in mining and actually start doing it, as all they have to do is download some software and create an account at a pool, if not using a p2pool which pays out directly into their (online? Wink ) wallet.

As earlier stated, mining is not for everyone, and I think that there are 3 primary groups of miners:
- Geeks
- Gamers
- Financial people/investors

I think that 2 groups are dominating of the 3 mining groups:
- Geeks
- Financial people/investors

The largest group of ASIC owners will most definitely be the financial people/investors.

So far gamers doesn't have the big reason to be mining, but as Coino will be integrated into several groups of platforms - including gaming platforms, I believe that gamers will be more interested in mining Coino later on.

I agree that changing to anything else than scrypt and SHA256 (all of the current algoritms that is supported by ASIC) is simply buying time, but I think that will give a more fair start, rather than having investors mining all of the coins. Also, when the gamers learn of ASIC's, that will definitely scare them off and might go for other coins for which you cannot get ASICs.

One of Coino's goals is to attract new miners - not just getting current miners to switch to another coin.

The final end of changing to new algorithms to fight ASICs will be when ASIC is so mainstream that an algorithm switch vote would fail.
We do not have plans about staying completely ASIC free, as ASIC is definitely the future, as they are much more (power) efficient.

It could even stop before that, if we switch algorithm now, it could also happen to be the only time.

I am interested in this coin.

If you need any help on the marketing side then I can render assistance.

I am currently the active Developer of Extremecoin, BBQcoin and Bitcoin Scrypt, just to give you a bit of a bio.

Thanks.

Thanks for your offer to help but right now marketing will be of no use. Community Devs are working really hard to make this coin a success. There will be upgraded version of current webwallet with more games and a dedicated exchange for Coin(O). Once we have something new to offer, we will go ahead with marketing. With 50 secs confirmation speed, I think this coin will be a huge success but it will take some time. We together can make this a new big thing, not just a pump and dump like most coins.

Regards

Vipin

I think it's a cool offer, I appreciate that.

Right know I don't believe that we are in need of marketing though, as we could mostly promote "to come" features, rather than actually having our services up and running - which I believe is the point where we should really start to promote the coin.
7  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [COINO] The Coin(O) Community Discussion thread on: May 26, 2014, 07:12:14 PM
True SoreGums, I was also aware of there being a possibility of a more efficient miner, which also could be kept private, at least for a while.

The team who made x11 is the Darkcoin team, which has been getting some popularity lately.

To me it sounds like it shouldn't be the big issue, as x11 is not made in a way that actually should be able to utilize a GPU more than ~50 %.

I found this where a few people discuess the issue about optimized miners:
https://darkcointalk.org/threads/why-does-x11-run-cooler.178/

I have no idea whether it's possible to make hardware which would be able to be fully utilized, but a lot seems possible these days...

There is an article about x11 here, which seems to have kind of the same beliefs as me:
http://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/news/pros-cons-x11-algorithm/2014/04/10

Also, interesting read from an interview with the Darkcoin x11 developer here:
http://coinchomp.com/2014/05/09/interview-tale-of-two-halves-the-most-secure-algorithm-1/

Remember part 2:
http://coinchomp.com/2014/05/09/interview-tale-of-two-halves-the-most-secure-algorithm-2/

So, this seems like a slight concern to me. Every kind of algorithm will likely be hit by ASICs someday, if there is enough money involved.
Should it ever be an issue for us with x11, we could fork the coin by a new vote, of which it would require a majority of ASIC owners to vote no.

It's worth taking into consideration that a fork of a large coin could cause a split in community with 2 forks being used, such as with Litecoin, which was forked by some due to scrypt ASICs.

The reason I prefer x11 is because of the algorithms I know of, this seems very appealing right now, and I think the worry about ASIC for this is rather long term, so we would a least be able to avoid ASICs for a while. Especially taking into account we are already vulnerable to ASICs at this very moment.
8  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [COINO] The Coin(O) Community Discussion thread on: May 25, 2014, 07:01:46 PM
Here is my view on algorithm and ASIC:

I think SoreGums has a valid point about ASIC hardware will get cheaper.
As of now ASIC hardware has a very limited market for miners, and therefore I am worried about that a few people will be mining most of the coins and make a very high difficulty, which is unfair for the other miners.
If at some point ASIC has gone really mainstream and is super cheap and easy to use for not so techy people, then it would make sense to use an ASIC friendly algorithm, as it would be fair for everyone.

Due to my concerns I think the best option is to change to an algorithm which is currently ASIC resistant.

My own intentions are to vote for features which will make the coin available and mining friendly for everyone, in a fair way.
The lesser the bother, the more people will want to actually bother at all.
When I talk to people about crypto, they ask "well, why should I bother about crypto/mining", because they need a reason to actually mine/wanting the coins, and even if there is a good reason, not everyone will want to do a lot of research about how to start mining.

Therefore I think Coino should be a friendly coin to get a broad audience. As you will need a GPU, gamers will be the first adopters, and what they invest into mining will also be useable for gaming, so even if they loose interest their gear is still useable or should be fairly easy to sell to either other miners or gamers.

