the next few days may bring some more announcements from MTGOX about the situation. so waiting is an option.

but whilst you wait, look for any bitcoin meetings in your area, find some other people near you that might be in a similar situation and form a group. if the worst does happen, then you as a group can file a lawsuit and because its a group the costs initially would be divided between you. this will make it cheaper and also with more then one person. you can plan the best strategy to impliment it.

I actually found a few more peeps here in sweden through the sweclockers forum that are in the same situation as my brother. We exchanged few messages, but its to soon to form a group or a meet-up since there isnt nay official statements that MT.gox really has gone bankrupt.

Bear in mind there have been a lot of wild theories posted here as fact, so don't believe anything

This is a very important point.

There is no reliable information about what is happening with MtGox yet.

There are rumors that they are bankrupt (rumors that a lot of us believe), but no facts.

They haven't reported they are bankrupt.  They haven't reported that they are shutting down permanently. They haven't reported anything at all.

It's a good guess that they probably are insolvent and that they won't be able to re-open, but it is just a guess. Hopefully more information will become available in the next few days (or weeks).
Waiting for reliable info seems to be the smartest thing to do right know.

The reason I am writing here is that i want know if there is anything I can do to get those lost coins back ?
No. You can wait and see if MtGox comes back up or offers its users their funds back. Most feel that is unlikely to some extent.

Bear in mind there have been a lot of wild theories posted here as fact, so don't believe anything unless it's clearly marked as speculation and you agree with the basis for the speculation, or else you have found a verifiable source for it.

would getting a lawyer and filing a lawsuit against MT.gox help?
I imagine it would certainly get MtGox's attention, which may help. I haven't yet heard of a successful prosecution in a bitcoin dispute but it would be good news to see one as then we'd know that bitcoin is considered an asset in law. Your trouble may come in

  • Explaining to the lawyer what bitcoin is and how 1 of them is worth about $550 today, so 27 represents a loss of about $14.8k.
  • Getting the lawyer to agree to sue a company that is based in Japan.

Is there any other tips or tricks for getting them back ?
There was a company called bitcoinbuilder that were offering to buy up your goxbtc for a rate of less than one btc each, but I don't think they are in operation since today. People did get funds out that way.

Your brother may have to take this as a very expensive lesson in not using an exchange like a bank. Sad

Finally, donation addresses don't go down well.

I have been reading throughout many posts in the forum and everything seems to be like you said just wild theoris, so if I want legit information about the MT.gox situation what news-site should be reading on to know for sure that this is actuall info.

I suspected there would be a few problems with the lawyer solution  Undecided but if bitcoinbuilder was buying goxbtc then that means there still is hope for the lost btc, why else would a company go in and buy it?

yep begging should help.. but your wallet doesn't add up either.

Dont get me wrong i dont want any donations or someone to feel sorry for him, I want to know if there is something that can be done agaisnt it and if so what? What do you mean about my wallet?

You will have to wait until they go through the bankruptcy process.  Then you and everybody else will get a relative share of whatever money is remaining after they pay all their bills.

So this is actually happening? Do i need to join some group or something to be a part of this or are they going after the registered members on the webpage?

There will be plenty of lawsuits to go around.  End result, maybe some lawyers get paid, but those who had bitcoins with Gox are out of luck.

I'm not sure why you or your brother are so wed to the idea that bitcoins are where you should park all your money.  They can be an investment, but you should never put all of your eggs in a single basket.

Both of you should take this as a life lesson and move on.  Keep mining if it makes you happy.  Life is too short to spend a day of it miserable.

To be honest i am not, I had some savings lying around for a rainy day that i decided to play around with in bitcoins to see if there was any money to be made, i would never invest my stuff in btc, but then again i am not the greedy one in our family Cheesy

Okay here is the deal I am pretty new to mining been mining late middle of january, i have mined about 3 btc maybe so far. It was actually my younger brother who introduced me to mining.

Problem is while i am a safe miner my brother put all his coins into Mt.gox , think he had about 27 bitcoins or so. Ever since Mt.gox f*cked up he has litterally been miserable. He was so into mining he litterally sold most of his belongings to invest in btc and know have 0 of them. I am trying to help him the best that i can to cover his loss and get his life back on track, already gave him my btc and am now selling my mining gear to collect even some more. I just hate seeing him like this   Undecided

The reason I am writing here is that i want know if there is anything I can do to get those lost coins back ? I live in sweden and so does he, would getting a lawyer and filing a lawsuit against MT.gox help? Is there any other tips or tricks for getting them back ? I tried reading about MT.gox and their current situation to see if there is a way to get it back but everything is so far leading to a dead end. I really dont want someone to do the work for me i just need a push into the right direction.

PS. sorry for me terrible english  Grin