I personally like x11, as it greatly helps with some of the issues that scares people off:
- It's much more energy efficient, which means a lower electricity bill
- Due to being more energy efficient, the hardware will get far less hot, which means lesser fan noise
- ASIC resistant, which means those who has a newer GPU can mine fairly

Regarding block halving, I would like to hear people opinion on why exactly they want it, before I can take a proper stand.
9  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [COINO] The Coin(O) Community Discussion thread on: May 25, 2014, 05:30:49 AM
To clarify a few things:

First of all I assume that some of you found the old (and discontinued!) forum located at coinoforum.com, which was/is owned by the old and original team of Coino developers, who are now fully gone.
We have no access to that forum, and are in no way associated, so please don't use that forum.

The above leads to the next point:
Please keep the discussion in a proper tone, a proper community doesn't call each other names, and swearing doesn't really show much support either.

Instead, you guys should keep your attention directed at the proper topics, as mentioned by smcardle:
- Updated online wallet coming along, with support for multiple alt-coins
- New games being added to the online wallet
- Coino exchange coming up
- New design for coinocoin.com - we agree that the current doesn't really look that cool
- Some more unannounced - you will get some more details when it's ready for a beta release. I will reveal it's software which can be used by most miners, but still not ready for (all) end users...

So in the end... who cares that you can't sell your coins at several exchanges - why would you even want to do that? Wink

You are very welcome!

If we can get a higher volume they are still interested in listing us again - although it's not perfectly clear whether they will re-list Coino directly, or if we will have to go through the coin voting system again.
11  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] [COINO] The Coin(O) Community Discussion thread on: May 22, 2014, 09:05:01 PM
I just talked to OldManKidd from poloniex, who confirmed they are de-listing Coino due to the currently low volume.
We will be de-listed at the 24th., so your withdrawed coins should still arrive.
I recommend everyone who has coins there to withdraw them, so they won't become lost.

This is quite a frustation, as that means Coino will also be de-listed from coinwarz, as poloniex is the only exchange source.

Coino can still be exchanged here: https://www.swisscex.com/market/CON_BTC

We are working on some cool projects, but as of now I will have to let smcardle talk about that.

I haven't traded on poloniex myself, but I've only heard good of them, so I will also suppose they (or rather the coindaemon?) are slow Smiley

15  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: ⚒[CGA] Cryptographic Anomaly - The Elusive Coin⚒ on: March 23, 2014, 07:53:35 AM

There is a serious fork on the network please stop mining on cga.p2p.0x0a.nl, omargpools.ca, and anomalypool.com until we can fix this massive fork. Expect coins to be lost from the last 24 hours of mining on these pools.

Please re-frame from sending coins to other wallets of exchanges. This will just add to your risk of lost coins!

I've been mining on the p2pool at anomalypool.com for the last month and a half straight, I'm on the correct chain (I checked the hash, and I'm currently on block 69763), and I can confirm that the pool went on a different fork no earlier than 9:57 PM EST, as that is the time of my last received payment. Usually, I receive payments within 5-10 minutes of each other, and that was 1.5 hours ago, so something is definitely not right.

https://cga.thedigitalmint.net is on the wrong chain, since https://cga.thedigitalmint.net has a lower height than anomalypool.

Current block: 70599

node1.cga.anomalypool.com node2.cga.anomalypool.com and both pools http://anomalypool.com/static/ and http://mpos.cga.anomalypool.com/ are on this chain.

I can confirm this, was unfortunately mining myself at https://cga.thedigitalmint.net and just attempted to withdraw 1.5 CGA, which never showed up. I checked the blocks and they mismatched, and now I see here that it truly is forked.

Be careful http://pool1.suncoin.biz is a scam.
Many blocks found but but no coin distributed

I mined a few coins there today I just tried to withdraw, was instantly recieved in my wallet.

Show us some proof!!!

I have checked the pool and it does not give any shares and all mined and shares are pointing to "unknown".
The OP/Dev should remove this pool as its official pool or it will drag down the SUN coin too.

Here is proof that the pool1.suncoin.biz is doing a shady work/SCAM!!!

Here is a screenshot of what I have mined, you can also see I have withdrawn about 2.5 SUN:

The transfer is here:
http://postimg.org/image/6682i52qx/

And they land in my wallet:

I have no idea if this could be a scam pool, but it works for me...

I think it's unlikely that being listed on Mintpal will significantly raise the value, but it should at least increase the volume.
Coinmarket was the biggest Coino exchange, and with that being down, Coino trading is extremely low, which both affects price and difficulty.
The current low trading volume also makes Coino easily vulnerable to manipulation.

But - this month we should be seeing some new stuff from the Coino team (roadmap), and I also know that several people in the Coino community are working behind the scenes, creating additional content, which also  is planned to be released this month.

If you mix all that together, I think it's likely to see the interest, and thereby the diff for Coino going up, and that should increase the price.

But no, that won't mean you will be rich by April Tongue

Great Shahrukh! Smiley

Btw, I have been wondering, since Mintpal and Poloniex still says CON/BTC, does that mean they haven't updated the wallet?
I know it's not yet listed at Mintpal, but at least the voting system says "CON".
